I haven't watched The Haunting (the original, natch) in a few years, so I think I'll put that on, with It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown as short subject.

Great new avatar Sher, I think you should stick with that...

I'm obviously not fussed with any of that sort of stuff but I'll make a bit of effort for the kids. Mrs N has spent loads of beer money on Halloween tack and I'm thinking of carving a pumpkin, never done that before. I'll have to find a soup recipe or something as I'm not wasting the middle bit. Any easy ideas welcome.

I Love Halloween. Maybe I'll do this one.

(I love it, I'm forgetting Satanists now.)

Scher you have the avatar I want!

we don't really have Halloween here on the ice but ever since we got invaded by Toy's 'r' us it is slowly becoming a thing... I am not a fan though. but since it is a tradition in many countries I'll at least be cheery about it.

I hate the commercial side of everything. I just like the spirit of it, and especially the History of it. I like being outdoors at night, having a fire - not parties.

Yup, I've also dressed myself up for the occasion :D.

Until five years ago in Belgium there wasn't any Halloween, but then the shops decided that there had to be something between 'back to school' and Sinterklaas (6/12) so they decided to do Halloween, then they had an occasion to sell all their excess pumpkins no doubt.

Here in Germany where we live there is also some Halloween going on, but mainly in the commercial area, not really anywhere else. I just think people like putting candles in pumpkins, whether fake or not (mainly fake, real is much too time-consuming).

Well, it's fun isn't it...

I'll throw my hat into the ring for this Halloween party.

And I'll throw in some treats:

And it wouldn't be Halloween without this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOnqjkJTMaA)

Have a look at the BBC Good Food site, Neely - they have a whole section devoted to pumpkins (including how to carve them) on their Newsletter this week.

If you want a really creepy read, may I recommend Susan Hill's The Man in the Picture? Only don't read it alone at night - like MR James - or you'll be in a very twitchy state....

Cool.

It's big, it's broad,
It's broad, it's bright,
It fills the sky of All Hallows' Night.
The strangest sight you've ever seen,
The Monster Tree of Halloween.

The leaves have burned to gold and red,
The grass is brown, the old year dead,
But hang the harvest high. Oh, see!
The candle constellations on the Halloween tree!

The stars they turn, the candles burn,
And the mouse-leaves scurry on the cold wind bourne,
And a mob of smiles shine down on thee
From the gourds hung high on the Halloween Tree.

The smile of the Witch, and the smile of the Cat,
The smile of the Beast, the smile of the Bat,
The smile of the Reaper taking his fee
All cut and glimmer on the Halloween Tree.

Oh, Juniper, I wish I'd had that poem when I was teaching! I can see all sorts of art work, creative writing, drama coming out of it.

One year, I borrowed my neighbour's garden besom and propped it in the cloakroom together with a black cloak and a pointy hat so that the children saw them as soon as they arrived. After the first breathless, 'Miss! Miss! There's a ....witch?? In the cloakroom??' we had a very creative day on witches coming to school, If I met a witch, witches' parties, painting, drawing, modelling, talking, writing, listening to stories and poems. Not much else got done that day but it's only once a year and we had the rest of the week to catch up on Maths etc. I suppose with the National Curriculum nowadays there isn't room for a fun day like that anymore - sad, really.

I love Susan Hill, but The Woman in Black is the creepiest read ever... I read it a few Halloween's ago, and I always recommend it to others, who have loved it too, in a really pants-changing scary way.....:yikes: I can't wait for the film, although it looks as if it may have been tampered with story wise. Anyway take a look at this:

Yes, I was scared silly by The Woman in Black too! But The Man in the Picture really freaked me out. Hill has just published another 'chiller' - The Small Hand - which I'm told is just as creepy but I haven't plucked up enough courage to read it yet. The wind whistles in the chimney....

Found out that melon ballers are perfect for scooping out the pumpkin innards and carving out the face.

Too many coincidences goin on around here; first "Má Vlast Moldau" and wouldn't you know, I resorted to the ice cream scooper last night to gut our pumpkin. There's a particular spoon I normally use, but I was unable to locate it.
The pumpkin serves as the head for this year's "Mozartgeist"
I'll share a photo soon.
