Greetings everyone, I have been a long time lurker on the forums and up until now have never made a post. But I have decided to end that trend and start joining in the discussions. Reading is quite a new passion of mine and as of now I have only read, Crime and Punishment, 1984, Lord of the Flies and am very close to finishing War and Peace. After that I will go on to read Catcher in the Rye, Pride and Prejudiced, and The Great Gatsby which all three I have on my shelf right now. (And after that I want to read Ulysses, Thus Spoke Zarathustra and a few other by Nietzsche, also Jean-Paul Satre, along with Camus) So in short there is a lot that I want to read, there are far many more that I haven't named above, but a majority of them can be found in the Literature Networks Top 100 Books, which is actually the thing that made me stumble upon this site in the first place.

Can't wait to join in the conversation!

Hi, my name is Josh I mainly write poems but have started to branch out into short stories which was what lead me here :). I tend to explore human nature as well the emotions we all experience. But when I'm not doing this I write about places or describe scenes and I also write dark stories one of which I shall be uploading shortly.

I will openly admit now my punctuation is not perfect and for some people this detracts from the poem or stories I write. I apologise now if you are one of those people. What I will say is I am working on the punctuation :).

A little bit more information about me I'm 19 and I work for Four Seasons Health Care and enjoy writing in my spare time.

Yeah, its only because I was told once that reading in the bath was verging on blasphemy! Personally, I find that the smallest room in the house offers a sanctuary for reading!

Hey folks!

I stumbled onto this site while searching for a few video lectures on Shakespeare. For those looking for some of the open ones, I highly recommend using iTunes.

Looking forward to getting to know you guys better and seeing your thoughts on your favorite literary works.

I have a particular love of sci-fi and horror. Speculative fiction in general, really. Anyone have any suggestions for sites to check out in those niches? Maybe some communities?

Thanks to the Forum owners for keeping the site well-maintained. I know how hard running a forum can be.

Peace,
Omar

Guess I can't write as much as the previous people, but here goes:

Hey, I'm Night (it's my pen name), and I'm a high school students. I read lots of books and, unsurprisingly, am referred to as the nerd, since I know the answers to lots of things.

I love writing books. I've written about 15 now, but yeah, getting a publisher is hard. *sob* I'm studying lots of languages, specifically Japanese and Indonesian, but I can already speak three other languages. Hmm.

Anyway, I like music. I listen to all kinds of genres, actually, and I'm pretty good at playing the guitar.

I'm really nice, but I can get a little sarcastic sometimes. Oh, and I also draw. :P

Hmm...I guess that's it.. :))

Hey, all. My name's Rob. Frankly, I'm here to promote myself. Specifically, the podcast/audiobook of a comedic novel I've written. It's called "Gonna Roll Myself Up to the Top of the Hill", and is essentially a fictional version of the history of rock 'n' roll, as told by its most notorious failure.

edit: sorry, didn't realize I couldn't post the link.

ok so I am brand new to this site and this is my first ever post, my name is Pooka and i'm a college student looking for help with my English comp 2 papers.. my professor isn't one for giving feedback until the final draft is passed in and my next paper is on poetry which is not a type of literature that I have spent a lot of time reading so I'm not all that familiar with good writers from the genre and could use some advice on finding a poem that I can make an arguement about that applies to society today as well as when the poem was written. I'm also a voracius reader and love to be told about new books that are great reads! I'm a horror/vampire/witch/sci-fi story addict and a Douglas Addams fan but read almost everything except romance novels, they just don't interest me at all. Since this is an introduction I'll also include that I'm 36 years old and am a mother to two daughters (ages 18 and 5) and one son (age 12).

Hi everyone!
I have always loved literature and my senior year in high school, we spent the entire first semester reading existential works which started my love for existentialism. I am a French major, however, I will always love literature. That's about all I can think of for now, but I look forward to meeting everyone here and talking about literature!

Hello there!

I'm very new to this forum, and quite happy to have found a place online to share ideas about literature.

I'm a recent college grad (English major) from Pennsylvania, but am currently living in France, where I'm working as an English language teaching assistant in a high school.

