It's a very complicated question. The simplest answer is that people believed in different degrees of literality depending on socioeconomic status, philosophical inclination, and to a degree individual variability. But almost everyone believed that the gods existed in some way; including the Epicureans; and even the early Christians (who thought they were demons).

And I say iconic and will defend it as different from famous as a matter of DEGREE. Pewdiepie is famous, Mila Kunis is famous, Ashton Kutcher is famous and Marilyn Monroe is iconic, as is Humphrey Bogart.

There's a new recording of the Tchai PC1, based on the composer's original version, unlike the edited score that has been heard usually. It sounds very interesting, in a good way. And it doesn't hurt that it's coupled with the Proky 2nd PC, one of my absolute favourite pieces of music. I'm sure you'd enjoy it - Prokofiev wrote it after the death of a very close friend of his, so it's extra cheerful
