I'm tempted to say the katana, but I'm purely a layman in distinguishing the finer distinctions between the various Japanese blades used by samurai and/or ninja.

To be sure. The sharp, short dagger used to commit ritual suicide. Mine is a presentation Tanto, given at contests as prizes. I have another also.
But alas and alack. I cannae be seen at th' highland games in full dress kilt w'out me dagger to match, I simply cannae! The skurlies would laugh a' me and I couldnae handle thet. Ye ken the one I mean, nae Soctsman would be seen w'out one, strange though their name be. Ye may hae tae get Kilted tae help, as I cannae come up w' a good pun...

Ach, I remember a scene frae Robert Louis Stevenson's book Kiddnapped. Me Highlander kinsman, Alan Breck Steward is in a grand sword fight, w' Davie Balfour a backing o' him w' t' pistols. One skurlie hae ducked under Alan's sword and he uses his dagger on 'im. Don't gae the full name there, but I'll accept t' short form. Tis enow t' see a man t' the kirkyard any road. Gae me the short form and I'll tell ye the long 'un. An' recall I be a rhyme poet, so I gae ye a clue.
