Hi
For a class project, I'm trying to compile a list of well-recognized, influential American short stories that deal with gender (either as a man or woman or in between). I'd like for it to span from the 20th century to present.

I've found a couple women authors dealing with gender: kate chopin, gertrude stein, tillie olsen. I'm seeking more short stories that have had a great impact.

For men, I've only found Allan Gurganus who deals with gender/masculinity. Of course i know there is much more out there, which is why I hope that you smart cookies can help! Thanks.:yawnb:

Those are good. Try Willa Cather, Sarah Orne Jewett, Carsone McCullers, Joyce Carol Oats, Flannary O'Connor, and Eudora Welty. I'm sure there's more. But I think that's a lot.

If you are willing to go beyond traditional "classics" I would definitely try some Sci-fi and fantasy. There is a whole sub-genre of Feminist Science fiction. But two stories that instantly come to mind is "When it All Changed" by Joanna Russ and Women of Our Occupation (http://http://www.strangehorizons.com/2006/20060731/women-f.shtml) by Kameron Hurley

Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wall-Paper" falls a early (1892); but it's definitely worth checking out if you haven't read it.
