I must admit I find most metal music either ridiculous or too scary, but I do like the Finnish band Children of Bodom (only know their album Hatebreeder, though). I grew up in the 80's, and that was the true begining of Heavy Metal. There is a lot of Metal in the 70's rock of Ted Nugent. Anything off of Double Live Gonzo's. Especially listen to Paralysed and Stranglehold. They are slower than metal but roots metal for sure.
I loved the Scorpions, AC/DC, Mettalica, Ronnie James Dio, Anthrax to name a few. I really don't listen to much of it anymore though, and today's metal is so diverse that its hard to get into it for me, but I'm older now. Oh and btw Jethro Tull is not Metal!

I listen to metal vicariously . . . ;) there wasn't an option for that so I just chose "don't care" because that was the closest I could get.
My roommate listens to metal - all kinds including those kinds of Scandinavian groups. Sometimes he listens to it loud, and I actually enjoy hearing it. It's kind of interesting, and kind of scary. It doesn't bother me to hear it coming from his room, but I probably wouldn't seek it out on my own.

Children of Bodom is quite good. Alexi is an amazing guitarist. I like a lot of metal though. What comes to mind as my favorite "metal" band is As I Lay Dying. Though, I may have gotten the genre wrong on them. I believe they're death metal though.

I like all kinds of metal (not every band that comes in my way, but i appreciate a couple of bands from every genre). The differences between genres of metal are not that difficult to grasp ;) , but there are some metal bands that need a more lengthy description for the music they play than merely categorising them in a genre ("Theatre of tragedy" for instance :D ).
My favourite band is, perhaps, Paradise Lost, since i listen to them since i was 12 or something, my fav song.....i'll pass this question..difficult one to answer.
As for the belief system each band follows, well, i don't really care (nor do i want to find out ;) . There are some who claim to be satanists but i think that they mainly do this to sell more records).

Sweden has a lot of good metal/hardrock bands as well. We don't only have Abba and new indiepop, actually. I come from Gothenburg, and this is said about metal in Gothenburg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothenburg#Music): "The city is also noted for being the centre of the melodic death metal movement (sometimes even called "The Gothenburg sound"). Gothenburg metal is unique and distinct because of its mixture of brutality and aggression with very melodic and sometimes progressive guitar riffs and solos. Often, keyboards and clean singing are incorporated (instead of just using the traditional death grunt vocals). Gothenburg's own At the Gates, In Flames, and Dark Tranquillity are credited with pioneering this melodic style. The Gothenburg metal has influenced numerous significant metal scenes across Europe and the rest of the world, including Finland, the United States, and Canada." :thumbs_up

I guess I like Metal. I like music that is about sounding good and not about looking good, if you know what I mean. I like Motorhead and Metallica for starters. I guess I like some metal, and then rock and I am old school, so most of the stuff I like is from the 70's 80's and 90's and that includes hairbands, grunge bands and since the seventies was before my time I will just call it classic rock.
But other bands I like include: Megadeath, Guns N Roses, Motley Crue, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.

Well, when the scandal came out with the Grammy, (and yes it was a scandal), the album that Jethro Tull made was artistically good, but didn't sound anything like the sound that was out there that was "Metal". Here some incredible people pushed hard for Metal musicians to be honored, and then they gave the Grammy to Jethro Tull as a sort of, "OK, we'll let you have your Grammy, but we are still going to nominate whomsoever we chose." So Granny your comment has merit but it doesn't fly in the context I reference it. I still say, "Jethro Tull is not Metal"
PS the new Grammy this year is for Cajun/Zydeco band or album. All of Louisiana is abuzz over it. I know that if they give the album to band that doesn't play to these fans, that the load will hit the fan metaphorically and actually.(I hate it when people misuse the word 'literally'.)

The best album Jethro Tull made was Aqualung, it's a brilliant album, and it's the closest to metal they ever got. 1971 if I'm not mistaken.
OBVIOUSLY Metallica should have won over Jethro Tull, '...And Justice For All' Is a great album, but it still pales in comparison with 'Seventh Son of a Seventh Son' by IRON MAIDEN!

