Danger

“Danger”

The warning system was now on as James stood in the middle of the street looking around. He thought about back to his childhood, how he was sent to Washington to be schooled in math and science. He thought about how his best friend was another boy who was assigned to be James’ lab partner. He thought about the friendship they had built up while in classes learning about the silly theories of quantum physics and having to take certain theologically based class that as geniuses they did not heed to them selves.

“Danger”

The repetition of the warning system’s audible cry snapped James out of his seemingly long drawn out flashback stupor. He then thought to himself that he was ready, he was always ready, he knew he was ready when he had obtained his masters degree in physics and a bachelors in chemistry at the age of 20. He knew he was ready when he returned to his home town in Texas to build a research center to begin work of a highly classified project funded entirely by the federal government. He knew he was ready when at the age of 12 he left his home, his family, his life to travel to the pacific northwest to learn all that he could as fast as he could.

“Danger”

Again the voice bellowed from the loud speakers located around the town. James started thinking back to when he returned home to Texas after ten years of absence. He was working for the government to build the previously mention highly classified thing that not even James knew what it was except that the fields of mathematics and physics influenced its completion and success. He decided that the facility that must be built would be built in a small poor looking town to keep its secrecy intact.

“Danger”

This time the voice just passed through his head with no meaning to it, his thoughts began to race faster and faster. Things like the time spent working on the project, the realization that he had been doing research for a large bomb like weapon, the look on the face of all his employees’ faces when he told them to all get out of the town as fast as they could and never ask any questions. He remember that the a general had told him that the weapon was not ever going to be used hopefully its just better if America is for sure still on top of the technological mountain of the world. He remembered back to the news report he got when he found out that his weapon has been used on another country and he remembered the horror he saw of pictures, video , even the sounds of the report made him sick.

“Danger”

His thoughts were to heavy for him to take, but suddenly he remembered his wife, his two beautiful sons and the lovely Sunday afternoons they all spent together. Their smiles in his mind calmed him down enough that he remembered what he was doing now. He looked around at what he had done or at least affected in a strong way. He looked on at all the business buildings that had not been there a few years ago, he looked at all the houses that only a small while ago where not anywhere to be seen. He took in all the scenery and remembered all the logical thinking he had done all of his life and then thought to himself how irrational his actions were right now.

“Danger”

He had issued the evacuation, because when he received the news of the bomb being used he decided that he was going to never let anymore be made. He would destroy his factory, and every scrap of research that he had done for the project in the past six years. He had rigged and very elaborate series of bombs throughout the factory and stood looking at a distance in the middle of the street with the detonator in his hands.

But now the scene changes to a man with a book sitting on a bench, he looks up from the pages and begins to stand up. He takes from the bench a sack that at one time had contained bread crumbs that he had been feeding the fat waddling pigeon creatures. The man walked away from the bench and said to himself “I hate stories that leave you hanging”.