I love to read, write, and learn new languages, as well as travel. I've been fortunate in the last few years to have had the opportunity to live in Istanbul, Turkey for four months, and to have gone on a research trip to Nepal. My literary interests are diverse, but I'm particularly fascinated by the English Restoration Period, Gothic literature, representations of the East in European literature, and the postmodern. I'm currently finishing up Wm. Somerset Maugham's masterpiece, Of Human Bondage, which I have enjoyed immensely.

I look forward to many good discussions here!

I was surfing the internet wondering if there were any literature forums just like this. :yawnb: My ethnicity is Korean and have always been interested in English literature, although sometimes it is difficult to process the extremely artistic way of some pieces. My Korean name is Hong Chang Bae but I go by the name of Steve.

My hobbies include : singing, writing, reading, running, smoking(I am not sure if it is considered a hobby), organizing, and so many more.

I like any kind of literature that requires me to think and rethink to understand the idea. In other words, I like DEEP literature. :yawnb:

By being involved in this forum I look forward to meeting new people with similar interests as I have, and also I am looking forward to be criticized for the writing pieces that I want to upload!

It is a pleasure to be here. I am not an intense blogger. More occasional voyer into the creative minds of us writers and readers in pursuit of our diverse minds seeking new horizons, manifold perspectives and insightful revelations. To be shared at times on introspection. Or rushes of exuberance between creative bouts of genius. [I pass here haha-my brain is simply manic at times and out of control.] It’s great to be here. Given I am in to science fiction I wont define here. Except to revel in the idea of the possibilites of hyperspace entwined within the digital data realms of the internet where strangeness lurks…it’s my brain again.

Hello. My name is Mike. I've been looking for a halfway decent literature forum to post my stories and stuff on, but the last few I've looked at have been either dead, or full of ad bots. So I'm trying again here I guess.

So I've been writing for fun for about six years (since I was eleven), I wrote a two hunderd page zombie book when I was fifteen that almost got published and since then I've been trying to outdo myself in description and characterization to actually get one of my stories published.

So hi, and I look forward to becoming part of the community here.

Winter Lite
11-27-2011, 06:41 AM
Hi... Just call me Winter Lite. My beloved pseudonym :)

I'm 14 and Indonesian. I may not critical and intelligent in dictions, syntaxes, or everything like that. But I like literature. I love short stories the best, rather than novels. Here's my story.

My first short story, when I was realized that literature is interesting is The Locket, from Kate Chopin. It was on the Typing master v6.01 LOL! It was quite long, and I try to comprehend the story -- failed, don't understand. I just know that the soldier was dead. and Octavie love him. And that's why I like it. The complexity of plotting and where and when the story takes places and time. I mean, it suddenly shift to another part of the life. In The Locket, I'm talking about from the bonfire of the soldiers, moved to a woman named Octavie.

The next short stories I read is Difficult People, The Lottery Ticket, and The Chorus Girl -- Chekhov's. The Difficult People is hard to me at the first glances, I must read it more. But I got The Lottery Ticket, and The Chorus Girl key. The lost of false future dreams (Lottery Ticket), and the poor innocent chorus girl, being humiliated on the second time. Hehe.

My favorite story right now is The Trousseau. I like its description from the beginning of the story. Like : ... drowned in a perfect sea of green. The absence of care for the nature surrounding them, etc. I like its timing though. The first visit is taking on "many years ago", The second : "7 years after the first", and the third : "A year ago". See the ambiguity? Well, so many things I love in this story.

I joined this forum, because I think I'll be able to find some good recommendations from the experts here. There are many stories out there I haven't read. I'm just curious. And for the interesting discussions also will be a learning pack for me.

The first time I visited this forum is simply writing on Google : the trousseau chekhov's analysis. And it brought me here. And whew... It was on 2009 and was very long discussions, yet interesting. They're very critical about the single detail on the story. Like the word "fate" on The Trousseau. A single word can make the reader feel curious.

So... why I'm talking about the stories? LOL! That's from me. Nice to meet you all~

Hello all, I'm Christina!

I've always loved literature and am currently taking an English Lit A Level at home through home study as I work full-time. It's rather difficult to keep yourself motivated after a long day's work, and plus I don't always have the benefit of being able to discuss the works I am studying with others who appreciate them as I do. I'm not a huge online forum kinda gal. I have a facebook that I occasionally wander over to, but that's about it. However, since my friends have repeatedly failed me on the book club front-- here I am. I have decided to hit the virtual world running. I'm not exactly sure what this site is all about or if it really is what I'm looking for, but it definitely caught my interest and I'm hopeful!!

