View Full Version : nobody can keep their eyes off of the pinstripes.
I'm dedicating this thread to knew discoveries. New interests and hobbies you've found an interest in and would like to keep up/learn more about in the New Year.
As of last month, I have taken up longboarding, also known as sidewalk surfing. I absolutely love it. I've only just started but it feels very free, is a lot of fun, and gets me to places quickly.
So what, if any, are yours?

It may be a regular activity for some people, but since it's something I haven't done on a regular basis, I would say that running is increasingly becoming an interesting activity for me. I can't run very fast yet, I lack the proper training, but I've discovered that I'm improving and it feels nice.

Max, I'm not doing it as much as I was a year ago, but I was into running recently also. I was sprinting, mostly, but noticed that I was improving pretty quickly and it was making as much of a difference to my body as jogging used to. Then I heard about this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-intensity_interval_training#Tabata_Method
which maybe explained it.
Some people might really enjoy jogging for very long periods, but it can be hard on the body for some other people--and it takes a lot of time. Are you sprinting? I think that is a pretty good option, and its pretty fun I think.

OH YEAH, my new discovery...
V-8 juice. I used to hate it, but I've learned to actually love it. If I am starving, a quick can of V-8 can fix the problem for an hour or so, unbelievably. And it is an effortless serving or two of vegetables, and makes me feel like a million bucks.

I took up cross-stitch a couple of months ago, so I could help my daughter with her's (she asked for it for Christmas). I find it really relaxing, and it's not too instrusive that you can't still hold a conversation.
I also started learning Japanese. I read a lot of Japanese fiction and I always find myself wondering if I'm pronouncing things correctly so it seemed a natural step. Progress is slow, but it's gradually sinking in. I'm learning the hiragana and katakana (Japanese syllabary) too, so I'll be able to form child-like words soon. Maybe :D

I'm thinking of continuing my tour around the world in promotion of literary theory. Here's an old old snap of me and Judith Butler, together in the good old days, the days when theory was popular:

You can see how happy I was back then. I got her autograph and everything!!!
This is me now:

Times are hard but somehow I still manage to smile.

As to the real question, sorry. I'm too busy and happy with what I'm doing at the moment to really thing about anything else.
