They were all cute too. :)

A little annoyed that I missed "North by Northwest"... I started to think about movies I watched as a child... I remember watching a movie (B&W?) about a girl who becomes a spy and marries someone in order to get him arrested but the husband and his mother (?) realise that and start poisoning her. There was another spy guy with whom she was in love, I think?
Can anyone help me remember this movie's title? I am inclined to think it had Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman but it might be more of a wishful thinking! :p
Scher, could it be: "Notorious" (1946)...? I have tried to find that for so long now; suppose to be one of the best of Hitchcock's films.
I found this information and review on Amazon:Hope that helps - seems 3 things fit: she marries a spy for her job and he is a mama's boy; also stars Ingrid Bergman/CaryGrant.Quote:
The following review sums up the movie well:Post-War Espionage and Romance in Rio, September 21, 2005 Reviewer: Paul Kellogg (New York, NY)Elegant Cary Grant and beautiful Ingrid Bergman play the leads. Grant is Devlin, an American intelligence agent; Bergman acts the part of Alicia Huberman, daughter of a convicted Nazi spy, and party girl. The American government has an assignment for Miss Huberman in Rio; Devlin delivers the proposal. She is to infiltrate a group of Nazi scientists working on atomic energy. She accepts. Though the leads are romantically attracted, Grant's Devlin tries to maintain a cool distance, yet simultaneously manages to criticize a colleague's wife when he says that Bergman's character is "not a lady." Bergman's Huberman gains entry to the Nazi circle, and then offers to marry the man who's running the operation. That's Alex Sebastian - played by Claude Rains. He's totally smitten with Bergman, but he's also a mama's boy. Mama runs his home, and also finds time to help him when he discovers he's "married to an American agent." These Nazis are a nasty lot. Suspenseful finale.
Thank you, Janine!
I looked it up on IMDB as well and it sounds like "Notorious" is the one! Watched it about 30 years ago and I still remember being captivated by it.
Wonder if I can find it anywhere... Interesting that I have never come across this one on TV either. They show "North by Northwest" quite often, for example.
Thank you once again.
The latest movie I saw was Ocean's 12, a night after seeing Ocean's 11. And the second one was better than the first, but it still disappointed me. Yet, I am still going to watch 13!
Scher, Glad this was the one. I hate it when I can't think of a title but usually I can see the actors and recall some of the plot. It will be available from Amazon soon; I just may buy it. I have been wanting to see that film for years and even the rental stores don't have it. I was so thrilled to find it is coming out and newly restored on DVD. I think I will put a pre-order in for it so it is cheaper. I have a feeling the prices on this one will rise and be way out of our price-range. It is a very sought after film.
Two nights ago I watched the new restored version of:
"Roman Holiday"...I love that film no matter how many times I watch it. It has to be a 10/10 - a true classic! :thumbs_up
Good investment! I think she was so adorable and elegant in "Roman Holiday", no wonder she won the Oscar hands down. Peck and she were wonderful together.
Just a tid-bit of information for you. Hitchcock's daugher, Pat, who appeared in many of his films when a young girl, made the statement on the Larry King special featuring Hitch's leading ladies; that her father felt "Notorious" was his very best film. That was a great talk show segment, by the way. Wonder if we could find it on Youtube.
This one is looking good: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hepburn-Brea...0574982&sr=8-1
Though I love "How To Steal a Million" as well and I have already got Tiffany's.
Well, this girl knows what to ask for from Santa this year! ;)
That does look like a good set and the price does not look too high - is 17 pounds about twice the price here in USA in dollars? I don't know the exchange rate off hand. Just know our poor dollar is not worth as much anymore.
Yeah, haven't seen "How to Steal a Million" in years...would like to see some of the others as well. I will have to check my library - surprisingly they do offer quite a few classic films. They have plenty of Jimmy Stewart films. I guess one of the libraries likes him a lot. I do also.
This set would be a very nice Christmas present from Santa.
A Nightmare on Elm Street - 9/10
One pound is about 1.7 USD these days so it would be something like $30 I think so really not bad at all.
I watched most of these movies as a young kid because my parents, especially my father, loved them, without knowing anything about the actors. When I grew up and watched them again, I realised that the ones I liked including the same stars.
Another favorite Audrey movie is "Wait Until Dark".
Scher, thanks for the conversion. Yes, that would not be bad; of course the UK Amazon is region 2, right? or is it 'all region'. A friend of mine made a gift to me of a Region 2 player so now I can watch those. Many of the new films are indeed 'all region'.
Actually my parents were not movie watchers. They took us to Disney films, etc. It not until I became much older that I discovered these old gems. Now I love old films.Quote:

:)Great film! Been sometime, since I have seen that one. Scary, too.Quote:

Burn After Reading - 9/10
Brad Pitt stole the scenes in this movie, I thought. Too bad the role wasn't a little bigger.
Lars and the Real Girl - 10/10
I thought Ryan Gosling was great in this. Loved this movie!
Philadelphia - 10/10
I watched this for the hundredth time today. Still puts me into a major funk afterwards as it did the first time that I saw it in the theaters back in '93. Excellent movie, though. :thumbs_up
I watched Monday's Girl by Hal Hartly. I give it 4/10
It too preachy and his camera work made it hard to watch sometimes. I much prefer his older movies.
Hello again! It's been quite a while, but I'm back, and of course had to make my first pit stop right here!
While I haven't seen anything recently (back to school and all), I thought I'd share a piece of film news that has me pretty excited (and I think Janine will be too!). They're making a new film version of King Lear to be released in 2010. And not only that, but my favourite actor in the world will be reprising his role as Lear, whom he last played on stage!!!! Any guesses??
Welcome back *Classic*Charm*! I was just coming in here because I noticed your name in the listings. I had not seen you for some time now and wondered where you ran off to. There are a lot of changes to the forum; I did not know if you were aware of it yet - they are pretty exciting. You should take a look at all the new 'improved and creative' profile pages; I can just imagine yours, with lush equestrian themes. Funny you should mention me, eh? and always in conjunction with Shakespeare on film. I can't wait to see the new version. Might I wager a guess - does his first name begin with an A?...his last begin with a H, by any chance? If so I think that will be a very fine production. I can't wait to see it, although I wonder if eventually my guy, Ken Branagh, will get older and play Lear someday; he played the fool in an audio production of the same play...come to think of it; I forgot all about that and failed to listen to it yet...maybe this week.
Glad to see you back and hope you had a great summer!
Green Mile- 10/10! Really inspiring..:)powerfully-told story that lays bare the triumphs and tragedies of the human condition.
read the movie review
We watched Schindler's List today during our History incursion. Wow. Very well done and powerful... But too much gore and blood and nudity really... Especially after the documentary we watched before it! Too much to handle for someone like me.
I love the line "Power is when we have every justification to kill, and we don't"
9/10
sprinks, "Schindler's List" is a very fine movie indeed; it is quite hard to digest, I agree. I have wanted to re-watch it sometime but one has to brace one's self to do so. It is pretty blantant with the cruelty and the blood, death, etc.
That is a great line.
eyemaker, "Green Mile" - 10/10 - YES!!! Great film! My mother and my sister kept telling me to see it and finally I broke down and did. It was amazing and the performances were terrific.
I saw a few films this week: I saw "Roman Holiday" 10/10 - I have seen it so many times but I never tire of it.
I also saw "High Season" with Jacquline Bisset and James Fox and a very young Kenneth Branagh. I have seen this film, which is set in Greece, Rhodes, and I think it is always just as humorous and human. I love this film. I needed something light and short so I watched it the other night. The scenery is so beautiful on the island....gorgeous night swim in a moonlight blue sea with Bisset and Branagh....worth it just to see that part.
I also watched "Fried Green Tomatoes" and forgot just how great that film really was. Jessica Tandy was a wonderful actress and all the acting was top-notch. I loved it!
I also saw an adaptation of D.H.Lawrence's "The Rainbow" which aired on the BBC TV. On the flip side of the DVD was a play by Lawrence - "The Widowing of Mrs. Holroyd" and stared Colin Firth as the husband. Both productions were well worth viewing. My only criticism of "The Rainbow" was that they cut some of the scenes and I was disappointed in that. I saw those on Youtube and so I knew they were missing. It is a pity because the production was very well done.
Well, it was a documentary...
"Screamers"--over the Armenian Genocide. Very good but disturbing film. I actually got to meet the director/producer/editor. 10/10
OH! I saw Brideshead Revisted! It was really good...but a tad bit confusing in some parts. 9/10:thumbs_up:D
Mortis, I love documentaries and I also loved "Brideshead Revisited"...I also read the book. It well deserves a 10/10 - I agree.
I haven't read the book...I'll definetly have to read it though, because I loved the film. It was an amazing cast.
Documentaries is what I mainly watch now, but not only serious documentaries.
There is a new indie film called Baghead...I haven't heard much about it, but I was just wondering if anyone had seen it...?
Haha yes, Janine, the name does happen to be one Anthony Hopkins :D:D
Yes, I'm still working my way around these new changes. It'll take some time I'm sure. Yes, thank you, I did have a good summer. How about yourself?
Oh, and I did see something new recently.
Awake- I can't really give it a score right now. I need to see it again. I must say though, Hayden Christensen is AWEFUL.
Kind of thought so.....hey, *Classic* isn't it 'Sir Anthony'?
It was great, because I became a grandma. My son's wife had a girl in May. I adore my little Brooke Elise. You can see her photos in my profile page along with my other albums...please stop by soon. Glad your summer was great, too. :)Quote:

Well Hayden Christensen is really cute, but you say he was awful; I saw him in something not too long ago (can't remember), not a Star War movie and I thought he was good. Wasn't he also in "Life as a House" with Kevin Kline? I loved that movie. Does he star in "Awake" - what is it about?Quote:

Oh, my mistake. Of course, how could I forget the title!:D
Aww she's gorgeous! Yes, I was still around when she was born in may. I'm glad grandmotherhood is treating you well- it doesn't surprise me in the least!
Awake was a thriller, about this guy who has surgery, but remains "awake" despite being put under general anesthetic. So he can hear everything that goes on and feel everything they do to him, but to everyone else it seems like he's asleep. I still have to wrap my head around it. It also starred Jessica Alba. Yeah, Hayden was really unimpressive. Ironically, after having just seen it, my physics professor decided to write him into an example problem today. Something about tension in the rope that's preventing him form falling to is death...
I've seen "Awake" which is a great movie... a bit disturbing but great... 10/10
Yeah, *Classic*, you are slipping. Well, I guess normally, you just refer to him as "Anthony, my love"...on first name basis by now:(.
I thought you might have been around then. I was raving then like a typical first grandma. We think she is the living end. I haven't seen her now for almost 3 weeks actually. There have been so many complications; I was not feeling well, then their daycare fell through, so now my son had to switch his work schedule to night so he can care for her in the daytime. I guess you have to do what you have to do when you have a little one. She certainly is worth it - she is a wonderful baby; so happy and sweet.Quote:

I had heard about this film. It actually sounds too scary for me since I have had surgeries and hate the mere thought of being able to experience it and yet have them think I was asleep. They actually do have a drug that paralyzes a person, so they don't thrash around and yet they are aware of everything. This movie sounds like that. When I heard of the drug and that they use it on say terminally ill people it made me so sad and disturbed. Some people claim that those in comas can actually hear things also and comprehend them - what a thought - just horrid.:( Some true things are worse than horror stories!Quote:

A Hard Days Night 10/10, I love the Beatles, they're so cute.
Last night "The Blues Brothers," entertaining as ever -- so many car chases.
Oh my! Let's not get tooo carried away, Janine!:idea:
Ooh Beatles Movies. Ack, that reminds me of the time I had the pleasure of watching Yellow Submarine. I'll never do that again. It Almost ruined the Beatles for me forever -a billion/10
Taken - this is one of the best action movies I have seen in a while 9/10
The Mummy three - In my defence I would watch Brendan Fraser paint. 8/10 I loved it.
Filming of Richard Burton's Hamlet on Broadway from whenever?? 1955-60? Unbelievable. Go see it. Burton really knows his stuff. Hume Cronyn is a remarkable Polonius too.
"Reflections in a golden eye" by J Huston 8/10
"Rebel without a cause" by N Ray (i think) 10/10
"Tess" by R Polanski 9/10 (a faithful adaptation)
"Sunshine" by D Boyle 9/10
"28 weeks later" didn't care for this one.
Gone baby gone by B. Affleck
8/10
The Duchess 8/10
It was really well filmed and well acted. It only loses points for being THE SADDEST STORY EVER.
I enjoyed it though.
manolia, I own this film and I love it. Only thing I would change is one of the scenes, where Angel walks in his sleep and speaks to Tess. Otherwise, it was an excellent adaptation; I would highly recommend it. Another great adaptation of Hardy's work is the A&E production of "The Mayor of Casterbridge"; stars Ciran Hinds. I love that one, too.Quote:
