Uncle Robin Wants YOU for Sherwood Forest!

Well, at rachel's request, here's a thread for all who wish to join me in robbing the rich and giving to the poor. High commissions offered ;) ! Standard uniform: Lots...and LOTS...of Lincoln Green.

AimusSage
12-16-2005, 10:28 AM
Can I be the sherrif of nothingham? I want to hunt down all you robbers.

And if that position is not available I'll gladly take up the position of Catburgler- extraordinare. I can climb the walls of castles and open the doors, or maybe just steal some jewelry or generaly whatever the gives the highest commision. Ahum, and gives to the poor too ofcourse

Can I be Maude, the slightly plump barmaid who likes to let down her tresses much to the chagrin of her father, the cranky old barkeep?

RobinHood3000
12-16-2005, 05:12 PM
Welcome, welcome, one and all!! We have Friar PenTucken to attend to the spiritual needs of our brethren, AimusSage the Catburglar extraordinaire, Night the Lincoln Seamstress, and Riesa the Barmaid!!

Come on, who else??

Virgil
12-16-2005, 05:42 PM
OK, I'm game, but it's been ages since I last read it. Remind me who the other characters are and I'll choose one.

RobinHood3000
12-16-2005, 05:48 PM
You don't have to choose one--just create one. Somehow, I don't see the "slightly-pudgy barmaid" and "smiley-faced seamstress" archetypes catching on...

Nightshade

I'm sure there is no barmaid in Robin Hood, but What female characters are there besides Maid Marian and her ladies? I figured the merry men would need a friendly tavern to gather in and discuss future robbings....Why not some peripheral characters such as townspeople and cheeky tavern girls! to give them news of new rich people traversing the forest....

RobinHood3000
12-16-2005, 06:05 PM
Riesa, you are absolutely, positively welcome with us in here. Given the ratio of men to women on these forums, I imagine that using "Merryfolk" should be much more acceptable.

Will Scarlet is Robin Hood’s nephew. He is fighting the Normans out of personal conviction since Sir Godwin was dispossessed and imprisoned. His liking for the colour red earned him the nickname “Scarlet.”
Preferred Weapons:Flail

Special Abilities:
Catapult
Throttling opponents
Shield against arrows

Well this sounds like a medevil version of me. What the heck, I'll be Will Scarlet. Fighting out of personal conviction sounds better than robbing from
travelers on the road. Plus the catapult sounds like engineering. So who do I throttle?

RobinHood3000

Stealing from strangers is better than stealing from friends!! We steal only from those whose gains are ill-gotten, like file-sharers and movie bootleggers!

Pendragon
12-17-2005, 10:56 AM
True. True. The crime lords giveth and we taketh away, all in the name of piety, of course. Dear me, Night, did I not say these lads and lasses liked their "spirits"? Already they ask, "Where's the refreshments?" Dear me, this will never do. Robin, we must go on a raid, the Merryfolk require a refreshing.

On a more serious note, we could use a Little John if any of you blokes are extremely tall, (great to have a Will Scarlet!), a Midge the Miller's Son, Sir Richard (the knight Robin helped out of debt to the church), and others. I have four different copies of the book by four authors! There WAS a maid at the one inn they frequented, who came to warn them when Will Stukely was arrested! And let's not forget Robin and Maid Marian's go between, one of her older ladies in waiting, as I recall.

Hark! I hear the clarion call of Robin's horn!http://www.websmileys.com/sm/violent/sterb001.gifhttp://www.websmileys.com/sm/violent/sterb043.gif

12-17-2005, 06:37 PM
SLACKS, no kid says SLACKS, no guy says SLACKS. Oh my goodness Robinhood what is going on. I haven't heard the word slacks since my mother's friend Cathy used to call her pants that. Now I am truly confused about your age, about everything. You are more and more of a mystery.
I LOVE IT !!!!!!!!
M'Lord I don't want to be a rehash of bygone illustrious characters.I just want to be a free thinking hard working merry Ms. who can ride a horse both english and western, knows a little morse code in a pinch, looks quite well in green and can cook very well if I do say so myself. and I do say so. there is nothing like a great meal over the old campfire in the Greenwood to set all things straight and give strength and courage to the Merrymen. Please let me join, I promise not to say a word or bug you in any way........ pleez. And if there be any little ones I can always stay behind from time to time and do some sort of a puppet theatre-instead of those macabre British Punch and Judy things I could do sherrif on Nottingham gets beaned by Sir Robin of Loxley.

