Not sure where he fits into your list, but Paul Auster is always a good American author to delve into. I would add him to number 4.

Eugene O'Neill and Arthur Miller. The latter even wrote an essay on modern tragedy.

3. Social problems in AMerican literature of the mid-war period.
Don't know.

4. Literature as a factor shaping the American Dream.
Shaping or destroying? I guess F. Scott Fitzgerald.

5. Ethnic voices in the 20th century American Literature.
James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison
