The Ride Through Wicked Woods

Fingers squeezed around my soul
As Fear increased his grip.
For darkness crept across the sky
Amidst my homeward trip.

I upon my trusty steed,
I sped along the trail.
With aim to win the race with night
I tried to no avail.

Youth and love were both to blame
For why this came to be.
My girl and I had rendezvoused
Beneath a maple tree.

Long we stayed in loves' embrace -
At dusk we parted ways.
I heard the sun let out a yawn
And dim her autumn rays.

So along a blackened road
I rode without a light.
And through the haunted woods ahead
I had to pass in fright.

Witches, ghosts and other ghouls
Were said to roam its path.
I would've went the long way home
But feared my fathers wrath.

Down the dismal lane of death
We sneaked in silent stride.
And deep within the dark I felt
The sense of being eyed.

Then we heard a wicked laugh,
My horse screamed out a neigh.
I dropped the reins and let him run.
We somehow got away.

Once at home I told my dad
Of what I'd just survived.
He whipped me good for being late
and called my tale contrived.

But I am sure of what I heard
I know my tale is true.
Believe in ghosts and scary things,
My story could happen to you.