Wait a minute, wait a minute I could be wrong.I think people that work in retail, especially in the more high class men's and ladies apparel stores do say slacks. Well...so I am getting a picture now, perhaps the mist is clearing.
Hullo dear Pen, I love your posts. I enjoy this avatar much more than the last. But because you were my first pm once I came on to this site I of course miss the first avatar a lot. That said to me PENDRAGON.

slacks? oh yes sir our finest of the season are just over here and prices start at a mere two hundred ninety nine ninety nine. Now if you will just follow me I will start with the pure wool pin stripe...... :D :D :D

:p I'm just teasing you, rachel. No one in here is obligated to fill a mold, and I'd be horrified if you tried to wedge into one that didn't fit (likewise for a pair of Night's tights). By all means, be the free-thinking, hard-working merry Ms. who can ride a horse, use Morse code, look STUNNING in green, and cook like there's no tomorrow. Of COURSE you can join (who else will give me my daily "M'Lord" ego boost?)--say whatever you want, and bug me if it pleases you. As for little ones, there are none here but those who are brought along with you, unless the Merrymen/Merrywomen have been going on unauthorized constitutionals ;).

A Tavern Maid’s Plea

With a curtsy and a nod
I’m here for Robin Hood
“Sir, your quiver full of arrows
Must soon to endeavor
To reach Thine stalwart nemesis
That wretch who would gather for himself
All the joy, hope and treasure of Dear Sherwood.
Quick, O’ Fair Lord, gather Will & Tuck
Make haste to the Inner River’s rocks
And lie await for Nottingham.
Quick, up trees, lofty perch of doom.
Beware, lest you rend your tights.
The Seamstress’ needle has been swiped
By a kilted exile to pawn
For wayward favors and unboiled rum.
Sharpen your eyes, widen your ears
One true arrow duly pierced, shall end forever your dogged fears.
Here he comes amid Lords and Ladies, all decked
Out in diamonds, silk and rubies
Gaily laughing, unsuspecting
Sporting on their glimmering steeds
Carven hunting horn to be blown, shall warn of their presence.
Nary a thought flits through yon inflated heads,
Those who revel in such decadence,
Save seeking out Sir Pelted Fox, who runs with quaking heart;
Done delighting in his cozy hole so distant.’
I prithee, Sir, Heed this chance
To free us townsfolk from such bitter malcontent!
And With that, my Duty’s done
And I’ll be soon returning, to my dreary
Father’s confining
To Serve, Alas, To serve.
Pray continue discoursing
With such confabulatory verve."

Well now, I just got myself back from that wee littl' castle, They had some nice food there, the ladies in the room seemed quite bewildered by my presence, but my thights saved the day, Thanks for them Nightshade, I love 'em.

My gracious entry into the dining room, and swift exit throught the left window left some impression, it turns out that stealing is actually against the law. Go figure, Next time I am not gonna dine with that boring sherrif again, he kept calling me a villain and whatnot, asof he is a nice guy, keeping all the food to himself, so I just 'liberated' some of it. Unfortunately, I didn't bring me backpack, and my thights are too tight to stuff anything in it besides what's already there, so I was forced to eat it all. Next time I'll bring back some for the lot of you. :D

But other then that I'm pretty entertaining and I'm a diehard optimist so when we're in the kings dungeon facing certain hanging - I'll find the silver lining...Can ye sing and play music, m'dear? Ol' Tuck notices that the Merryfolk seem to be missing our usual Minstral, Alan-a-Dale and his wife. But songs and music we must have, can't spend all day doing nothing when there's no raids. We need a Band for the band! *chuckle* Now Ol' Tuck plays guitar and mandolin fair. Who else will bring on the music? Any kind will do, if we play all kinds we'll find something for everybody. What-ho. What say, Robin?http://www.smileyville.net/aiwand/elf.gifhttp://www.smileyville.net/aiwand/jester.gifhttp://www.smileyville.net/aiwand/aikido.gifhttp://www.smileyville.net/mellow/mf_pope.gif

I play a mean harmonica, but shipping a baby grand piano in has its snags...still, I suppose there's no harm in starting a Sherwood band, so long as it doesn't attract TOO much attention. Those groupies can get really out of control...

