I sincerely hope I am not right in the picture I am getting Wiff!
"I sincerely hope I am not right in the picture I am getting Wiff!"
Unlikely, but, of course, the picture you are getting is probably the one you're meant to get.
barbara0207 is getting warm, except that she's too warm.
Onion?
Indeed - Onion it is - a brain teaser that amused the learned clerks of Exeter in the eleventh century or thereabouts.
Your turn, Scher...
Quite so, that one is worded so as to lead one down the wrong hallway, and unfortunately, once that picture pops into your head, you may forget about solving the problem, as you fear you might be right and wish to not announce the fact! Way to balance the clues, Scher. You're up next! http://www.cosgan.de/images/midi/figuren/e010.gif
How can you measure 4 litre of water using only 3 and 5 litre containers?
Two methods:
1. Fill the 3.
2. Pour contents into 5.
3. Fill 3 again.
4. Fill the 5 from 3.
5. Empty the 5.
6. Pour the 1 remaining in 3 into 5.
7. Fill 3.
8. Pour 3 into 5, which now contains 4. =)

A weapon also used for escaping from various entanglements...it almost never leaves the adventurer's side. Can you crack this case?
I am not certain this is what you want Robin, but it fits. It is a Kubaton, a key-ring baton weapon. Since it can hold keys, or, inside the hollow, picklocks or throwing spikes, in this case, a knife, it can be used for escape. One would always carry it, very small, very portable. This one I own. There is an art to using one as a weapon that I understand is part of police training.

Oooh...not what I had in mind, Pen, but fascinating all the same.
Don't worry, Pen - I'm sure you can swing the answer to your side somehow. =)
machete
(ma-sh-e-tee)
Actually, machete isn't right, either. Maybe I'm not as good as giving clues as I thought.
Ever seen an indy - I mean, indie film? ;) (Think outside the bladed box.)
Bullwhip... thus to entangle legs, or to tangle around a handy treelimb or rafter and swing away. I would have probably refered to Bat Lash for this one, or perhaps Lady Rawhide, Zorro's Lady sidekick. Am I right?
Robiiiin! We need to know what it was! :D
Sorry - been away a bit.
Yes, indeed - the ball's in Pen's court!!
Lessee...
A part of me is made by burning wood,
Burned but not burned away complete,
Another part of me should be mined,
By careful miners indeed, by St. Pete!
The third part is also found below,
Beware, lest the very Devil himself you meet!
The parts three combine to one,
The formula is ancient and precise
Among the three is healing, warmth, and flavor
Together they may send your soul to hell or paradise...
The three and the one for this riddle I think
Are the answers I seek, me auld China Plate!
Good luck...
Wow. No one has got this one yet? It would be wrong to give any extra hints as someone who wishes to remain anonyamous solved it almost as soon as it went up as is, right in every aspect. If they could do it, others will just have to think harder, because the information is there. Good luck!
Pen
OK. As this has been up for five days with no hits, allow me to give credit where credit is due. Wiff saw threw all the padding to the heart of the matter at once and gave me the answer in a PM the very day it went up. He didn't want to pick the next riddle, or ruin the game so quickly:
So let's see about this, shall we:
A part of me is made by burning wood,
Burned but not burned away complete,
You use this every time you grill out, it's called "CHARCOAL"
Another part of me should be mined,
By careful miners indeed, by St. Pete!
The word "mine" suggests a mineral, if you got the charcoal, you would be looking for something to add to it that is a mineral. I call St. Peter "St. Pete" for a good reason. "SALTPETER" is a mineral mined, that mixed with charcoal and
The third part is also found below,
Beware, lest the very Devil himself you meet!
We are going back underground for a third additive, which is plentiful in hell. Hell is describe a burning with "fire and brimstone". Brimstone is SULFER.
And now
The parts three combine to one,
The formula is ancient and precise
Among the three is healing, warmth, and flavor
Together they may send your soul to hell or paradise...
The three and the one for this riddle I think
Are the answers I seek, me auld China Plate!
CHARCOAL, SALTPETER, and SULFUR, properly mixed form GUNPOWDER.
SULFUR is something from which many drugs are made.
CHARCOAL provides a lot of heat as anyone grilling on the Fourth of July could tell you.
SALTPETER can be used as a salt substitute, as it tastes somewhat like salt, it needs refining.
GUNPOWDER will certainly kill, sending you to wherever you go when you die.
China Plate is Cockney rhyming slang for "Mate", but here, it means what it says. China is where gunpowder originated.
That's all folks!
Someone else do the next one!
who's next?
You if you want!
Without the head it has no bite,
Without the body no length of flight,
Without the tail it could not fly at all:
The guy from the Hispaniola has missed roll call...
Weapon named?
Good luck.
Pen
I shall guess - an arrow?
Aye, Matey, Mister Arrow is missing from the Hispaniola, and and arrow has a head, shaft, and tail. The longbows used to have the greatest range, longer shafts, pulled back further increased the fps. An arrow that was ill-feathered would miss, unable to fly right.
You're up, brother!

Why are manhole covers round, not say rectangular or square - which would be much more easier to produce?
(There are a number of answers to this question - I will count the question answered when my favourite explanation is presented.)
Yup. That's the most common answer, I guess, and it is rather elegant, so it's my favourite.
There are other answers too, like:
*round covers are easier to roll
*round covers don't have nasty corners that could break tires
*round tubes are the strongest form
etc
