I'm trying to remember the titles of two books that I read while in junior high more than 10 years ago. I'm hoping that you guys can help me.
The first book is set in the American South during the World War II era. The main protagonists are a black family. The plot revolves around the family's trials and tribulations related to poverty and the racism that they encounter. One of the main subplots involves a family friend being accused of raping and murdering a white woman during a robbery.
The second book is not nearly as fresh in my memory. I only remember one very brief passage. There's two guys sitting in a bar/restaurant for travelers and drifters. The one guy orders a glass of tomato juice and a plate of scrambled eggs. He explains to the other guy that he doesn't eat for enjoyment, he only eats for sustenance. I'm pretty sure that this book was set in the Old West United States. There may have also been Native Americans and hunting in the book, but I can't remember for sure. Sorry that I can't remember more, but that passage always stuck out in my mind because the guy was so bleak and dreary in his outlook on life.
If anybody can help me out with the title of either book I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
