    Hi ya
this is my first post on the forum!!! (Yeeha!) I know I can't vote just yet but I would have voted for Rabbit, Run. Looking forward to reading it with you all during September. I haven't read any of Updike's books before so can't wait to get started!

    Welcome to the Forum, Dollybird!

If you spend sometime in our General Chat and Games section, you might accumulate the necessary 50 posts before the end of month and be able to vote for the book of your choice.

    Updike's Essays

I started reading Updike for his essays, and bought "More Matter", a rather behemoth anthology of essays and reviews from The New Yorker and other publications over the years. I really prefer the essay form of literature, and used More Matter as a study and style guide. Then I got turned on to some of his novels, like Centaur, S, Terrorist, and Witches of Eastwick.

I tried to start a discussion on Terrorist here a while back, but apparently politics is supposed to be hush-hush or politically incorrect or something, although I noticed others were given free reign to bash an old rich white guy for being an old rich white guy, which struck me as being hypocritical.

    Earthboar,

I am sorry to hear that you think some members get different treatment here but our rules are very clear (Discussion of current politics is not allowed) and we try to implement them as fairly as possible, to best of our ability.

However, if there is anything which has been overlooked or if you have any further concerns/complaints, please contact one of our Moderators via PM, instead of bringing them up during Forum discussions.

Oh, I would love to read an Updike book with all of you! I will not have the time this coming month. I hope you enjoy it (and I'm sure you will).

Just wanted to get the 2008 proposal discussion going first and also give everyone a chance to get a copy of the book.