Having uniforms really does make things easier.

I wore a uni all through school, saved lots of time and money. I think it would behoove us to consider them. For example, how can one be expected to rush off to rob the rich when we don't know what to wear, it could take several changes (heaven forbid somethings still in the dryer) to determine the proper oufit for the days events. Also waht about mending, do you cover that or do we take care of that ourselves? For a nominal fee the uniform supplier will take care of that for us....

Just a thought.

On the other hand I do have a cute new top I'm dying to debut - ya can't do that with uniforms...

Sir Robin

I've drawn up the plans for a catapult. Here they are:

Definition:

Catapult - An ancient weapon for throwing large stones, burning debris, etc.

Problem:

You are to design and create a catapult like device that will launch a crumpled up ball of paper (ping pong ball size) at least 10 feet with accuracy.

Experiences:

1. Design your device by sketch and 3 view drawing.
2. Create the device.
3. Test the device by using it.
4. Inspect the device for cracks, weak joints, etc.
5. Strengthen & correct device.
6. Reuse & re-evaluate the device & finalize the device.

Materials:

1. Base block 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 7" plywood
2. Pivot Dowel 1/4" Dia. x 3 1/2" long
3. Strips 1/4" x 1/4" x 6 1/2" long
4. Strips 1/8" x 1/8" x 6" long
5. Eyelets to secure dowel 9/32" ID, serve as the pivot point.
6. Power Source - one number 70 Model Aircraft Rubber Band

Considerations:

You may use other materials from home as discussed in class. Remember to allow for easy rubber band attachment. Use thread (string) and glue to strengthen joints. Learn from your device and then re-engineer it for improved performance. Consider a method of cushioning the device (bringing it to a stop) so it does not self destruct.

Step One: Sketch or draw your device. As you sketch, new ideas will come to you. You may wish to do your rough work on scratch paper.

Step Two: Build your design. Joints should be glued and reinforced with nylon thread or fish line. Remember to slip the dowel into the eyelets before attaching other wood members.

Step Three: Test your device. (First unloaded, then loaded). Check for cracks, loose joints, etc. at stress areas. Figure out a way to strengthen these areas making a better device.

Step Four: Retest and re-evaluate device. Prepare to hand in for grading with your name indicated on the bottom of the base.

Step Five: Prepare for Accuracy Competition..

Here's my sketch:

Hmm. Looks nice, but you might want to shift the rubberband-launching arm junction up some more. The further away from the fulcrum, the more speed you can get, and the farther you can launch it. Alternately, you can try and make the junction adjustable and calibrate it for different distances via trial-and-error.

It just dawned on me, the people of this forum are the sweetest most endearing people probably on the entire planet.
If only the others knew what they were missing.
Virgil,
honestly your engineering is fabulous such economy. Are we fortunate or what to have you under Sir Robin.
Night you MUST mutiny, it is for Scher's own good. She is worn out from hiding away from nosey neighbors and relatives she doesn't want around and does not know what it is she is doing. All that jam in the bloodstream is extremely unhealthy. Perhaps you could have one of your heart to heart talks with her, make her see reason. It is not about boy vs. girl. Sir Robin is ...well he is Robinhood 3000, hero of the century and he must rule. there is nothing for her now but to lay down her bow and arrow and kneel before M'Lord. Who knows he may make her second in command.
Then we need to smoke out Starr. I can feel his presence, it is for his own good too, poor dear, the 'home' is in an uproar.Gone two days without taking his meds and his pink Tinker bell slippers are still waiting for him by his rocking chair. Besides that all the other seniors are beginning to pine for him."bring back our Starboy" they keep saying plaintifly with tears in their eyes. sniff it is sad really.

