I understand, my mother felt that way about me moving out. I just reassured her that I would still visit A LOT. They only live a few minutes away. So I would suggest that, although you can unfortunately not spend Thanksgiving with your son, you can always have a family-only type day or evening when he comes back. That way you still get some quality time together.