If anyone is actually reading this, my name is Autumn. I'm 29, soon to be 30 and moderately freaking out about that. I have degrees in Communications and International Relations. I love music, theatre and all forms of self expression.

I'm far from your stereotypical intellectual type, but I would really like to read and discuss classic literature. I'm outgoing and outspoken so feel free to ask me anything you'd like to know!!

I'm a fourth year art student at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, Scotland. My tutors encouraged me to work more with writing since I do so much anyway. I started a blog and wanted to reach out to more people.

Since I chose to write my dissertation on time travel I've been reading stuff like Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut and Jorge Luis Borges collection Labyrinths. I've been looking into multiverse and other ideas related and writing a lot about that just now but sci fi in general is my bag. Hopefully I'll post something on here that will be worthy of attention for someone to look up my writing blog Mindscape Words.

Hello everyone!

I'm Jenny, live in LA, and I LOVE the written word. I studied literature in college, and I continue to enjoy reading and writing it. I'm trying to write a children's book by the end of this year, and my sister-in-law is going to be illustrating it, so I'm very excited.

Anyways, I look forward to being a part of this forum. It's great to meet people who are passionate about literature as I am. It's like a...

Hi, I'm a writer of short stories and poetry. I have written 3 so far each of which I am happy to offer to be adapted into a short film or a feature length film. 2 of them I'm happy to let use for free, provided I am credited. I am also in the process of a sequel to the one I'm not willing to let use of for free and a novel. I also write song lyrics and music and enjoy drawing.

Hi Everyone!

I'm new to the forum and excited to exchange literary ideas with fellow bibliophiles.

A little about me: I returned to college in my late 40's to finish my undergrad degree at the University of Michigan in English Language and Literature. It was demanding, stimulating, and oh so wonderful! In order keep myself reading and discussing great works, I started a Classic Book Club with some great women 2 years ago. I've come to this site in the past to glean some wisdom for our discussions. I love to write and hope to publish one day. I'm not a good self-promoter, which could be code for a lack of confidence and/or courage to take some risks at rejection!

Besides reading and writing, I love to knit, cook, and my husband and I work with college students in our church. That has become a very rewarding part of my life--to invest time in the next generation. I have 2 daughters who are currently out of the nest, and we're enjoying a new phase of life. I have a passion for learning and knowledge and the way it opens me up to new possibilities and often new people. I speak a little German and want desperately to learn Spanish. Thanks, everyone!

This is a very difficult step!

It is not easy to speak about oneself and at the same time try to give a good first impression since it is by these words I will be remembered forever in this forum!

Just arriving to the neighborhood, being the new guy in the area, what can I say?:

"Hi everybody!" or "Esteemed fellow members!"

The first is overly familiar for a first time, too early to use it!

The second is... how to put it? Too pedantic!

So how to start this?

Well, close the eyes and jump into the arena:

Hello forum people, I am happy to share this place with you all!

(OK, it seems fifty-fifty)

Now, the second part is as hard as the first: How do I describe myself?

"I am a writer!" No, no, too early to be a writer, maybe with time I will earn the definition but not now.

"I am an amateur writer!" This is true, but I do not like to show me too humble after all!

Here we go:

I love to write and I think here I have the opportunity to make my work known and get evaluated, to participate in a place with talented people who may review, edit, and comment my need to endow posterity with a string of words in disguise of a story. And with time, learn to reciprocate in kind.

My 'bio' is plain enough:

I was born! Undoubtedly!

Then I tried hard to recognize the difference between the white and black that gives form to the letters that make the words of our beautiful language, and now, in the spaces that my work and travels allow me, I try to become a "storyteller".

In my eagerness to know the end of a tale when I am writing, I end up writing micro-stories, mini-stories, or nano-stories since I cannot wait all the time to reach the end of a novel.

Having in mind a statement made by Stephen King about his will to write a short story always ends in a big volume, I will end this introduction here, before it takes the path toward a lengthy script.

I must also add, that the similitude with Mr. King in writing, is only in the way I can make grow a description of myself. Unfortunately, there is no similitude en talent!

