Alright, so my paper topic is about how Winston is a "flaw in the pattern" in the point of view of the party. The simple answer is obvious, but I really need help fleshing out my answers.

My two main points are that Winston believes that the party cannot control the past,

and that he believes that they cannot control common logic.

(evidence to support my claim must be taken from the first torture session with O'Brien)

For my first point, I'm going to be using the part about "the" picture, and Winston talking to O'Brien about who he thinks Oceania is at war with, along with their conversation about the nature of the past.

For my second point, I'm going to be focusing mainly on "2+2=5".

-----------------------

Basically, I have all my evidence and answers, but if anyone could help me with the explanation of how all this makes Winston a "flaw in the pattern," that would be much appreciated.

You could probably sum it up with my sig line about orthodoxy.

To be a Party member, one needs to practice orthodoxy all the time. Winston, unable to do so, becomes an anomaly.

Depending on what the paper is for tho, I might want to stay away from an 'Orthodoxy' argument.

This would depend on the Teacher of course, but I've known a few college professors who live and die by Orthodox Academia.

That's a long way from political orthodoxy though.

In fact, academic orthodoxy usually prescribes political unorthodoxy.

In the context of 1984, I doubt they'd get confused.

Winston is a flaw in the pattern to the party and big brother because he dosent fall in line like they want him to essentially. He developes independent thought and as we guess, he is a threat to the party, but in reality he isnt. like it said in the book, the party had been tracking him for roughly 7 years. why not just kill him when they realize that he has rebellious thoughts? because as winston strengthens his resolve, it makes it much more effective when his spirit is broken later on in the book. It is however Winstons love in julia that makes him different from others. even though he DID betray julia, in his own mind he didnt, signifying that he still had hope.

Have you finished the book? It is the very knowledge that he did betray Julia - as he admits to her - that destroys his character.
