In my English class we have to read 1984. we've gotten to the part where the Dark-Haired girl gives Winston the letter that says "I love you" and I was tring to figure out if they ever meet and if that girl really likes him or if shes just a spy tring to trick him. I think that they do meet but that shes a spy and turns him into the thought police. could someone explain her motives. please and thankyou :santasmil

HEY! Read the book and find out what happens with her. Her name is Julia, and she and Winston do meet, but beforwarned, the end of the book is not a good, happy one....

Yes they do meet and as far as I can tell she really does love him. They both want to rebel against the government but Winson's reasons are deeper than Julia's. Keep up with the reading though!

Yes her and winston do end up meeting. But what her motives are is the real question. What i think might help you is explaining there love. In my english class we are also reading the book and in the in class discussions we have talked about this topic. I believe that they do not actually love each other, partly because of the end of the book and partly because i believe that the only reson that they are actually still or begin communicating is because that there love is outlawed and it gives them a sense of rebellion. :rage:

Yes i agree w/ you headrush24...the dont actually truly love eachother, b/c there is no emotion what so ever. i can say though that at one point when julia cant see winston, he gets mad and offedge. not saying he loves her, but saying that she's an item...umm...a necessary thing. like...ok you know when you want to be w/ someone and you can...and you want them there more then anything, kinda like that! its more so lust not love, maybe not even. they love eachothers company and eachothers thoughts and ideas. but to actually say they love eachother, no way. if anything, the most they get out of their relastionship is a "good time" and to do something rebellious against Big Brother.

That is contradictory. Julia tells Winston she loves him without even speaking a word to each other, suggesting, of course that she doesn't really. There is no love in the world of 1984. The 'love' Julia and Winston share is merely their respective passion to rebel.

As for Winston's reasons being deeper than Julia's, you don't know this. Of course, as the reader you'd get that impression because what you are reading is in Winston's perspective, and you grow to empathise with him. I'm sure if Julia spoke more openly of why she rebels against Big Brother, then we'd empathise with her much more than we do.

Hi

Julia and Winston do meet up later and she really does like him. Julia is not a part of the thought police and she is not a spy. However she sleeps with the party members regularly. Hope I answered your question!!
