Ooh, check my latest blog. I'm kind of proud of it. http://www.online-literature.com/forums/blog.php?b=7699.
Yes it gets mixed in with imperialism. Perhaps I don't know enough of Kipling's views on that. Surely based on one poem everything else can't be tarnished. And the past is the past. You can't judge a writer on his views by today's standards. We would never read Homer if that were the case. I would love to see your thoughts on Kim in the thread.
Mhm, maybe Kipling fell out of favour because of his imperialist "white man's burden" attitude at places . Although I must say I've always loved The Jungle Book... The class wasn't on Kim alone, it featured some more literature of British India, including Forster and Orwell. We had some heated discussions about whether Kim is imperialist writing or whether it doesn't have some more subtle subversive points to it. Maybe I'll join the book club's thread . Nah, don't worry about your hair! Ebony and ivory looks great! .
Oh a class on Kim sounds great. I'm a little surprised. For some reason Kipling seems to be a forgotten writer, at least when I was going to school. Perhaps he's making a comeback. Yeah, I guess hitting 47, which means I'm nearly 50, and with all the young people on lit net, I do feel a little different. Plus my hair has been rapidly going grey. But I'm am as physically fit as ever in life. I go to the gym three time a week. So there is no demise or decline, I'm happy to report.
I must say, age seems to have become something of a topos for you these days, Uncle Virgie! Should we start worrying? Your reading sounds interesting! I had a class on Kim last term, I quite enjoyed it .
When one is married for seventeen years, the charm wears off and I've become old hat, as we say. But she loves me. I am fine, just extremely busy at work. Reading some good stuff: Kipling's Kim, Austen's Persuasion, and Shakespeare's Richard II. I bet you're excited. Who wouldn't be? Ah, to be young and a college student again and travel the world.
Well, if your wife is unaware of your courteous nature, then I conclude you must be an Intenet-charmer . I'm sorry to hear Barbara has disappeared! But maybe real life just caught up with her, and she'll surface again soon . I'll be starting at Cambridge in October this year. Can't wait . But anyway, how are things with you?
Charmer? Don't tell my wife. It would surprise her. Well, I'm just trying to be friendly. You're a nice young lady and I'm a sorry example for an old man. Just thinking of my friends. It's a shame Barbara has disappeared. She was a nice lady. How wonderful about Cambridge. That is great!! When do you start?
You are a charmeur of the worst kind, you know that ;-). These last weeks were one busy mess for me, I had a lot of interviews for my year abroad at a British university in fall. I just got the results last weekend, and I'm going to Cambridge for the year! I'm just starting to realise how incredibly lucky I am, so while the last weeks I've been busy preparing for the interviews, now I'm busy celebrating . I hope life's as good to you at the moment?
What's new with my smart, talented friend?
