Before The Devil Knows You're Dead 10/10

At 82, Sidney Lumet is still making more modern films than most directors. He also just made one of the greatest films I've seen recently. It's not for everybody, it's so intense that by the time you leave the theatre you will be gasping for air. The film isn't long (two hours), but the atmosphere is extremely heavy.

The plot is also very tight and shows how the family, as an institution, has been overthrown in today's world by other values (money). The characters are genuine and the acting makes them even more believable. Finney and Hoffman are great as always and Ethan Hawk sometimes manages to match them. I felt their despair and understood their acts which is something a lot of films fail to do.

So, if you like films, go see this. It will be in my 2007 top three.

Wide Sargasso Sea 8/10

This is an adaptation of the book and quite good. I was pleasantly surprised. It kept my interest throughout and I liked Nathaniel Parker (he was in Oilver Parker's "Othello" and a fine adaptation of "Far From The Madding Crowd"). He played the role of Rochester; when ordering the DVD I was not sure he would fit this role, but he did a fine job portraying the younger version of Rochester from Jane Eyre. Karina Lombard is certainly beautiful in a rare sort of way. She is stunning to watch with her subtle facial expressions. The two had great chemistry together! It was a very enjoyable film with beautiful scenery, set in a lush tropical island and intensely romantic/passionate love scenes (I felt these were tastefully done). All the acting was good, in fact, and it was interesting to see Rachel Ward play Antoinette's mother, Micheal York her step-father. I felt this adaptation stayed closely faithful to the idea and tone of the original book, which I read last spring; I can't recall precisely the plot or the narration so I can't fully judge if the film is faithful to that. It made me want to re-read the book. This fine film also depicted well the cultural differences and made the story more believable to me. I will definitely read the book again. I think the film could have been a little longer with a little more mystery and depth and with more about Antoinette's childhood history explored. Also, I think the ending could have been a little more emotional - Lombard's acting was a little too restrained. This is why I choose to give it an 8 and not a 9 rating. I liked the film enough to view it again, several times. Stunning score and scenery and super photography.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - The best thing I can say about this movie is that it prodded me into cleaning the house. I put the movie on and made it about ten minutes in, to the part where the kids were back talking to the grandfather, and I found other stuff to do. I kept the movie on while I cleaned and that's probably the best way to view the movie.

I put the movie on and made it about ten minutes in, to the part where the kids were back talking to the grandfather, and I found other stuff to do. I kept the movie on while I cleaned and that's probably the best way to view the movie.

Yes it was totally stupid. but you might have missed the part where they said grace to the little baby jesus. and then argued about whether it was right or wrong to pray to the little baby jesus. and as far as the costumes and hairstyles, they were right on. Will Ferrel's facial hair and sideburns were typical of the Nascar crowd. they nailed it
