what's going once? the idea? I like it.
"O reason, reason, abstract phantom of the waking state, I had already expelled you from my dreams, now I have reached a point where those dreams are about to become fused with apparent realities: now there is only room here for myself. "

....
That Last Christmas
He coped with one closing Christmas with us.
Graced as a salvation of medicine
Papa returned home after having been
Mended—the surgeons fingering his heart
Like wise men offering pious.
Not fully mended. He needed my hand
To shave, lift out of bed, slide on his trousers.
He tried his best. That’s what life spurs,
His rasping breath, his timorous eyes,
His weight pitched on me to stand.
Mom put out her holiday table twill,
With the poinsettia print. Beneath the tree
The kids appraised the glitzy gifts with glee.
We even drank some wine, though all his meds,
Soothed by singing Santa on the sill.
We mostly talked. His face glowed. He said
Life, pain and all, was pleasant, one complied.
When he smiled it seemed angels were beside
Him. He said he understood our savior’s birth,
Tree lights twinkling green and red.
Brother horsed around, Sis drove a thousand miles;
Mom spread across dish after dish to feast
Into the night. At twelve yearning ceased,
Gifts peeled, he got a pillow for his neck.
He gave the kids twenty dollar bills.
Atoned, that was his last hale holy day.
Then on it was all stations of the cross,
A shrinking heart; the glow curved into gloss.
The winter night rounded into a bellow,
And the star above decayed.

I'm the patron saint of the denial,
With an angel face and a taste for suicidal.
Congratulations Virgil!!!!!!!!!
Dream as though you'll live forever, live as though you'll die today (James Dean)
Very touching and beautiful. Congratulations Virgil. Well deserved.
I'm in love with The Vinegar Man and Mr. Tanner, but be careful, it could just as easily be you.

Thank you. I will start a thread for critical comments. And let me say the other poem "A Christmas Dance" was outstanding. Too bad more people didn't submit.

That's so beautiful! You always capture the right emotion. One of my favorite lines was the "glitzy gifts" statement. It fits so well!
Tomorrow always holds the promise of something new and exciting. I am the Jetsons meet the Flintstones.
Caught and conered by tradition-clad christmases
We entertain our guests among the Rich and the Influential
In the finest porcelain,
In the best of untarnished silver,
In lavender-scented linen,
We entertain them all.
In the brightly colored lanterns we light our front doors,
In the glistening tinsels we deck the christmas tree,
With greeting cards and gifts from far and near,
We collect our christmases.
In the sudden rush and hush of christmas eve,
In the comfy-cozy spirit of jubilant carols,
We celebrate our christmases
And closed our palaces.
Swallowed in by sin
We entertained Him in the manger since
And entertain Him in the manger still.
