I just finished a graduate program and landed on a nice job here in Houston, Texas. I am very busy trying to settle myself well in the company. But, I read as much as I can in between my projects. My main interest is poetry and read many poems in between my books and while reading a book. I look forward to participating in the forum even when the only thing I could do is reading your posts.

Hello, everyone. This is the first time I have posted on this site. I am eager to begin a new adventure. I am an English teacher in a high school alternative learning environment.
My students are at-risk in many areas and I continue to look for innovative and relevant ways to introduce and teach the literature for the students. I work with World Literature, American Literature and Britsh Literature. I need all the help I can get. So bring it on and forward and all that you have to help me arm my arsenal to make literature a real and heartwarming adventure for my students as it is to me.

I read a lot of poetry and fiction, but I only write poetry and essays. My favourite poets are E. E. Cummings, Charles Bukowski, Philip Larkin and Sylvia Plath; my favourite novelists are Alan Hollinghurst and Haruki Murakami. Although I haven't read their works extensively, I also really liked what I got so far from Albert Camus and Ray Bradbury. I'm really picky on the voice of the text, which may explain the shortness of this list...
My favourite playwrights are Tennessee Williams, Sarah Kane and, of course, Shakespeare!

I'm Steven, an 11th grade student in California. AP classes across the board.
I break dance, and take interest in swimming, basketball, tennis, and anything physical. Sports are just that much fun to play.
I'm just a casual reader, since I don't have much time for reading. But here's a list of what I am reading.

If old and ugly is the best disguise, I am invisible. Poetry holds me down and good poetry slams my face into the sidewalk. I'm not saying that that is a good thing, but it is so rare that it is worthy of note. I am only here a short time but it seems like a lifetime. Hack:alien:

I’m 26, and as a child I loved reading! But after leaving school, education books took over and I never got back into reading for fun. After making a conscious effort this year, I’ve fallen back in love with books. At the moment I’m trying to read classics that I should have read, but haven’t, as well as any others that cross my path. I also actively use bookmooch.com, as I live in Japan and buying new English books all the time is too expensive!!

I am Neil from the United Kingdom. I'm 49, father of 3, with long term partner, I am currently reading Wizard of the Crow by Ngugi wa Thiong'o and I'm really enjoying it. Those African writers can sure spin a yarn in a way that English writers seem to have lost the art of.
I went to University quite late in life [in my 30's] and that's where I discovered authors like Ngugi and Soyinka, as well as all the important Russian and Indian writers [we actually did a module on Salman Rushdie!]. It was a mind-broadening experience and I'm really glad I did it.

I am brand new, and please forgive my awkwardness. I just started a new thread, by mistake I think, asking for help finding a poem, and of course now I'm not sure where the "new thread is," amazing how fast one loses things.
Anyway, if you can find it, anyone, I am quoting a partial poem I found in an 18th century old Bible from an old used bookstore, favorite places I find myself in often, and as a retired English HS teacher, I can't pass up trying to figure out who wrote this, and most importantly the entire content of it, I wrote out what I had from a clipping, looks like from a newspaper, or perhaps magazine of that era, and it has a partial "name" of E. LAD, and a partial title of "It IS N....", then it goes on thus:
To aplogize...
To begin....
To admit error....
To be unselfish. (this is the first line where the "paper" didn't tear into the line and you could actually read the entire sentence with the period at the end)
To take advice.
To be charitable.
To be considerate.
To endure success. (I wrote in the thread that I started that I thought this was charming, as in meaning to humbly enjoy success?, or perhaps not make such a big deal out of success but quietly enjoy it?--just a few random thoughts of this line)
To keep on trying.
To avoid mistakes.
To forgive and forget.
To keep out of the rut.
To make the most of a little.
To maintain a high standard.
To recognize the silver lining.
To shoulder a deserved blame.
BUT IT ALWAYS PAYS. (this last line was all in caps.)
So if anyone has ANY idea where I can find its author and the entire poem, and even better if I can find anymore of this person's work, I would be ever so grateful. I find this whole thing pertinent not only in 18th century era but also in today's time in the 21st century, our century and with our world. What does anyone else think?

My name is Constance and I live in Las Vegas, NV. I am a retired HS English Teacher, among other things these days ;-). I went to college in my early years and then went back at age 50, to get back into teaching again, this time for the public sector, prior to that I taught for corporations. So I graduated at age 54 with a BA in English and a BA in Communication Studies and began again. Now nearly 10 years later, I like to write and volunteer to teach disabled and sick children in hospital etc. It's nice to be in this welcoming place isn't it?Quote:

Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" - and loving it. look forward to meeting many like minded people here. so a little bit about myself, I've just graduated medical school, and in 2010 I start my internship. As such, I have a fundemental interest in philosophy, in particular ethics. I'm currently reading the lectures by Aristotle collectively known by his followers as the 'organon' - I have many questions and idea's and would love some discussion. I have also read, quite a bit of galen, hippocrates and socratese. I'm not big on arguements, but revel in discussion and different opinions, so please if you have any interesting discussion topics, invite me to join in, I would love to be involved.
I also love writing, i'm currently writing a series of short story fantasy/thriller (not unlike HP Lovecrafts 'dream cycle'), I'll probably post some on here for criticism. I've also have a novel undergoing editing for publication... very exciting.

Between this Network and WikiSource I am getting my hot little hands on books I haven't read in years as well as new companions. Right now I am enjoying Bronte's Villette; I'm 4 chapters in and what a remarkable piece of literature it is, what a remarkable person wrote it. If Charlotte Bronte was a champion of anything, it was that all should endeavour to lead as full a life as possible in their own person, because any companionship at all is a chance encounter to be prized among congenial tempraments if for no other reason than it's uncertainty, however brief. Yes, I sneaked a peek to the end. Tragedy by the bucketful, but not a case of 'alone again, naturally', and I don't see her drying up on a sofa like a Madam Clennam (Little Dorrit) dispensing spleen. After all, she has before her bookends, so to speak, a school and a pensionier, and not just work but meaningful fulfillment between them. Must post again when I've got on a bit.
Oh, yes, an introduction. Hello, some more! I'm from Southern California, married, and have fur folk in the garden who have discovered how to navigate the goldfish pond. Busy with oily things, but will take time to go camping. Love the dessert, love the mountain, don't like things too wet. Oh, well. Enough?
