I don't understand it either.. I think it is something like, taking one point from the book you don't like, and add it to the one you do... But I still this is going to go on forever because alot of people love these three books (I've seen a point going back and forth between Paradise and Innocents...)

Oh no, our Milton/Twain struggle has Virg. pulling out the smiley hitting a brick wall! :lol: It looks more complicated than it is. You decide which of the books you like best and which you like least. Then you take a point from the one you like least and give it to the one you like best. You put a little [-] next to the one the point is taken away from and a [+] next to the one you've added the point to so it's easier to keep track of what's going on.

When all the points have been taken away from a book then it is taken off the list. The book that finally ends up with all 100 points wins (yes, this might well take awhile!)

And so it goes... Actually, we ended the last one when we got down to two books, as there was a glitch in the rules which still needs mending that would allow for what I would consider unfair voting practice, and I didn't push the advantage last time except to demonstrate how I could have. With the way things are going, and none willing to vote Doyle off, we may have to go 1st, 2nd, 3rd on this one...Clearly Milton should win..., even if Twain had the seven points from Doyle, it would be advantage, Milton. I think it safe to say Twain has 2nd locked up pretty tight. We now have pretty much one point going back and forth.

That's a very strict rule, Whifflingpin, but I will stick to it if everybody else does.I agree that it's too strict to only allow one vote a day. I think it's probably "bad form" only if someone votes twice in a row. Given that there aren't any consequences of winning or losing, I don't really see a big need to prevent "cheating". If someone wants a particular novel to "win" so bad as to post many times in a row, that's fine with me.

As for the rules made, I thought it was a rule that you weren't allowed to vote twice in a row. I'll agree with Blue that we should just make it a rule by consensus that you're not allowed to post multiple times in a row. Everyone agree? Glitch fixed. :)

:lol: Ha! Academic superpowers to the rescue as predicted. I put LOTR on because it was intended by Tolkien to be a single volume work (and I myself have a copy of it in its single volume form). The three books were meant to be divisions in the sense of the books in Epic and Romance (the way, say the Aeneid is made up of 12 books etc.). The editors published it as three volumes because it was clearly easier to carry around that way. As for the Canterbury Tales, I figured if Milton was admissible so was Chaucer. After all, it doesn't seem quite fair to exclude all those writers before the novel was invented. If anyone really strenuously objects to either of these I'm fine with changing. Just want everyone to have fun.

I think Tolkien wrote it as one book originally and it was the publisher who decided to divide it up 3 ways. So, if someone wants to vote for the Trilogy as one book, then they can because that is the way Tolkien intended it.

No further objections, your honors. After all, I put in Paradise Lost in the last list, not thinking about it not being a novel when it was written. Well, that would knock out a lot of good nowels, for many began as serials in magazines. An old pulp fiction expert like myself could shake you with a list of some, I am sure. Works by Doyle, Dickens, Hammlet, Burroughs, Howard, Lovecraft, and a host of others would have to be disqualified. If it's a novel now, it's fine. I agree, however, no voting twice in a row should be rule by general consent.

(At the risk of offending people, I must say I am surprised at the popularity of The Canterbury Tales. Yes, I have a nice hard bound edition which I have had for about 26 years, but I kept it knowing my children would be required to read it. I have translated pages for people here on litnet who cannot get their minds around the old English. Parts of it are indeed funny, but it's the wading through that language that gets to me, I guess.)

And for the record, LOTR was originally written as one volume and Tolkien's publisher made the decision to print it as three so it's inclusion is legit.
