I tried this thread in another part of the forum, I did not get any responses so I am moving it back here where I found so many helpfull people.

I have wrote in a previous thread about trying to value some books for my mom. I got some pictures of te 3 most interesting to me.

The first is what I believe to be a first print of Charles Coffins "The Story of Liberty"

The second is a Notre Dame with the only date below a description of the origin of the story. 1831 is the only date I can find printed on the book it has a few dates from the 1800s in pencil on the inside cover.

Finally a 1950 Ogden Nash "Good Intentions" this is one of a three book set all signed by Ogden Nash with a bunch of news clippings from newspapers of the time.

I would appreciate any information, history and an esitmated value if possible.

Thanks,

Jake

I thought these might have brought some interest. I am not a literary buff but I thought these were the best of the best.

Mackessy,
Your post hasn't gone unnoticed. The aroma wafting up from the old paper lured me in. I have quite a few "old" books passed down to me and yes, I have a strange fixation with taking a obligatory sniff of the pages when I read them.
Anyhow, I'm particularly envious of your "Notre Dame", the engraving is wonderful. As for value, I don't have much to offer. Perhaps you could check Amazon, or other internet bookseller, by searching that specific publication to see if others are being sold and compare prices.

They really do smell good don't they? I collect a lot of things, comics is one of my things. I love the smell of a long box full of inky paper.

I'm something of a collector myself, stamps, coins, old post cards, etc.
You aren't planning to sell these are you?
Personally, I wouldn't be able to part with them.

Well I am trying to raise money for my mom really. She used to run an antique shop but is now disabled and living on low income. I am trying to help raise some money for her. I am a college student now and live only on scholarships and student loans. I am not trying to put out a sob story but I would like for everyone to understand my motives.

I searched the publisher of the Notre Dame and I can not seem to find anything to show value. I found something about the publisher in 1880's but I need to check a penciled date thats inside the cover. It is dated in pencil sometime in the later 1800's, but I am unsure.

Any thoughts?

It's a stab in the dark, but would a library have any information on something like this? Editions and all. My friend's cousin made a living off of selling old books for a while. It sounded like he used ebay to do pretty much everything. Those are my only "helpful" ideas. Good luck.

Sorry about that Mackessy, I believe you did mention that before. You now have me curious, so I will spend a few minutes as they come and do a little digging myself.
Keep us posted and good luck.

I have no experience is this matter and am only listing what I was able to find by a few quick internet searches, but here are some online appraisal resources.

http://www.pbagalleries.com/bibliobot/ -- they seem legit and do online appraisals.

http://www.abebooks.com/books/RareBooks/appraisers.shtml -- they have appraisers or you could see if they have anything similar in their inventory (they say they have 40 million books.

I hope that gives you a place to start. If you want more options, I'll leave the googling and leg work to you. :)

You can put in the title, publisher, and date in an advanced search and see if a book is for sale and the asking price. Unless a book is a much wanted first edition or signed by the author, age alone doesn't make it valuable. Condition is everything. These books are in rather poor condition so, except for the signed Ogden Nash, I doubt if they are worth much. For example, last year I bought a nice copy of a Dumas novel with superb engravings for $10. There were literally thousands of books by European authors published in the US in the 19th century.

I am just checking in with all of you. I have tried searching as described, I am unable to locate these with the exception of the nash books. I think The Story of Liberty is my best bet... any advice or info from the board members would be great.