Deep Purple, yes, a band of great highs and equally terrible lows. In Rock, Machine Head, Fireball, the live album Made In Japan Those are the highs!
And Rapture of the Deep, their latest, it's quite good too, but there are also a few duds in their discography, very terrible duds.
Judas Priest? Did anyone mention Judas Priest yet? If nobody did, I'd like to mention that Judas Priest is quite the metal band.

I love Dir en grey right now, and a lot of other Japanese bands of all kinds.

Don't confuse goth with metal. There is a large difference. Goth is based on Post Punk Rock and have little relation to the sound of Metal. I did a research paper on Goth Rock and the subculture.
Black Metal is a pretty heavy sound in Metal and also the most controversial. Some members are claimed to be actual Nazis or use the term to describe some of what they believe in. Many are Atheist or Satanist who have committed varies crimes but of course not all black metal artist are insane or cause trouble. I know a few good bands who don't.
Another thing is Metal gets confused with Hardcore, Metalcore and Nu Metal. Even if Metal is in the term, does not directly make them metal. In fact most bands who are categorized as metal are more Hard Rock or combine Hardcore music with Hard Rock. It confused people with the different sounds and what defines metal sound vs what people think is metal. Also anything with "core" is not metal. -_- Nu means No metal and it was a direct attack on bands being claimed metal when they were not. Sad to say no one got the joke.
Anyway I listen to a good deal of metal such as Classic Metal bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest to Symphony X and Blind Guardian. I love Immortal, Nile, Burzum, Behemoth, Manowar, Nagalfar, Fairyland, Epiclore, Hammerfall, Kamelot, Type O Negative and the list can go on forever.
I seen Blind Guardian, Type O and Symphony X in concerts and that was amazing.

thanks TheDakrHunter. you see, I listened to some death metal songs the other day (Dimmu Borgir) and I really liked them. But I read some metal bands or fans are Nazis and I don't like Nazis, so I'm not sure how to feel about this. I don't really see why atheism or even satanism should be directly linked with nazi-ism, but apparently some of those bands think so :(

How to make your very own black metal band (http://www.zone.ee/blackmetal/eng/main_eng.htm)
You must sing like a cat being raped, because that is the only vocal style accepted in black metal circles. While singing in English is relatively ok, it is somewhat prone to sell-outism. There are three languages that are superior to others, and it would be best if you sang in one of these languages, which are Norwegian, Latin and Orkish. It is even better if neither the singer nor the author of the lyrics actually knows the language.
Almost all of our friends listen to metal. So we feel kind of funny when saying that metal isn't the next best thing since sliced corpses.
It isn't as we dislike it but we aren't much of a fan.
Of course, there are some metal bands we like, but eh, our preferences are different.

that quote is hilarious, Tal
well, the reason I came across black metal in the first place is that I was looking for Norwegian music. I learned a bit of Norwegian once and would like to take it up again. hey, that's great, I could manage to sing something along the lines of "I'd like a piece of cheese-cake, lead-free petrol 98 octanes, I stayed home because I was sick" in a mix of Swedish and Norwegian. if I do it in a death grunt it will sound great :D

Well most claim to be Satanist and Atheist but then again not all Satanist or Atheist are evil. lol... I didn't mean to make it sound in such fashion. Black Metal is a very complex and funny genre of music. I suggest looking into Immortal. I don't think they are into the Nazi ideology. You also have to remember is that were most Black Metal artist come from they didn't truly experience Nazi threat. Some of them claim it but then latter apologize for using the term. In other words some of them are ignorant towards some of what did happen during World War Two. A lot of them are not nazis but more Vikings with Satanic beliefs. Many of them have burned down a few churches in there hay day. It is kind of interesting how the genre was first a joke by the band Venom to becoming something a little bit more sinister.

And i say that they claim to be all those things in order to sell more records ;) It seems that many young people are frustrated and seem to like all kind of weird and kinky stuff and some bands have those said teenagers as a target group ;) The only group i can think of that actually did some very nasty stuff is Mayhem (not the entire band, just the singer who is in jail if i am not mistaken). Varg Vikenson (sp?) and he was I believe the guitarist or bass player (I forget which one). He actually killed his fellow band mate with a knife in the head. In fact he still makes music as Burzum and I believe Mayhem rekindled some kind of relationship with him.
Black Metal was suppose to be taken as a laugh rather than some actually Satanic worship. Venom was the starter and they are a funny bunch of guys. The music in itself is good and can be produced well. A lot of great bands came from the genre but a lot of horrible bands did as well. Personally speaking many of them are actually good guys, just with bad reps.

