Hi Mark F, I loved "The Elephant Man"; just saw it a few weeks ago; and a year or so ago I saw "The Straight Story". I adored it - it was truly amazing, considering it is based on truth. I read about the real guy who drove his lawn-mower tractor a great distance. It was a very cool film!
"Mulholland Drive" struck me firstly, as being such a 'well constructed film' with 'solid cinematography', as you put it. It was intriguing. I am still working on my interpretation. I love that about the film. I like thinking afterwards about it and all three of these films I mentioned, I did just that. They stayed with me long after viewing.
I have seen Sin City and liked it. It was so much better than 300!!
Hehe, Classic Charm, i own a copy of number 17. It is one of the most obscure Hitchcock films ;) Glad you liked it.
I am curious which is your fav?
Kilt join the newly created Hitchcock fan clud (see the above post by classic charm)
300 and Sin City same style? Have you seen the movies? Frank Miller may have illustrated both but they are extremely different in style. The other big difference is that Robert Rodriguez actually knows how to direct a film. If I see another slow motion shot I think I'll throw up.
Manolia and Classic - Wow, I want to see that one, if it is obscure. I hope I can find it someday. I have a boxed set of older b/w ones. Maybe it is in that set. I have to look later on.
I am curious about that as well.Quote:

Yes,Kilt do! I think Hitch needs his own thread! ;) :thumbs_up :)Quote:

Bukowski: Born Into This
the best documentary i've ever watched. bukowski, proving poetry once again that poetry is written, but lived above all.
Speaking of Sin City, I didn't like it, either, but I don't see much resemblance to 300.
Atmosphere IS subjective. People can see the same movie and one is going to be trilled and the other is going to be "that didn't make any sense" and the third will be "It was soooo predictable" (regular reactions on Videodrome, by the way). How do you explain that? Intellect? Attentiveness? Education?
And whenever I heard Cronenberg compared to Lynch it was "Cronenberg is OK, but compared to Lynch he just sucks". I prefer not to compare them, I think they are totally different directors.
How is 300 crappier than any other action movie? Just because it's popular? It got overrated, but it's just another action movie. A little worse than some a little better than some, nothing special, but nothing too bad, either.
Yeah, I guess I will rewatch it someday, it was supposed to be my rule, after all. I'm too slow on movies, I have to watch them twice.
I was comparing the level of relative popularity, not the movies themselves. Among "arthouse" communities, Mulholland Drive is as big as 300.
Some action movies are well directed (EG Terminator 1 and 2)...300 isn't. Check out the oracle scene, the nauseous slow motion shots and the pathetic acting...The thing is people are saying it's a masterpiece when it's only an overhyped B action movie.
Concerning the film's popularity, you pointed out that Mulholland drive got an 8 on imdb. 300 got 8.1 but that's not what's interesting, if you look at the number of people who've voted to rank the films 300 has nearly 120 000 votes while Mulholland Drive, despite being five years older, only has 60 000 votes. I think that shows the two films don't have the same audiences.
Pretty good documentary about a great writer but not the best. If you're interested in documentaries you should watch Tarnation and Grizzly Man. Check out the links.