May the Benelovent One have mercy on us all! Munity in the ranks! Attacks on Rachel the Gentle! Tis almost enough to make a man o' the cloth forsware his vows and thrash someone dreadfully! We need an infiltrator into Scher's camp, Robin, m'Lord. Someone she would trust. Do you nae think Night might work well as a spy as well as a seamstress? After all, we don't want civil war in Sherwood, mayhap she could make yon lady see reason. A bribe might help as well, but that'd be up to your Grace to decide. Ol' Tuck will get back to the chapel and his rosery, always baring in mind that I keep my sword sharp just in case....

I thank thee fair Pen, the knight of truth and honor for your suggestions. If Night cannot bear to leave the fair Lady Scher in betrayal then perhaps my baby Same our little japanamation darling can sneak about, she is brave and little and can walk the ground with not a sound. But I still think M'Lord that you should sanitize the area, send Weeping thru the woods, for many traps have been laid and I was caught in one and hung upside down for three hours. During which poor Starr wandered back and forth under my hanging head and I could not rescue him and put him on a sturdy pony with a note attached"handle with care, very breakable." And now I do not know what has become of him, if he indeed made it back to the Lady Scher or if he has fallen prey to one of his own rickety traps. Help, help!

Papayahed should be our singer(since she is a loud singer she could start singing at the top of her voice just before we jump upon wicked caravans, those who do not perish from shock will be putty in our hands.) And since she is so bloomin cute we could have her as our little merry mascot. What are your thoughts M'Lord.?

oh my when I started reading your post M'Lord I thought you said cutting Rachel down as in ending my life. It gave me quite a turn until I read on. Oh I know dear Starr is not a myth, I saw him myself shouting "Scher is the leader,Scher is the leader. He looked raving mad and as I called out to him whoosh up I went and he laughed hysterically as I hung upside down. "Did you put up this despicable booby trap?" I called feeling like I was going to faint. I don't do well with the blood running the wrong way. "Aye he said and there are a hundred more like it. all for M'Lady Scher, ruler of this ugly green forest!" he shouted. Then suddenly he stopped and began to drool and whine about "special luncheon in the big room and bingo later" and that is when he started to walk back and forth crying and blubbering and then disappeared into the fog.
Had it not been for M'Lord I should be a glassy eyed stiff as a board used to be just hanging like a slab of meat.
Night dear you must take a side. For if you do not either side will shoot at you, both will think you a traitor. But Duckie will protect you and help you with your Lincoln Green fashion sense. And besides we have literally hoardes of Swiss chocolate stashed away, not a kitkat anywhere. So what do you say sweet girl. And do please try to talk some sense into Lady Scher, she's great at throwing things but well, her archery, well frankly it is rather bad. I saw two of her own men nursing wounds-from her during target practice before my untimely capture. I spied on them and they were saying dark words such as "couldn't hit the broad side of a barn" and "why doesn't she just wear those darn glasses" you know that sort of thing.

That's what Lady Scher's men want to know too M'Lord they are positively afraid of her marksmanship. And Jay only lady Scher is trying to start a cafuffle, Robin of Locksley is the leader and she is very welcome. that is why I want Night to speak to her and then we can all be very merry together.
But look here comes a caravan of unbelievably rich noblemen.M'Lord it is only a couple of days until Christmas and the countryside is full of destitute peasant farmers and their precious families. And because of King Richard's dastardly brother they have not enough to eat, nothing lovely to drink, no trifles for Christmas day for the little ones.
Can we not stop all rivalry and do an ambush. We could take from each nobleman all his gold except two sovereigns so that he has more than enough for his own Christmas. We could tie them up and remove their footwear, giving them a map on how to retrieve them. Then when they get there we shall be long gone to distribute to the poor and make our way back to Sherwood forest unnoticed. And we could take from our chocolate stash twelve chocolate candy kisses to put in each pair of the noblemen's shoes to show no ill will and to give to them for Christmas. But they are only five miles away M'Lord, we need to act now. The peasants are without Christmas if we do not. What say you M'Lord? For I have only these three hours and then I must away to my own family over yonder hills for Christmas. And I do so want to participate.
What say you M'Lord?

