I watched Shutter Island the other night - and it was good! It reminded me of Inception because of the similarity of the themes and the fact that the main characters are very similar and played by the same chap. It was, however, a more intelligent film than Nolan's latest, at least in my opinion. The feeling of claustraphobia and paranoia was well worked, and I think it has one of the highest quality soundtracks I've heard, all very skillfuly implemented.

    9/10.

Yes I thought Shutter Island was pretty good.

I've got a couple of DVDs for Mrs Neely and I (keep her onside): The Reader, In the Bedroom and Doubt don't know what they're like? I fancy Doubt.

The last film I saw was Awakenings with Robin Williams and Robert De Niro, it was OK, nothing special. Before that The Big Sleep, classic fun.

I stopped going to the cinema years ago on the grounds that there's no point. In relation to the Big Sleep, however, I was amazed to see that there is actually an hotel in Eastbourne by that name.

There's not a director or any actors today that could make a scene like this.

Yes we loved that scene and many more like it. He certainly got better service then I do in my local Waterstones or the second-hand jazz bookstore I use (great second-hand shop full of everything, but the loud jazz playing grinds after a while). Sleek stuff indeed!

Cool, I just watched "The Big Sleep" the other night. I bought a Bogie and Bacall set...five DVD's I believe - at a very good price. Did they have chemistry or what? I liked the movie a lot; but I did see it once before. I need to see it again, since I was slightly sleepy that night and didn't catch everything that was going on. Glad I bought the set. Classic films are my favorite!

Bogie was quite a playa evidently. I just watched him in "African Queen" where he won Katherine Hepburn's heart with a three-day beard and not having bathed in quite a while.

Coincidentally, “African Queen” was the last movie I saw as well, a delightful movie in Technicolor. By 1951 Hepburn and Bogart had polished their skills as actors which is evident in the movie. There were a couple of corny and unrealistic moments, but enjoyable overall. --- 6/10

I haven't seen the film but HB won an academy Award for his part in it. Apparently, John Huston kept disappearing to go hunting during the filming and the original choice of the lead roles was David Niven and Bette Davis, so it's surprising that it turned out as well as the critics said. KH is said to have based her role on Eleanor Roosevelt which, judging from excerpts I've seen, certainly figures. I guess the corny and unrealistic moments are best summed up in the publicity for the film, such as:

They never dreamed of being in each others arms, yet the mystic spell of the jungle swept them to primitive, hungry embrace! The greatest adventure a man ever had... with a woman!

Definitely corny at times, but that's the fun of it...and it has it's charm and I love it...I think it gets better after more viewings...of course, talking about 'African Queen'. I also saw that Bogie film recently. He did win the Academy Award for his performance I believe. I watched some extras told about that.

I wanted to thank Neely for suggesting that great documentary on YT. Have you seen "The Future of Food" on Hulu or on DVD? I also highly recommend "Food, Inc."....all tie in with the big corporation idea and how our food supply is being greatly threatened. Another good film is "Dirt" which is about the importance of our 'living soil'. The Indian woman spokesperson in the film I viewed last night, is prominent in this film, about sustainable food supplies. She's an amazing individual.

qim, I don't thing she has bathed either, but she didn't grow a beard....

I need to see it again and I wasn't sleepy! The plot is very thick anyway. I read one review and it said don't even worry about the plot too much the first time, just sit back and enjoy the style. I'll definitely have to look into the set, the African Queen sounds like fun.

No problem, glad you enjoyed it. I haven't seen "The Future of Food" I'll look into that. I've seen most of "Food Inc" yes, it followed on from a lot of stuff I had been reading at the time. I've not heard of "Dirt" I'll look into that. Thanks.

Tangled. Just about the best Disney movie I've seen. And I've seen most of them.

    When I get a moment, I'll elucidate.

True, that, Janine! But somehow she looked cleaner. Maybe it was the fact that she wore white, or maybe it's because she was a lady (say it with a cockney accent, like that other Hepburn might have ).

Clint Eastwood made a movie about the making of The African Queen. It's called White Hunter, Black Heart, which is considered quite decent. I think you all can imagine who the white hunter with the black heart is.

4 Months, 3 weeks and 2 days. A Romanian movie. It is excellent, but not for the faint of heart. 9/10

Mother. A Korean movie. I liked it, but found it a little unsettling. 8/10

Ha, ha. We took the kids to see it this afternoon. I can't say I'm a fan of Disney, but Mrs Neely enjoyed it as did the kids.

    Currently watching Doubt.

Just watched the movie "Inkheart." I hated the book, (the English translation is styllisticaly pitiful, but the plot wasn't too bad.) I figured that the movie could do a lot with the idea, which is why I watched it with high expectations.
The movie was a jumble of sentimentality, poor CG, and bad acting. I could feel my IQ dropping as I watched it...I only lasted through the first half hour.
For the sake of your sanity, (not to mention your IQ xD ) don't waste your life.

I like the movie mostly because of the pleasant memories it brought back, I think; otherwise, there were some cringy-worthy scenes but over all good fun: 7/10
