well ,i will tell you 5 marriages in P&P:
lizzy & darcy
jane & bingley
lydia & wickham
Mr. & Ms. bennet
charlotte lucas & mr collins
society thinks that marriage is a obligation, and a way to "grow up" in people's eyes. people's ,especially girl's, purpose is to catch the best match. so they see marriage as a way into the nobil world, not always related with love.

and it was the only security for a woman. Charlotte married Mr. Collins even though she couldn't stand him because she was a burden on her family. Lizzy turned down Mr. Darcy and the shock was not because she loved him or he was nice or handsome, but it was like turning down the lottery.

She finally married him for love though. What I found unusual for this genre was that her father was willing to not give his consent if she felt she had to marry him through duty.

That was unusual and lovely.

Mr. Bennet sparkles with wit and wisdom above everyone. I held my breath awaiting each reappearance.

Mr Bennet is the kind father of our heroine, who appreciates that life is more than wealth, status, class and frivolity. Years ago he married unwisely, keeps more or less to himself, reads a lot and has an excess of the dry ironic humour of middle-class men I knew, while working for a couple of years in England. An enchantingly funny novel.
