Yes. They are largely pointless and necessarily incomplete. But as we round out the first decade of the new millennium, I thought a 'Best of' was probably inevitable.

So, my list (:brow:) of the ten best works of English language fiction published between 2000 and 2009:

1. The Corrections - Jonathan Franzen
2. Cloud Atlas - David Mitchell
3. Tree of Smoke - Denis Johnson
4. The Human Stain - Philip Roth
5. True History of the Kelly Gang - Peter Carey
6. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay – Michael Chabon
7. The Road – Cormac McCarthy
8. The Lay of the Land – Richard Ford
9. John Henry Days – Colson Whitehead
10. Elizabeth Costello – JM Coetzee

The 39 Steps is always on lists. And isn't it spelt 'Buchan' anyway?

After reviewing the list from the editors of Time which was recently published, I decided to listen to Harold Bloom's CD, 'How to Read and Why?'. In it, Bloom says that 'Blood Meridian' is the most innovative novel since 'Moby Dick.' Now I can't think of any useful puropse for Harold Bloom.
