We have had these five for a considerable time. I think it safe to say no one is going to vote any particular one out. At this moment, 4 are fairly close to 20%. The other is only 3 points off. Why not just close this, 5 at 20%. We're getting no where. Who wants to pick the next ten?

I've been thinking the same for a few days. Shall I pick the next list? May I?Two things shocked me about the last book race. I thought Lord of the Rings would be a shew in for first. I also that the Canterbury Tales would be first to go. I was wrong on both. I also thought Huck Finn might be viciously attacked. Nope. I didn't think David Copperfield would survive. He did. Pride and Prejudice was the one I was fairly sure would be in second place. They are all so tightly close to that 20% apiece. A Good top five. Books that had to fight to be there. Spreading across a large span of writing.
I nominate you, Barbara. Do we have a second?

Motion carried. Go Barbara. Give us a new list. The last stands at:
The Lord of the Rings ~ J.R.R. Tolkien ~ 22%
Pride and Prejudice ~ Jane Austen ~ 19%
David Copperfield ~ Charles Dickens ~ 20 %
The Canterbury Tales ~ Geoffrey Chaucer ~ 17 %
Huck Finn ~ Mark Twain ~ 22%
Very close to 20% apiece. I would call it that. Never in my life would I have expected such a result from such a spread of talent. Old to new, fantasy, reality, somewhat historical fiction. Wow! http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l108/AbsalomKane/read.gif

Right, here we go. Thanks for nominating me. I've tried to find authors from 10 different nations this time (French, English, German, Russian, Indian, South African, Italian, Swiss, Irish, Czech). I think you know most of them - each has been discussed on the Forum or is at least a great work of world literature. I listed them in no particular order.
1. The Plague, Albert Camus - 10
2. Middlemarch, George Eliot - 10
3. Buddenbrooks, Thomas Mann - 10
4. War and Peace, Leo N. Tolstoy - 10
5. The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy - 10
6. Disgrace, J.M. Coetzee - 10
7. The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco - 10
8. Homo Faber, Max Frisch - 10
9. Ulysses, James Joyce - 10
10. The Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka - 10
Hm, I see now that they're predominantly European. Never mind. Someone else may do the other continents later on. Hope you'll have fun. Barbara

Hi Barbara - I had to finish it as I studied it in school, many decades ago. In those days it was shockingly modern and to have read it and approved of it were the hallmarks of sophistication, cosmothingyianism and teenage revolt. It still beats the pants off Middlemarch (ahem)

That explains it. As a student I had to read Middlemarch and what with issues of emancipation and so on I was fascinated. That was in the 70s. I started reading The Plague two years ago - after reading Buddenbrooks for the fourth time. And Camus didn't have a chance against Thomas Mann. :)

Sorry. Been writing some long haunted poetry for my blog. Then too, I am shockingly stunned at your book choices. I tried Buddenbrooks, not my style.

Oh dear! Buddenbrooks is my all-time favourite. How tastes can differ. It seems that other people who voted in this thread don't like my choice, either. Actually, six of the above were novels I loved to read, the others I'd seen discussed on the forum.
But why don't you just vote for your favourite and take the points off one you're sure you don't like? You don't have to read them all.
