I read a beautifully written novel a few years ago which would make a good birthday present. Trouble is I can't remember the author or the title and nothing is coming up on searches. Maybe it rings a bell with someone here.

It's a translation from Portugese and the author is a lawyer by day. The story is set during the Roman period in Spain and describes a Governor, and the family trauma arising from the coming of Christianity. I think the title is a quote from Genesis, something about God walking/stepping in the cool of evening.

Hope someone has read it here and has a better memory tham me, I need to order it tomorrow.

Edit: just found it "A God Strolling in the Cool of the Evening"

Hey! I'm glad you found the book! I hadn't read it so I wouldn't have been able to help you, but it sounds like something I'd be interested in since it talks about Spain during the Roman time. So thank you for giving something new to read!! :)
