I think that the most tragic couples in literarure are Snape/Lily and Murtagh/Nasuada.

Both couples had to be separated, both men were willing to go to extreme lengths to save their 'other half' (as a different writer would say). One succeeded, one didn't.

The song above fits two couples perfectly.

What is your choice of most tragic couples in literature?

Just think, now they could be married in Massachusetts (if Wilde could have obtained a divorce).

Rochester and Jane Eyre. The end was not all that sweet and marmalade as one would have wished.

Obviously Tristan and Isolde, but Cathy and Heathcliff are right up there in terms of tragedy.

Rochester and Jane Eyre. The end was not all that sweet and marmalade as one would have wished.

What about Rochester and his first wife Antoinette in 'Wide Sargasso Sea' , that is a tragic marriage and end.
