Story title search

I am going crazy trying to figure out who wrote a short story and the title. It's about a safe cracker that decides to retire and so moves into a small town where no one knows him and while he is there, a little girl is trapped inside a safe: He has to make a decision whether to open the safe and be discovered, or not and stay obscure. This may not be the exact plot, but it is very similar. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks, Shawn. [email protected]

It sounds like an O.Henry story that I read a long time ago, but I can't recall the title.

Correct, O. Henry wrote the story; it's title is A Retrieved Reformation, and later made into a play called Alias Jimmy Valentine.