The last movie I watched in theaters was 300 (shows how much I go to the movies). It was awesome!!!! I've only dreamed about movies like this! This movie definately surpasses any other movie set in the ancient world.
There you are, Mark F. Some people like the way it was made.
"I think that shows the two films don't have the same audiences." That is what I am saying. In relation to their audiences, the movies have equally high popularity.
Last time I went to a cinema was Pirates of the Carribean 2. I don't like cinemas.
Sorry I must have misunderstood your post, I thought you meant "arthouse" communities liked 300 as much as Mulholland Drive.
Mickyboo and Me.
An Irish movie; quite pathetic and sturggling to be dramatic movie. But since everything seems so fake it's getting boring and pitiable.
5/10.
the last movie i saw that is decently new was "Bridge to Terabithia" i would rate it like a 5 star no doubt! you have to see it. it is one of those kind of movies! go and get it and watch it!
Last film I saw;
Die Hard 4.0
Thought it was great.
Well, I didn't want to do it, but If finally watched Ghost Rider and I liked it so much that now I have Blackheart as my lit net avatar. Something about a flaming man on a motorcycle didn't appeal to me at all, but I was surprised ---the movie was actually good. Of course, those comic book movies are usually good enough so I don't know why those previews didn't grab my attention. Anyway 9/10
Live Free or Die Hard... 4/5
Last film I saw;
Fight club
I'm not quite sure how to rate it. I like it even though I think it's a bit of a weird film.
Pier Paolo Pasolini's "Accattone" 8/10. This movie reminded me of Pasolini's other film "Mama Roma". So if you have seen this one you might want to check out Accattone as well.
Yikes! Knocked Up!
Funny and touching in parts. I have learned to tune out the profanity and look beyond to the story. It seemed quite unbelievable to me that the two ended up together that first night, but I am not part of and do not understand the bar scene thing anyway. I came to like his quirky friends. Her sister drove me crazy but I thought the message in THAT marriage was a good one.
I was entertained and left with a smile.
Les Enfants du Siecle (Children of the Century) - Diane Kurys
I will say first that I find Juliette Binoche's performance as George Sand in this film much more interesting than Judy Davis's in "Impromptu". The latter was much more comedic than this, however, so I can't judge them the same. I'm surprised at the number of bad reviews on Rotten Tomatoes; maybe I have poor taste... :( I found this film pretty good, not at all "too long" or "talky". I have no idea how accurate it is (I did not know that Alfred de Musset was Sand's lover - or that he even existed - before watching this), but I can't say I really watch historical drama for its biographical value - not when we have cool things like books in which to find such matter. Musset is quite a twerp, repeatedly, endlessly, to Sand, and I found it interesting to watch how she reacts to such...uncouth, frivolous behavior on the part of someone she has such affection for, perhaps because I, the uninformed, naive viewer, kept waiting with her for him to get his act together... Of course, JB is hardly the masculine creature that George Sand is said to have been (who had, according to Chopin, a "face like a horse"), which is probably something Davis stresses more in her performance, but it isn't like she plays up her femininity - and I guess it isn't like I'll ever be able to really complain about having to look at Binoche, as a woman, for two hours!
9/10
Paris, je t'aime - dir. various (I am not going to list them all!)
I saw this at the theater today, and I thought it was altogether pretty fantastic. It's made up of eighteen or so short films that take place in Paris and concern love in various forms - and never, fortunately, in the stupid, utterly unrealistic way one comes to expect in a motion picture (and which a title like "Paris, I love you" practically invites). Some of these are really good, and some of them are alright. One of my favorites concerns a woman (Margo Martindale, I believe, is the actress) walking around the city while narrating (from a later date, obviously) her 6-days' stay in the city through what sounds (given her overbearing American accent and stumblings) like a paper written for a French class. One oddball film features a young man and a vampire falling love (starring Elijah Wood as the tourist kid and Wes Craven as the vampires initial victim) that is kind of bizarre. Another, Steve Buscemi accidentally making eye contact (after reading advice specifically to avoid this in a guide-book) with some unkind people at the metro, which is pretty funny. Oh yes, and JB is in another! How bad could it be, really? Anyways, I'm not going to go on about all of it, but it's definitely worth seeing. Twice, in my case, provided it's still here next weekend!
9/10
The last movie I saw was Primeval. I thought it was just going to be a monster movie with a giant crocodile, but I was pleasantly surprised there was much more to the plot than that. So I have to say 5 out of 5. I didn't have high expectations, but it exceed them so I was happy.
Memento dir. Christopher Nolan 2000
The first thing I'll say is that this film is well directed; It's not perfect, but with a plot in which the protagonist can't form new memories and the film beginning from the end and slowly building up without confusing the viewer to the point it gets annoying to watch, I'd say it was well done.
You get the feeling you can actually sympathise with the main character, Leonard, not because he suffers from short-term memory loss but because of the huge effort he makes to actually keep a record of what he is now doing, either with photographs or tatoos. Ultimately he also becomes emotionless in his quest of revenge and cannot even process the feeling of guilt because of course, he forgets what he's done...

Ghost Rider on DVD. I first saw it for my birthday about four months ago, loved it then, loved it now.
Casablanca...Yeah..the same old story...my favorite scene, the duel at Rick's Cafe Americain....the Nazis start to sing 'Die Wacht am Rhein', and the French drown them out with 'La Marseillaise'! Beautiful!10
Transformers . Absolutely hilarious. Optimus Prime's speech was a classic:
"All sentient beings deserve freedom. If we cannot destroy the cube, I will stick it in my chest"
I laughed so hard. There is also a great spoof on a teenager that is trying to sneak out of his house at night. Falls in the 'just another movie' category.
Everything is Illuminated. starring Elijah Wood. A jewish man travels to the Ukraine to attempt to find his father's home town. Indepth characters, interesting dialogue, and a good amount of dialogue. Deals with relevant topics and philosophical questions, but I think I would have rather read the book, because not enough was known about the main character. Recommended 4/5.
Evan Almighty, I liked the second one a lot more than the first.
I know that’s hard to believe because Wanda Sykes got annoying after she opened up her mouth, and to make matters worse they casted, for Carell's wife, the cow from that stupid show on the WB. In the end, Steve Carell and John Goodman pulled through with hilarious performances to save the movie. Oh and Morgan Freeman did a horrible job playing god, but it was so bad that I though it was funny. I just kept on thinking what if Freeman told the guy that he was some maniac, recently escaped from the mental asylum, who believed he was god. Its good to have an imagination while watching a movie.
8/10 for making me laugh, wonder, and almost cry because I really, really, really hate Wanda Sykes.
Pretty much all of them, heh. I haven't watched "The gospel..." yet but have it. "Salo" and "Accatone" are my personnal favourites though. "Uccellaci e Uccellini" is close behind though.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix. I really enjoyed it! Constantly stuff happening throughout the movie. Have to see it again! (i brought my nephew to it, and my boyfriend told me he'd go to see it with me, so best pretend i havent seen it!)
Yes, some trivial parts. Like... ah...do you want me to spill the juice? Anyways, one instance was, instead of Marietta turning the D.A. to the Inquisitorial Squad, the movie made it Cho Chang. The character's irrelevant, anyway, and they had to fit everything inside the 2 hour 20 minute movie. But all I gotta say is Daniel Radcliffe's acting is simply marvelous. Tingling was the part when Bellatrix Lestrange shot the Avada Kedavra right smack at Sirius' heart and Daniel was just so original. Superb acting. I could see the terror and shock on his face, I could feel it too. He was effective.
