Perhaps...clue number 18?No, not #18, but Yes, Sherlock is there. I greatly scrambled the order of apperance so as not to leave clues by accident, and left none of the usual Holmes clues, or did I? It depends on how closely you follow the adventures of the Great Detective into his last bow, maybe?

14. Father Dowling played by the wonderful Tom Bosley! It was the tough that threw me! I always think of him as a loveable teddy bear! More popcorn???? :D

Eeep! I think this really shows my age! :)

I'm editing because it's been noted that Sherlock is indeed in the list I'm going to take a guess that he's the beekeeper. If I'm not mistaken I remember seeing him tending to bees in a movie once many years ago. He doesn't seem to fit any of the other categories. So -

5. Sherlock Holmes?

15. Philip Marlowe? This is just a wild guess. For some reason it just popped in my head, I think he may have had an office on that floor?

Don't throw popcorn at me if I'm wrong! :D

18. I can only think of Nancy Drew, and I doubt if she's popular enough to be THE Woman...In the world of fictional detectives, so far as I know, only one has been called "The Woman". And she was called that by a very famous detective she once got the best of in a situation. Maybe that will help. Her stories are a spin-off of another detective's stories, and she wasn't created by the person who writes her series. ;)

I rather like this game, so here's a few Shakespeare characters:

1. On the basis of his name, one could say that he's a quixotic (or quicksilvery) sort of guy.

2. Big on balcony-climbing, short on brains

3. By now, I suspect he's deathly afraid of newts, frogs, bats, dogs, and walking forests.

4. His subtitle sounds like he's a boggy area in Italy.

5. This fella probably sells his wares while walking across number 4.

William Hope Hodgson wrote Carnacki the Ghost Finder. Blackwood wrote about paranormal detective John Silence. My bad. I always use the excuse "I'm over 40." But that's no excuse when both books are on the shelf in the hall. And The Jersey Devil has been the bane of the Pine Barrens for some time. Going out on a limb here, I'm going to say Rasputain the Mad Monk.
Closer, but not exact.
You've got the right nationality, it is indeed a Russian character.

A lion, a mouse and a madman - three in one

We don't know if anyone can speak russian, but the stems are similar (think of a character, whose first name is the Russian variant of Leo and last name is lingusitically similar to english word "mouse")

Madman is an important hint too as the character had mental illness.
And actually "three in one" part is a hint too - it refers to someone, with whom the character has great likeness of.

Hopefully, giving you the initals of the stories will jar your memory just a little!

#11 The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether, one of Poe's rare satires.

#13 The Imp of the Perverse He said he was safe, if he was not stupid enough to tell on himself--so guess what he did?

#18 The Narrative of A. Gordon Pym of Nantucket, a novelette that proved prophetic, down to the name A. Gordon Pym.

#17 Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar, about the man hypnotized while dying to stave off death, with gruesome results.

#19 The Mystery of Marie Roget, Dauphin's encore, when a girl's body washes ashore.

#23 "Thou Art the Man", in which a detective plans a very nasty surprise for the guilty party.

That finishes the Poe trip. In Pace Requiescat!

Oh, yeah, a bit of triva: #18 turned out to be prophetic. It actually happened some years after the story was published to a group of people, one man named the same as Poe's title character....

OK, I shall ease your mind. Lex has a female bodygaurd named Mercy Graves. And Darkseid is aquainted with an evil woman oddly named Granny Goodness. So both are named something of which they have none! Voila! :D

Madman is an important hint too as the character had mental illness.

Think of his mayor novels.Raskolnikov, from Crime and Punishment by Fyodor M Dostoyevsky, well he was a madman anyway. I must confess that any attempt to translate English into Russian has resulted in an alphabet that I cannot read. But when I said "Rasputain" you said something that lead me to believe that the "Ras" part of the name might refer to a lion or a king. So when you mention the author starts with D, we get Dostoyevsky, and I confess again to not knowing exactly how to pronounce "Raskolnikov" so it might sound like mouse for all I know. Anyway, mon ami, after all, Crime and Punishment is the only novel by Dostoyevsky I have actually read (I gave up on the Brothers Karamasov, since I was only guessing at a lot of pronunciations, though to my ears, Karmasov sounds more like "mouse", but there are what, four brothers? So which one? I'd never make a good linguist... ;)

Raskolnikov, from Crime and Punishment by Fyodor M Dostoyevsky, well he was a madman anyway. I'd never make a good linguist... ;)

Well, it is a book by Dostoyevski, but neither Crime and Punishment nor Brothers Karamazov.
The character is the protagonist and the book is named after him, although not by his name but with a derogative term by which he was called.
Madman refers to the fact that he had been in a sanitarium.

To your puzzles:

9. "For, although common Snarks do no manner of harm,
Yet, I feel it my duty to say,
Some are Boojums--" The Bellman broke off in alarm,
For the Baker had fainted away.
11. Random, wasn't he? We remember that someone who wasn't the brightest nail in the nailbox became king but can't recall, who exactly.
4. We associate the word "fascinating" with Havelock Vetinari because it is such a common word in his vocabulary. "Long may you live and prosper", on the other hand, we have hard time imagining him saying it.

#9) Certainly. They even named sub-atomic particles snarks. Wonder if some of them are "Boojums".

#11) Random it was, to the surprise of all because as you say, he wasn't the brightest nail in the box.

#4) Alas, no. Both these phrases are this characters catchwords, first in TV, then movies, now in novels.

15. Faust??OK, mon ami...

#8) Indeed. Good think he was a mathematics wizard. How would you have liked to try to write that poem?

#15) Yes. Faust. But the Devil got him after all. And the moral of the story is, you cannot make a deal with the devil, he always stacks the deck.
