is this meant to be a clinical evocation of a panic attack, which comes almost without reason and as mysteriously passes? Otherwise it's hard to make sense of the total reversal in the last verse.

right on the dot. Prior to last night I never had one, I thought about leaving out the last verse but then it wouldnt end the way it ended for myself.
