until the lion learns to speak
the hunter's word will be the
commonly held belief...
dazed master of the animal
kingdom... glory is brief,
fleeting... bar room chat
is cheap...only roaring legacy
runs deep

This is a really awesome short piece. Superb use of rhyme, line breaks, and enjambment. Thematically it reminds me of the old "winners write the history books" quote but here it's more about how those on top gets to determine the rightness of their actions.

thanks guys... glad you enjoyed my short little piece. i stole the title from a collection of hemingway shorts, in which the first story ('The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber') centres around lions and hunters. the imagery and bravado in it really stuck with me and ultimately inspired this poem!

I think this style would sound very good as spoken word poetry. It has that kind of fluent energy that could captivate an audience

I second Breathtest. It would sound fantastic read out loud, because it has a natural rhythm that the voice can accentuate.

A little treasure of a poem! Very nice.
I agree, it would be good spoken aloud. But it would be truly awesome if spoken aloud by William Shatner. I'll see what I can do, guys.
