Leaf Sucker
It's Monday.
The leaves were raked to the curb yesterday,
all yellow and piling high.
The air is cool, frost still lingering here and there,
and quiet,
'cept for the distant whirring, slowly getting louder,
The Leaf Sucker, on its way.
Proud of my offering, I wait behind my lace curtains,
the vacuum hose now gulping and swallowing,
I watch,
Three men, bored, disinterested,
One to drive, one to rake, one to conrol the hose,
Not knowing what they do, but their job,
And I forgive them.
The yellow wall, gone now,
I go to my car for work,
Glancing down,
The most gigantic leaf,
I grab it and throw it in the car, locking the doors.
I sneak it into my classroom saying,
"Look! Look at this gigantic leaf!"
I am such a sucker.
