    Sir William Russell Flint
The original challenge painting is “Retreat From the Sun”
Thanks for introducing me to another watercolorist. Flint’s mastery of the medium is amazing and inspiring.

I must agree with this. The painting of Venice is superb.

I've just checked out Russell Flint out on Google and about 50% of his paintings are of naked young women. You can't help liking the guy.

You are welcome. I love watercolor too. The feelings that watercolorists evoke can be hardly achieve by another medium.

Venice and beautiful women go together, don’t they?

Russell Flint loved women very much……to the end of his life. He painted it at age of 85.

The artist is actually a major figure in one of the major post-WWII art movements.

I have noticed that you and Emil don’t like to give more information about the artist.

It is always a good way to learn about artists……..and keep a tread moving.

The artist is considered by critics and historians to be one of the early works of pop art.
The artist was awarded the William and Noma Copley Foundation Award, 1960; the John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize, 1960; the Talens Prize International, 1970; the Leone d’Oro for his exhibition in the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, 1993; the Arnold Bode Prize at Documenta X, Kassel, 1997; and the Max Beckmann Prize for painting, 2006. He was made a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour (CH) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.

    ftil,

There have been several examples in the past on this thread where St Lukes and others have posted additional information about the artists. The trend has been to start out with a minimalist approach by simply posting an image, wait two to three days add some clues wait add more if needed, etc. I have also seen where participants will include a direct kink to to the artist, rather than regurgitate the info.
I will agree, that there are times when participants wait too long to post clues, usually because we forget.

I notice you tend to unload with numerous clues up front. In this case, it would seem that you know the answer. I will hold off myself on answering this one, in hopes that some of the other past participants might take a shot.

Still no guesses? A major English Pop artist. According to some histories he is credited with having created the first work of Pop Art... or at least the work from which the title of the movement was taken.