Thank you for reading all this rigmarole!

I found this website on the recomendation of a friend. It looks good. I want to get involved in the dialog. Short stories are my favorite: reading and writing. I have done some poetry. Also, I have written one Fantasy Novel, no luck yet towards publication.
I live in LA here in the San Fernando Valley, and am involved in some 12 step groups, and attend a couple classes at a local Community College. I love animals, reading and writing, for the last 5 years I have been vegitarian. I use to smoke, but not anymore. They were tough to get rid of but I managed to kick the habit.
I am eager to read some of your short stories and poetry, and share some of mine.

Hi, everyone, I'm new to the forum and looking forward to joining in =) My name is Irena, I'm 22 and I'm from Bulgaria.

I've always been rather in love with the English language /well, that and almost every other language I've ever studied/ and that is partly the reason why I became an English teacher here in Bulgaria. That is also the reason why I absolutely adore poetry, stories, plays and any other form of expression that allows you to play around with words :)

On that note, I am currently participating in a contest called Let's Talk Shakespeare, which is interesting, because what you have to do is film yourself reading Hamlet's soliloquy. Anyone can try, but of course that only refers to people in the country, sorry. Anyway, the winner with the most likes goes on a trip to Shakespeare's birthplace, which would be so exciting. Here's the video, if you feel like lending a hand and liking, I would be ever so grateful =)

http://shakespeare.intellect.bg/2012/01/15/15-01-12190419/

/ I know it's rubbish, I'm no actor, but it was still a lot of fun to do it :) /

So thanks for taking the time to read my introduction and let the discussing begin! ^^

Hello all. I just registered here and hope to peer through this porthole onto life's expanses. I've tended to focus on pursuits, a trait that serves one well, while too often leaving the panorama unappreciated. I've come here to slake my thirst for well expressed ideas about well expressed ideas, and from what I've sampled so far, I've found reason to be optimistic. I don't expect to agree with probably 90% of what I find here, but I'll try to appreciate the thoughts expressed as much as I'll enjoy those provoked.

Id like to introduce myself simply through a piece of my own writing. I can think of no better way to do so.....Glad to join The Literature Network, this is me:

....
This is why you came here. This, possibly, is the result of sitting in the same spot trying to remember the same thoughts; the ones that slipped away. So, it’s just a matter of time now. Rather, a sordid negligence for the realization that you can’t bring time down, or take it with you to say- in the minimal sense; not in this place; not in this tense. And from that comes a certain tension, in mind or of it, that every intention paid henceforth to ascertain an attention of “mine”, but in this case, above it, and in every way the same as the subversive retention and blame, but only in passing, of an ascetic so passively ashen. Who could really feel like this? Could anyone be this pathetically passionate??

I'm here to share knowledge via story &inspiration with poetry like this I wrote for a gal starting to learn guitar..caution, my writing is somtimes slightly erotic! Here's a taste:

Hinterwinter Music
white peaceful & bright the sun shines
gleaming gold from the deepest of mines
music plays from strings vibrating from your astute hands
that lights all hearts in the park as if in a paradise of fruit & sands
sounds from playing bring around children by a fountain
as finishing the song you feel as if just climbed the highest mountain
later we sell cinnamon rolls homemade & perfect smiles we receive like beautiful tiles
with roses around we kept inside, at night show our love in the snow
as a sunflower grows in Spring, inside energy flows until eyes are aglow

& plz enjoy this too, mostly i'm interested in nature, truth, expansion & love so be honest with what you think!

Food paradise
fields of oats & abundance in many notes
apples blooming by every road
falling & jumping from trees peaches grow more than in a marsh does tadpoles & toads
Green houses shoot up life in oreganos & basil & the water that sprays around dazzles
as light effuses the land & levitates lifeforce in splenderous giant & succulent strawberries
that are used in fruit salads with brown sugar from mammoth canes
reaching the sky as the cherry & durian trees on many lanes
chaga mushrooms on lots of trees glowing bright white
used in teas along with rooibos & mints perfuming the land as lavender & lifts all as wind to a kite

Hello there, I just joined your forum because it seems like a good place with good people :)

I have been told that lists are good so:

