    Happy Birthday!

    An interview with Sweets America:

1 - How did you come about this site and what makes you keep coming back?
The first time I found the site, I was searching for things about Faulkner. It was summer and I was reading "As I Lay Dying." I read some of the poetry forum too and I thought why not join? I thought it could be nice for me to participate in such a forum.

2 - Have you visited other countries than your own and what did you like about it or not like? If you could live somewhere different from where you live now, where would it be and why?
I am French and I have been in the Unites States for about 3 months. I love this country, I have always loved it. I want to stay here forever. I love it here, it is so much easier for me, I feel at home. I especially love the town I live in right now. Such a different lifestyle than in France.

3 - What are your favorite hobbies ?
Reading, playing with dogs, writing, being on the net, wandering through the countryside, doing things with someone I love. Oh, and playing pool in bars, I just discovered that in America.

4 - Do you have any pets?
I love dogs, I have two dogs. Well one of them is technically dead but anyway. They are Mabrouck and Calif. They are sweethearts.

5 - What makes you happy?
Being kissed and hugged by someone I love, having fun with a dog, a wheat field with a blue sky, a summer morning, a hot chocolate...

    6. What is mankind's biggest achievement, and its greatest downfall?
Not sure about the biggest achievement. The greatest downfall would be mankind itself. The way they are and what they do.

    7. If you had a long day of hard work ahead of you what music would you be playing on your mp3, while working?
I don't have any mp3, but I would listen to Hole, The Cranes, Damien Saez, Benjamin Biolay, Neil Young, Jeff Buckley, Muse, Placebo, Hanson (I know what you think, but I still love their first album), some of The Cranberries, some of Marilyn Manson, some Depeche Mode...

    8. If you could take one book, music album and one video with you to a desert island, what would they be?
    Book: maybe "The Dharma Bums"
Music: "Live Through This" by Hole
Movie: "Old Boy" by Park Chan Wook
But I really don't like to choose.

    9. Do you feel comfortable in your walk with God?
I am not walking with God, I am walking to the opposite direction. God is not my buddy, I'd like him to forget that I exist, thank you.

    10. Which actor should play you in a movie based on your life?
    Katie Holmes?

11.Given the option, what animal would you choose to be?
The first thing that comes to mind would be a dog, of course, but in the meantime a dog's life is quite scary. Always being a prisoner around humans who pretend they love you while they take your freedom away. So I'm not sure. Maybe I should be some kind of bird. A cute one.

    12. What were your favorite things to do in the past? What about now?
When I was a kid I love playing with little thingies, little plastic animals that I would put on my windowsill and play with until sunset. I loved to draw too. Or play with my dogs.
Two of these things, I still like doing now.

    13. What activities make you lose track of time?
Reading, or being on the net, or having fun with someone.

    14. What makes you feel great about yourself?
When I write something that I like or when a teacher loves my work, or when I see someone I like likes me too. And when I help someone and give love.

    15. Who inspires you most? (Anyone you know or not. Family, friends, authors, artists, leaders, etc.) Which qualities inspire you, in each person?
Jack Kerouac? (I had to mention him at some point). He is the one who inspires me the most. I admire his quest for freedom, the fact that he still went forward even when he didn't know what he was searching for. I admire his ideas about Buddhism, and I admire his writing too. I also admire how strong he was despite all the difficulties he encountered. I admire the fact that he had flaws, and how he tried to deal with them.

    16. What are you naturally good at? (Skills, abilities, gifts etc.)
Drawing, some painting. Analyzing people, sometimes.

    17. What do people typically ask you for help in?
Psychological things, problems, relationships. Human things.

    18. If you had to teach something, what would you teach?
Literature maybe. Or how to be a dog in a human skin.

    19. What would you regret not fully doing, being or having in your life?
I would regret not being aware of what I'm aware of. But if I were not aware of it, how could I regret it anyway? I would regret losing hope, maybe, too. I would regret stopping to be myself even if they have trouble to come to terms with who I am.

    20. What song is in your head at the moment?
For several days I've had Bob Marley's "Is This Love" in my mind.

    21. The last book you bought/borrowed from the library?
From the library I last borrowed a bunch of books about Kerouac. From amazon I last bought a book about French cuisine. That will be a Christmas present for my boyfriend.

    22. Which book are you reading at the moment?
I am going to start "Way of the Peaceful Warrior" as recommended by my bvoyfriend.