hahahahahahahah
I jump upon my noble steed Tumult and ride bareback, my favorite way. Like the wind we fly and I know not if any are behind me for I left M'Lord still organizing the others. But my time is short.
Aha there is one of them, I do believe he is supposed to be a scout. What a joke, look at him lazily travelling ahead of the others singing a lovely song of a courtier. See how his jewels sparkle upon head and neck and fingers. Those alone would fetch a goodly price but I need coin, I have no time to ride to London and arugue with the pawnbrokers.
Oh he turn's he sees me. At first he smiles to see that I am female. But now he spies my costume and his smile turns to anger.
"Hulloa what is this, has that lawbreaker taken to hiring foolish women now to do his foul deeds while he stays by the campfire and sups and sings? You can just turn around lass for you shall get nothing from me."
The tall proud man fumbles under his cloak for a pistol to shoot me but I am quicker than he. I fit my bow and let sing the arrow. It goes like a shot through his tall velvet cap and in his fear he falls backwards and off his steed who walks slowly away and begins to feed on tall grass.
I jump off mine and run like the wind. Before he can get up I take my fine strong rope from my hip and push him back down with my foot. He is too heavily laden down with robes of fur and velvet and money bags to prove a foe. He accepts being tied up with curses and threats.
"my company is only a little behind me, they will kill you and end your miserable life" he wails.
I put one of his delicate handkerchiefs in his mouth and removing his shoes take with me all his money bags. I shall put two sovereigns, one in each shoe when I am back.
What a relief here come M'Lord and the company.
M'lord I must away and I shall give all this to the villagers in the northern shire, I have more than enough.
M'Lord nods and passes me like the wind the others behind him riding in sync, well that is except for a few who keep falling to the side of their horses. They have not ridden before.
In less than three hours I leave a village cheering and laughing with joy. I turn and wave to them from the crest of the hill shouting 'Merry Christmas to you from Robinhood3000 and his merry band."
And now I ride for all I am worth for my family anxiously paces back and forth waiting for my return. My heart is filled with joy.

Ol' Tuck's gotta cut out the naps or something! Woke up and saw Ariel's doggie and thought for a moment the King's deer had shrunk! Ho, cook! What was in that flagon you gave me with me supper? What do you mean you don't know? D'ya e'en know what was in the cook pot? What? Certainly I said the grace over it as I always do! We've got a prank puller in th' camp Robin, M'Lord. Yeah, yeah. Always got to bring up me dunking you in the creek. Hee-hee. Oughta seen 'im, lads and lasses, with the little fishes floppin' about in 'is clothes! Har! Yeah, I'll have another flagon, but if ye slip something in it this time, Ol' Tuck will show ye what flaggation is all about! http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/verkleidung/costumed-smiley-091.gif

More likely, Friar Tuck had to cut out the ale. Now, see here, m'lad, Tuck were a man o'th' cloth. The Bible does say to do things in moderation, lad. A little ale won't hurt Ol' Tuck, tis good for the stomach, as St. Paul writes, and you gotta admit Tuck has a big stomach. But the lads will have their merry jest, so they slip in "strong waters" into Tuck's flagon o' ale from time t' time just to see me act like an old fool and pull stunts like forgeting where th' men's latrine is and such like. I pay 'em back though. Robin has Chapel come ever Lord's Day that we can and I preach 'em hellfire and brimstone! Get a lot over to confession after that sermon! ;)

Confessional open in about two hours, please the saints. And look ye all. I have no need of a long list of misdeeds, a simple I have sinned will do, I am certain God knows better than I what ye have been up to, and I do not need nor care to know unless it troubles ye to the point ye must unburden your mind. What? Oh, well that is the Bishop's business, not mine. I am a simple Friar. But I go by the Book. No more questions, those who wish, attend. I will e’en pray for those who don’t, as I ever have. Many say and do not. Others say not and do. Think ye about that one. Pleasure Robin! After the Mass, I leave ye again for a time. We 'ave a selection on roast an' boiled veggies, A nice suckling Ham, smothered in honey before cookin, and some apple sauce to go with it. Also got some nice tender bits of beef and steaks. There is also a wide selection of wild berrys picked from the forest and a wild mushroom broth for starters. There is also a lot of bread. And theres a veggie stew for the veggies amongst us.:p