I LOVE metal... but not all genres...
:P I could start talking about this topic and never end!! Oh well, I'll point out some main ideas of my own. First of all, I've always found it extremely hard to explain metal and it's subgenres to people who are not into it... It's complicated. The importance you give to subgenres also depends on how much of an elitist you are, or think you are. Elitists drive me mad, although I must confess that I sometimes get carried away and act a little elitist myself. I dislike nu-metal, hardcore, and every other -core thing, I dislike goth... etc. I don't mind when other people listen to it (people are free to listen to what they like) but I hate it when people go on about how extremely "death metal" they are when only listening to nu-metal, for example. I also HATE being called "goth" or "heavy" just for always wearing jeans and a black shirt. There is a huge difference between sub-genres :P
Anyway, me myself, I tend to listen mostly to death, black, avant-garde, progressive black metal... although I like a bit of most genres.
Indeed, there are many bands considered "National Socialist Black Metal", or NSBM, who are nazis. You can find lots of people who listen to black metal and consider themselves nazis (this doesn't mean all black metal is nazi at all). Anyway, "idiots and not real nazis", all nazis are idiots in my opinion ;) I know a few "attempted nazis" who are quite pathetic but anyway...
Children of Bodom, some people consider it melodic death metal, others "extreme power metal"... really, it's quite hard to define bands but that's what I've read on them. I used to be a fan but I'm not so much anymore :P
Anyway, those are just some thoughts that came to my mind on the topic... although they may be a bit unorganized.... sorry
(By the way, according to some silly statistics (which I don't believe in, they're never accurate, but sometimes helpful) published a while ago people who listen to metal tend to be more intelligent... haha! I just found that funny ^^)

Well, if you were trying to get into metal, I'd recommend (since you like Children of Bodom I'll recommend "softer" stuff, and mostly from the finnish scene like them):
- Norther - close friends of COB apparently, I find that they're very similar
- Ensiferum - More "folkish". They now have the singer of Norther, although they were better with Jari!! :P which is now in Wintersun
- Wintersun - Who doesn't like Wintersun?!?!?!?! They're beautiful...
- Sonata Arctica - I find that most people, whether they're into metal or not, appreciate Sonata Arctica, although I find them slightly "cheesy"
- Dark Moor: Beyond the Sea - That album's great, if you liked Sonata Arctica and chessy symphonic power metal (or whatever it is) of the sort...
Ah well... I think I'm getting a bit too far from COB, but those are some bands I find that people who listen to little metal seem to like.
I am not really into metal but I like some - mostly scattered songs rather than really loving a band. I don't really like the aaaarghwaaaaargh kind of thing... maybe what I like is closer to goth but I'm not sure what proper goth is... I like the band Lacuna Coil for example, I like Paradise Lost especially in their 'lighter', more electronic albums, I like some Metallica but can't say I know that much about them... can't think of much more right now

thanks Nocturna, but they are more than slightly cheesy
I'll check out the other bands in a minute...

much better :) I think I like the "aaaaaaaaaaaargh waaaaaaaaaaaaargh grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooowl" variety much better than the more mainstreamy stuff.
at the moment my faves are still Children of Bodom and Vredesbyrd by Dimmu Borgir.