    23. The last book you finished reading?
I read a collection of short stories by different authors.

    24. Favorite food?/ Comfort food?
    Hot chocolate, pasta, pizza, pastries.

    25. What time of day do you most often find yourself on the LitNet?
Oh, about all day long, at different times.

    26. What are you wearing right now?
Jeans, a green top, a blue sweater. Pink panties. You would like them.

    27. Favorite poem?
Not sure. Jerry Newman's poetry is quite good. "Intimations" especially.

    28. First novel you remember reading on your own?
"It" by Stephen King. I love my Stevo.

    29. Favorite TV shows?
Desperate Housewives, Scrubs, Family Guy, One Tree Hill, Dawson's Creek, Masters of Horror...

    30. Which LitNet members would you like to meet in person if you could?
My heart hesitates between TheFifthElement and KizPaws. I'd love to meet The Fifth because I'd spend days arguing with her for the sake of it, and I would fall in love with her mind again. I'd love to meet Kizzoo because she's such a sweetie, it kills me.

    31. Favorite post on the Forum?
    None in particular.

    32. Favorite thread?
    Same as above.

    33. Last food did you have?
Enchiladas yesterday night, made by that boyfriend of mine. Oh but I had hot chocolate and nutella this morning, too. Made by myself.

    34. Last words you said out loud?
"Have you finished using my phone?" (I asked that to my roommate who is starting to piss me off because he is using all my damn minutes.)

    35. Last person you hugged/kissed?
Shawn, the boyfriend I was talking about.

    36. What do you do (for a living) to be able to keep your LitNet addiction going? And are you happy with your chosen profession?
I am a student. Damn, I've been in University for seven years!! Yes I'm happy with it. I'd better be.

    37. What question would you like to ask yourself?
Why are you like that, I mean, always thinking and arguing about everything for the sake of it, because it pisses people off most of the time, you know? What are you searching for?

    38. What would you like to be if you could change your profession?
Not sure. I don't even have a profession. Maybe a writer. Yes, that sounds good.

    39. Least favorite book/song/movie?
    Book: ?
    Song: ?
Movie: all the ones dealing with science fiction or super heroes. Star Wars, Batman, X-Men...

    40. The most generous thing you have done?
I helped a snail cross a road once.

    41. What is your most outstanding feature?
Not sure. Maybe my lips? Or my eyes?

    42. If you could change one thing about the way you look, what would that be?
I would not change anything, I like myself quite a bit. My answer would have been so different some years ago, but one day I realized I thought I looked pretty good.

    43. Which book do you wish you had written?
Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye." I absolutely love the style.

    44. What is your favorite book cover?
    Stephen King's "Everything's Eventual" and "From a Buick 8."

    45. Most and least favorite characters from books?
I really like Roland of Gilead from King's "The Dark Tower." Actually I love lots of King's male characters. I'm not sure about the least favorite ones.

    46. What would your biography be titled?
"The Woman Who Belonged Elsewhere." Until some days ago it would have been "The Woman Who Could Not Make Love" but thank God the title just changed.

    47. What should you be doing at the moment instead of answering these questions?
    Writing a capstone about Kerouac.

    48. Wonderful Superman or depressing Batman?
    None.

    49. The most embarrassing moment in your life?
Not sure. Maybe when I peed in my pants at school when I was a kid.

    50. Which literary character (s) have you been told to resemble the most?
I've never been told I resembled any character.

    51. List some of the things that annoy you immensely.
People who fail to see the other side.
Those who take advantage of me.
    Mean people.
Those who can't see beyond the tip of their nose.
But then I don't like being annoyed about that either, that's immature and intolerant. I'm sorry.

    52. Anything that you want to forget but you never can?
My childhood, or how it seems impossible to live differently on this planet.

    53. One final word of wisdom for LitNet users?
    Be kind, please.

    54. What would you like to ask to the person to be interviewed after you?
Are you happy with the way things are here?

Sweets, I loved your interview. And I was deeply touched at your saying you would like to meet me, thank you for this.

p.s. Yes, your helping a wee snail cross the road was totally sweet -- I loved that answer!

p.p.s. Tell your roommate to stop using all your phone minutes or I will club him!

p.p.p.s. I totally agree with your sentiments about "Catcher In The Rye", good answer there.

Nice interview Sweets. I'm probably the only lit net member who you once actually told I could not see beyond the tip of my nose. I must say you have become a real American.

    Happy Belated Birthday!!!
I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of anything than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.
