Ale is a light beer, made so that it can be kept for some considerable time, initially for export from England to the colonial officers in India. it was mae with malted barley, hops and top-fermenting yeast. darker ales such as brown ale were made with darker barley. It makes PAM, PAPAM, PAPAPAM and PAPAPAPAM laugh a lot and fall over. it also makes it impossilbe to remember how may P there were/are AM.
