I read a beautifully written novel a few years ago which would make a good birthday present. Trouble is I can't remember the author or the title and nothing is coming up on searches. Maybe it rings a bell with someone here.
It's a translation from Portugese and the author is a lawyer by day. The story is set during the Roman period in Spain and describes a Governor, and the family trauma arising from the coming of Christianity. I think the title is a quote from Genesis, something about God walking/stepping in the cool of evening.
Hope someone has read it here and has a better memory tham me, I need to order it tomorrow.
Edit: just found it "A God Strolling in the Cool of the Evening"
