I don't know if I should post this on the fantasy forum or not (I don't even know where that is!) but I wonder: What do you think about vampire/werewolf literature. It's really popular right now to write about vampires/werewolves. Do you have any preferences? Suggestions? Post regarding new vampire books? book reviews?
Go Ahead.
(I love Vampires/werewolves this is why I ask. This thread will probably die)

The Were Wolf by Clemence Housman is probably the best short story of a werewolf ever written. Tyhe ending is unforgettable and leaves an emotional impact that is hard to forget.

I was gonna say - i don't know that I've read much werewolf literature. It's all vampires. I personally think it's because vampires are more interesting than werewolves and it's easier to write about the experience of being a vampire. With werewolves, the character turns into an animal and can't control his/her actions as much, but vampires are able to retain their ability to think and articulate and they can put the experience into words. With werewolves, you're limited to writing about the werewolves turmoil when it's not a full moon. Dunno.
If someone came up and told that I could be one or the other, I would choose to be a vampire. And I think most people would and that's why there are more vampire stories and movies than there are werewolf stories and movies. so Vampires rule.

I like both thought. Being a werewolf just sounds so interesting and THERE'S A lot of things to write, Shalot. Apart from turmoil, like interpersonal relationships or dealing with society and such (Like Jacob Black in The twilight series!) I can't choose!

Humm actually Baki you arer right they are very popular right now. Let me see Mary Janice Davidson's Undead series is massive at the library right now. But truthffully I only read 2 or 3 of them I got boooooored. But Im thinking if it gets into any higher demand we ( the staff) will end up having another 'blackmarket' series.
Kelly Armstrong's series was werewolves to begin with and I Loved that series although again I stopped reading ( I thought the series had ended and just recently found out that they hadnt). Again quite popular among the customers.
Oh The kitty Norville series by Carrie Vaghun ( I think it is ) read those a couple of months ago and they were fun.
The only really annoying thing I find with Vamp/were books is the strange need the authours seem to have for having great big long sex scenes. Its rather off putting for me at least. bUt hey jump those bits and you can get through 4 books a day easy

I am a vampire lover too. But it is frustrating how hard actually is to find some good vampire books in my country, so I am limited with the Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles and the classics.

I kind of like vampire and werewolf stories. Unfortunately, too many of the stories concentrate on the horrific parts, and too few deal with the philosophical aspects of those conditions. Someday I will get around to writing the true stories of vampires and werewolves.

Well, who else is going to fight the evil vampire or evil werewolf? Besides, it sounds natural to make them so. In some books they're even friends thought.

And of course, you'll tell us first!
I'm actually writing a vampire book on the side, I just got to involved in the Fairy book. Figures.
I've read books that don't really concentrate in these parts thought but in the poor, cursed life of the vampire.

It's really creepy. Sends chills down my spine. But i think the image of the vampyr as a predator is a bit overplayed :D You would have to give it a new angle.

They aren't enemies. Some writers have made them such to make a story, but they interact with each other as they would with humans.

Yes, there are some books that make them friends, but they usually deal with each other as they deal with humans.

I'm with almost everyone else here. I love vampire and werewolf fiction. It is sort of like horror movies for me. Even if the book shows no promise of being good, I have to pick it up and read it. Peter, if you get around to writing a good vampire or werewolf novel, let me know. I'll be in line to pick it up. I'm always on the lookout for new books. I think I'll be adding some of the books reccommended here to my reading list.

I devoured them when I was much younger. Try the trilogy that includes the title The Beginning. I think it is listed as the Fear Street Saga. It was always my favorite.

I really enjoyed the first three books in the Vampire Chronicals by Anne Rice: Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat and especially The Queen of the Damned. She really handled our spiritual dilemma well in all three.

I ve read a little about this subject.Only Brams Stoker s Dracula and I love the sweet vampires from Bradburys tales...(Timoty, the little vampire)I dont really enjoyed Interview to a Vampire...
I loved the Roman Polansky Dance with Vampires and the Gary Oldman Draculla get humorous after the caricature movie...(dont remember the famous director)
I really enjoy reading researching literature from this subject and recomend a Book who follow the vampire myths origins to the Medieval times when epidemics caused lots of early deads and sometimes people were buried alive or have some anemic appearence that reminds to a vampire. The common people were terrified cause they found this half dead person complaining on the crave and trying to raise up and they Do Really finish the job by force!!!
it is a mixed of Myth Unconscient fears and ignorance.
Of course people whos anemic can be sensitive to light and have no much energy and prefer to move by night...it doesnt mean they are vampires.:bawling:

I like them for this too. I am reading the Anita Blake series, but they can't be compared at all. My favorite is "The Tale of the Body Thief", though I think that after the forth they become worse and worse. Not that I don't klike them, but the first were better, somehow richer.

I like this one too. it's very beautifully written and it's really intriguing and convincing. It's interesting how it presents Dracula, although it is a monster in the Stoker's book too, here this idea is defiantly stronger, he is almost 100% inhuman.

Yeah, the Anika Blake series started to spiral downwards as soon as the author indroduced the ardeur and began to write about sex. Now is mostly like some kind of porn-y fanfic of a book.
Lestat on the other hand, is awesome. I just got my hands on Mennoch the Devil and was amazed by the portrayal of heav'n and hell.

But no don't read at all about these stories...prefer stories with ideas that challenge you...

Has anyone ANY opinion on Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's St. Germain series? I found it a little heavy handed and long on description but I've gotten lazy over the years. Read all of Hotel Transylvania and started the one (can't remember the tilte) that goes back in time to Rome. I don't think I gave her a fair chance--but what little Rice I've read I consider Yarbro the better writer. (But I tend to be stuck up about that sort of thing too.)

i love the vampire and werewolf genre, though i cant find that many werewolf novels. i find that vampires and werewolve must be portrayed as pedators, because that is what they are. vampires hunt for the blood of humans (or animals in some cases) and are (in my opinion) the ultimate predator, leaving other animals to steer clear from them. werewolves are predators too, and in real life, you dont really see predators hanging out with each other. humans can stay clear of werwolves b/c they look like wolves and wolves ar often potayed as evil animals thatll kill human just for breathing. vammpires, on the other hand, look like humans, except for slight changes in appearance, which means that humans are more careless around them, becoming easy prey.
i would love to read more werewolf novels though, so if anyone has any suggestions for books, glad to hear them.

Vampires, in my opinion from what I read, are beautiful and intelligent creatures. Some are cursed with evil, while other vampires use their powers to help man. These so called vampires are vicious beyond belief. Blessed with grand, massive powers. In so many books I've read are good vs. evil. Usually the monsters die and the heroes win. But, from my favorite quote I see tragedy..... "Immediatly after the monsters, die the heroes" -Roberto Calasso
Even though some stories end happy, the others that follow this quote are more exciting. More of a exciting tragedy. Some readers might hate the "good guys" dying in the end along with the monsters. But, as i see it, the sacrificial meaning is so much more. Even though the winner loses, there is still so much hope for the living world. Hope for evil defeated. Hope for remembrance.
Werewolves on the other hand are just so grotesque to me. Even though im an atheist, i feel as if Vampires are the Gods and Werewolves are the devil (despite the good vs. evil). But im also proved wrong in the Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer. Both Werewolves and Vampires can be good and evil.
And still, Vampires win me over.
I absolutly love Vampires and Werewolf stories.
suggestion.. read... the vampire diaries: series by L.J. smith.
