Just across the switchback laid a place
of no return.
Well that’s what the older boys told
our gang of 5.
“Indians live on the other side, and they
boil young kids for supper.”
We’d laugh it off, we knew it wasn’t true,
or, was it!.
The day finally came, we got our nerve
to crawl on hands and knees.
If we were quiet, sneaky, and didn’t cry,
then we would know for sure.
The sandy soil was cool and moist as we
made our way through weeds.
Ever so often we would stop and rest
To see if WE were still WE.
Closer now, hearts beating, sweat pouring
thinking we might be dinner.
I myself and I am sure the others heard
drumbeats in our ears.
I don’t remember who parted the grass
it could have been Maxie or Rick.
I just know it wasn’t me who wanted to lead
cause leaders got eaten first.
Well, obviously this ended better than we
thought, no boy on a hot buffet.
But I still remember a quote from the 5
“hey little boy, “indians live on the……”
of no return.