my hubby and me want to start a metal band (*joking*). our death grunt is quite good already. we practice it every time we hit our foot on the door or need to rush to the loo :D
I've also practiced the singing like a cat that's being raped thingy it talked about in the link that Tal posted.
now all we need to do is learn Norwegian. I can speak it a little, but I doubt that "Hi, do you speak Norwegian" (in Norwegian of course) or "The fur of the Sloth has moths living in it" will make for good metal lyrics :(
plus, I need to learn to play the electric guitar (and buy one in the first place)
and my hubby needs to learn to play the drums. This could prove a bit difficult seeing as his arms always move in sync and do everything together. we'll never get them to beat different drums at the same time... he'll just have to grow like 10 more arms, so he'll have 6 pairs of arms and it doesn't matter if they do everything in pairs.
we also need to make up our mind about whether we want to be a black metal or unblack metal band. or maybe a grey one? we could invent a new genre: grey, sitting on the fence, witch+hubby metal :D
if we do decide for the unblack variety, I could just sing out the Our Father in Old English from my textbooks. that would make things so much easier, because this way we don't need to write our own lyrics :D
as for our bandname, we've had a couple of ideas. tell me how you like them?
smertefull pelsen til dovendyret ("the painful fur of the sloth" in Norwegian, not sure I got the grammar right, but who cares... we can always add a few aaaarghs and claim it's Old Norse :D)
Hundens anatomi (anatomy of the dog) :thumbs_up
Sataniske ritualer (Satanist rituals)
the evil Belgian women who slept their way up to the top
edit: an unblack bandname: Forsamlingen av erkeengler (Assembly(?)/Council(?)/Gathering(?) of the Archangels)
watch out for our first CD! It will be released in 20 years :)

LOL Sleepy!
The whole thing is hilarious. And especially this - now I have an image of a Hindu-god like guy playing drums. His arms always move together? Actually, I think my boyfriend has the same thing, seriously . . .

yep, seriously. e.g. when he rolls over in bed to switch off the light, both his arms reach for the switch, although he only needs one hand to switch it off. he even did this as a kid. there's a pic of him where he's going in a roundabout and one of his index fingers pokes the windshield and the index finger of his other hand pokes the air outside the car :D

I've got another question:
why does the singer of Dimmu Borgir shout "San Antonio" in every other song?
Is it the name of the place where they gave the concert? or is there a Satanist "saint" called Antonio? or is it a code for something? like the Nazi S.A. .. or maybe Satan's anus? :goof:
been listening to some stuff from my hubbys collection lately.
I really like "One" by Metallica and "Angry Again" by Megadeth, as well as the album "Best of the Beast" by Iron Maiden :thumbs_up

hubby's an my plans to start a metal band are beginning to materialize ;)
after I've handed in my thesis, we'll record our first song :) I've got some ideas for the lyrics. i'll be the singer (after a bottle of schnaps) and hubby will play the pots and pans. we're a bit short of guitars, keyboards and the like, but I'm sure we'll find a solution for this minor problem :D

my, I'm such a dumbass. I've been listening to Iron Maiden nearly 24/7 for a couple of months now and it only dawned on me a couple of minutes ago that they are BRITISH! I never really thought about it, but a minute ago it struck me "hey, he says 'feah of the dahk' without rs" ... I don't know what made me think they were American

I heard once a professor of music history say in the radio: Someone who likes Johann Sebastian Bach as well as Richard Wagner must be insane.
Well, I like Johann Sebastian Bach as well as Metallica, so I must be totally mad ... :D

(By the way, according to some silly statistics (which I don't believe in, they're never accurate, but sometimes helpful) published a while ago people who listen to metal tend to be more intelligent... haha! I just found that funny ^^)
I wouldn't in the least bit be surprised to find that to be true. In fact, without needing any studies to back it up, I'm fairly confident that it is true. Metal is very often based on deep histroical, literary and philosophical themes. Metal musicians often write music that is well thought out and complex. 90% of the US (can't really speak to the rest of the world, I don;t know what it's like in other countries) listens to music on Top 40 radio that is formulaic and homogenized. Nothing but catchy hooks with no substance. Though it has certainly gained more acceptanc, much of the country still views metal as mindless music and the reason for that is that they believe the Tipper Gores and the Jerry Falwells of the world who take the bands that are kind've Cro Magnon, so to speak (such as Motley Crue or Motorhead, though I do like those guys), and say "See, look how dumb these guys are!" and even the intelligent stuff that they do talk about, they totally misinterpret because they latch on to certain key words and phrases and hear what they want to hear. I'll give you an example. One day, we were having a little get together at my uncle's. Now, my mother isn't an religious extremist, but she certainley buys the whole "heavy metal musicians worship the devil and kill people" bit. I'm listening to "In the Presence of Enemies" by Dream Theater. The song is written as a narrative baused on Faustian legend. So when the narrator sings, "Dark Master my guide, now my soul is yours," it's, "see! They worship the devil!" She latches on to a phrase without bothering to understand the context. She never really kept me from listening to heavy metal as a kid, but she still gives me a hard time about it as an adult. That's what much of the population does because Tipper Gore told them to. But I know for a fact that I am smarter than I would be if I didn't listen to heavy metal. I could cite numerous examples of literature and philosophy that heavy metal exposed me to that I would never have known of otherwise, and of course, once you enter that realm, it if self feeding and it just snowballs. Heavy metal is one of the most intellegent genres out there, and I will challenge ANYONE who says otherwise.

The literary references in metal are quite impressive and extensive. I had no idea until I started listening to more metal recently. It always sounded like a lot of screaming to me before, and now I'm like "oh, look, they are screaming about literature and myth!" ;)

wtf, you worthless c*nts? ;) (sorry, trying to use metal-speak)
why didn't anyone tell me about Samael?
their sound is awesome, BUT some of their lyrics do make me wonder..
Solar Soul (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzoqAf6xWMY&feature=related)
One nation - generation
Connecting people in a collective mind
Emergence - Renaissance
The world is in your hands don’t let it slip away
wtf? if this isn't a bit nazi like then I don't know what is. solar as in the svastika as a symbol of the sun??? I hope that's not what they mean.

Telepath (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpClxEePxtw)
edit: this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMzWysnhr5c) sounds decidedly pro-diversity, on the other hand
Lyrics to Slavocracy by Samael:
Why so many would have to pay for just one man to stand his way
why so often no one denies primacy of one over others
is there not enough self-consciousness in everyone to make him real
haven't we all inside of us what makes a man worth being one
How I wish that I could take you by the hand
lead you through blurry views and
give you access to your own self
Between a Caesar and nothing there are plenty of ways to be
life is full of differences and so should be society
Hope is a fuel we get for free while fear demands security
so why are those two always used as if they were power tools
How I wish that I could take you by the hand
lead you through blurry views and
give you access to your own self
Sleeping with eyes wide open while someone else is getting in charge
to lead the way in his own way
How I wish that I could take you by the hand
lead you through blurry views and
give you access to your own self
I wish that I could take you by the hand
lead you through blurry views and
give you access to your own self

No, but I have some friends who are total metal heads.
Metal is alright, it's pretty interesting sometimes.
There is this one metal band that amuses me because they're so awful, though, and they know it. Green Jelly. Haw haw haw. "YOU! DOWN ON YOUR KNEES!!!! I SAID GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES!!!"

i do listen to metal , but not all kinds .. i adore Anathema, some of metallica`s songs.
Nightwish is good too, and many many bands .. In my country listening to "metal" is an awesome thing, so you see teenagers hanging around wearing all black, and the most important thing is the "serious attitude" which is absolutely faked !! and that makes me laugh !! REAL HARD :D

do you like metal music?
I must admit I find most metal music either ridiculous or too scary, but I do like the Finnish band Children of Bodom (only know their album Hatebreeder, though). I'll never get the differences between all those different subgenres of metal, nor will I ever understand the diff. between goths and a... metal people (what are they called? metal head?)
what's your fave metal band or song?
are some metal fans and/or goths Nazis?:eek2: some of them seem a bit fishy, but maybe they're just idiots not real Nazis?
Black Widow by Children of Bodom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74fnd5qIOVw)
(not my fave song by them, will post more later)
edit: Children of Bodom by Children of Bodom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfAx67E809A)
Yes I do.
I am like you, I do not fully understand the genres but I can differentiate after the experience.
It`s not as obligatory for Goths to listen to Metal as it is for Metal-heads (well, that`s what they`re called after, lol)
Yes, I admit some metal melodies are scary, the voices/screams, but some others are just romantic.
About being Nazi, I am not Nazi and I do listen to Metal. It`s just this easy, not all Nazis listen to Metal music as long as nothing is definite in life.
Lately I`ve been so much into Gothic bands from the 80s like The Mission, Siouxsie & the Banshees...
My favorite bands are actually Evanescence and Otep [that`s what I can remember now, i`m not functioning well]
I listen to other than Metal, but it`s just my favorite.
And lol, about the metal-speak, I don`t use it :D.. I mean this is why I hate being called a metalhead since I don`t like to be considered one after seeing how it`s being damaged lately, and especially in my country.
