Robert Olen Butler is a master of first-person narrative. In his most recent book, Had a Good Time: Stories from American Postcards, this talent is very evident. The author has, for a long time, collected picture postcards from the early 20th Century, not so much for the pictures, but rather for the short messages on the back. He has chosen 15 of these for this collection and written a fictional short story for each. Each story emphasizes his wit and his ability to delve into human relationships.
This is a perfect book to put on the bedstand, or wherever, for a quick read before falling asleep or for waiting for the last few minutes of time before the stew is ready for the addition of the potatoes.
