i have a few options, not sure which to go for right now...

-the jewel of seven stars/bram stoker
-dracula's guest and other short stories/bram stoker
-the fall of the house of usher/poe
-the narrative of arthur gordon pym of nantucket/poe
-the inheritors/william golding
-day of infamy/walter lord
-the adventures of tom sawyer/twain
-the vampyre, the werewolf and other gothic tales of horror/polidori et al

any ideas?
recent reading has included Dracula (again), The Vampyre (again), Paradise Lost, With The Old Breed, Frankenstein (again), various short stories by Mary Shelley, and today i finished Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

hahaha a beaut he may be, but as i've concentrated mostly on gothic horrors for the duration of my study,my good Sir Tom seems not to fit in so well.

although, maybe a break from the dark would be nice...

Is there any particular reason for your reading of Gothic tales, dw? Are you writing a thesis or is it just personal interest?

If it's a thesis or piece of school work, I'd go with Fall of the House of Usher as you don't seem to have tackled Poe yet.

If it's general interest, then perhaps it's time for a break with something different, in which case I'd go for The Inheritors, (though I'm wondering why you have picked that particular Golding).

personal interest really.
i find endless romance in gothic horrors and it fascinates me.
i hardly expect to find similar romance in Poe's work though. from what i've read, the poor guy was just plain dark.
i read Lord of the Flies awhile ago, and i was recommended The Inheritors. is it not as well recognized?

Why choose between short stories like Fall of the house of Usher and novels like Huckleberry Finn?

The short stories will take you like 5 minutes to read and then you can try the novels.

I know it's not one of your options up there, but The Picture of Dorian Gray (Wilde) is a staple of Gothic fiction. It's a pretty fast read too.
