  1. Literacy and Revolution

by , 11-24-2024 at 08:14 PM (Memories of the 28th Century)
A little while ago, I was reminded of the root causes of political freedom and relative equality. Someone asked about the demographics of the people who threw off the royals here in the United States of America. I commented that they were mostly of British ancestry, but they were literate. That reminded me of some information that I learned a number of years ago. In 1770 CE the world's average literacy rate was about ten or fifteen percent. the literacy rate in Western Europe was about 40 %. in ...
  2. Import Tariffs

We don't often thing about taxes on imports in the country. Import tariffs used to be the main source of income for the federal government, but federal; expenditures became so large that they couldn't be covered by income tariffs. Income taxes used to be greatly restricted, and they were only paid by rich people. I remember going into the kitchen, when I was a child, and I heard my father say, “But only rich people pay that.” And my mother replied, “I guess that means that we are rich.”

When I first heard of Bitcoin, I called it “tulip bulbs”, referring to the financial balloon in trading tulip bulbs in the Netherlands in the 1630's. The top of the market was something like 2500 guildhall, but they came back to earth. It doesn't bother me, if people want to thrown money away, but one of the a reasons for government to exist is to stop some people from throwing their money to people who are engaging in fraud.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Government has allowed many people ...
  5. Marketing Hype

by , 07-28-2024 at 04:44 PM (Memories of the 28th Century)
Yesterday afternoon, I had an interesting conversation with a recent college graduate. I was surprised that he didn’t realize that marketing fluff had taken him in as much as it had. It all started because his so-called “smart phone” wasn’t working, but my cheap flip-phone was, so I told him the time, and he and I were waiting for the same bus (which was disgustingly late and, even worse, we got on the wrong bus, but that’s another story.)

I mentioned that it was not surprising that ...
