Yes, but sadly not very well. ( I am a poor strategist...)

yes! or join gameknot.com, it's a chess forum (you play chess games with other people on the internet and you can talk to them too if you want.) even if you suck (like me) it's still really fun!

Very embarrassed to admit that I have never played chess, checkers, chinese checkers and suck at just about any card game

Seems like fun to me as well, and I doubt you suck at chess worse than me...

I used to play, I even taught my little brother how, but I'm sure by now with the length of time I haven't played that I would suck. I've been playing "Othello" with my boyfriend for a few months now, its a nice substitute since he thinks chess is for dorks (working on that)

I like to play chess; I can't say I'm any good at it though. Mostly I've just played my dad and uncle. Sometimes I do better, mostly not x) But they're pretty good. I love fancy chess sets, with crazy carved figures, and have always wanted to buy one.

I played chess at the bars quite a bit, before my friend quit drinking. I was alright (better than him, anyway).

Ah, how funny to see so many closet chess aficionados here. I am something of a chess addict, have played lots of blitz, and regularly attended 4 chess clubs (that was until school re-reared it's ugly head, and I got addicted to these forums).

Are you often on that chess site, mir? Would anyone else like to join?

The best website is ICC, Internet Chess Club. All the GM's play on that site, and it has the best features. Recently they took away their guest privileges, however, so if you want to experience this chess heaven you need to pay a minimal annual fee.

If anybody wants to quickly improve their chess monumentally, study tactics for 10 to 20 minutes a day (ideally for as long as you can, actually). Chess is 99% tactics! Even if you can't solve the problems at first, explore the explanations and study the outcome; it's the best thing for any chess player. Tactics, tactics, tactics!

For variety, my favorite thing to do is set up a board and play through, say, the 100 greatest games of chess ever played, 1 at a time, of course (as one game usually takes me a few hours). Each of which will feature loads of tactics, not incidentally. If you get an annotated, in depth analysis version, you will understand chess much better, and have fun too (if you're into it at all).

That is assuming you know how the pieces move, if this is not so, study piece movement first.

Playing, or losing? Losing is the key word. Not like the kid in "Searching for Bobby Fisher," I can only think maybe 3 moves ahead, if even that.

Now you're talking. I'm an eager chess player. A very fascinating game indeed. I like it because each game is different from each other. The initial position can lead to countless positions and complex thought processes.

A tournament sounds like a mighty good idea. Does anybody know if clubs can organize tournaments at Gameknot?