- I am 25

- I live in the UK

- My love for literature / English was recently rekindled, on an epiphany type basis (after five years of full time employment, I came to the stunning realisation of what I want, which is to be a teacher)

- In terms of what I 'do' in my spare time, well another list is really in order but currently I'm TRYING to keep a handle on the following: writing some fiction, writing some music, learning project management, learning German, learning to maintain my motorcycle, learning to ride my motorcycle, drawing (bad) pencil portraits, joining an athletics/running club, volunteering at youth groups, volunteering at cub scouts, planting trees, applying for jobs left right and centre (this in advance of applying for a teaching degree, later in the year), brushing up on my world history, brushing up on my literature, getting pretty good with Christian apologetics, flying to visit my girlfriend every few weeks - and generally trying to be grateful for things too.

I'm looking forward to getting involved here, so take care and see you around :)

I love my transcendentalists) and, when the rare bit of free time comes by way, I am in the middle of the Game of Thrones series by George R. R. Martin.

hi I'm Luke, i live in the mountains of Wicklow in the Eastern province of Leinster in Ireland, not too far from the Irish Sea and often at certain times one can connect with a sense of mythology what with sea-mists and the long view through the pines ... I think America must be a fantastic country to produce a writer like Cormac McCarthy who I think is pretty much unsurpassed in modern fiction writing ... perhaps JM Coetzee's earlier work is as awesome but i feel blessed on the planet at present to have two living greats among us ...

anybody come across an American writer in the same league as McCarthy?

Just for the sake of posting my very first comment, here goes.
Hi everyone, Kartik here. Reading has been my most cherished hobby for as long as I can remember, and some of the most beautiful memories of my childhood revolve around a book.
Whiling away time lost in the innocent world of kid detectives, mythical creatures and far-away magical lands as I was nursing a fractured leg, spending hours blissfully lost in the aisles of a favorite bookstore, waking through entire nights during my vacations, desperate to reach the end of the latest masterpiece I'd endeavored to finish.
My interest has veered towards non-fiction today (largely history, sociology and linguistics) but prose is still what excites me.
Looking forward to interacting with fellow bibliophiles.

How delightfully modest of you to talk like that, you write flawlessly! I'd puff my chest, dig a flagpole into the ground, shout out Tarzan-style, and then proceed to party for days if I ever realized I'd reached that kind of a level in German. :P
Good luck, by the way.

Hello everyone, I'm very glad that I've stumbled upon this forum during my internet travels. I'm currently reading Dante, which I love. I have a vast literary taste, not quite set on one specific genre.

Hi Everyone.
First of all sorry for my broken English. Not much time ago I started to study English because I wanted to read my favorite authors in their own language. After a while I thought a forum could be a good chance to improve my new skill, so I came across this forum and I read some verse and short story. I liked them. So this is why I am here now.
By the way this is my first writing in English.

About me I dare say that I can love many things within five minutes, several things within some day or some week, but there are just three things I love forever, that is my wife, books and good wine.
It was nice meeting you.

Hi I am new here and actually stumbled across this site by accident but I am so glad I did. I found my love for reading late in life and now I have my BA in Literature. I am currently working on my masters degree in Education and my teaching certificate for secondary education. I will be teaching literature one day very soon!!! I look forward to looking through this forum even more and seeing what everyone has to say!

Micky Fudge
02-28-2012, 08:21 AM
Hello everybody!

My name is Michael Porter. 'Micky Fudge' was my father's pet name for me when I was a child. He also called me 'Mick Mack Fudgelorum', but I thought if I chose that as my username you might doubt my sanity. If I were compelled to name my favourite poem, I think I would have to choose 'New Year Letter' by W H Auden, but then I would regret not having chosen 'Strange Meeting', or 'Dover Beach', or Barnfield's 'Sonnet 11' or a whole host of others.

I'd like to share two poems with you. The first is one of the Harper's Songs from Ancient Egypt. It's addressed to a young man by a girl who loves him. Egyptian girls called their lovers their brothers.

Come to me, my brother,
Like a charger on the battlefield,
Like a bull to his pasture,
For the heaven is sending us love
Like a flame spreading through straw,
And desire like the swoop of the falcon.

The second poem comes from the Finnish Kanteletar. A girl longs for the return of her soldier:

Should my treasure come,
My darling walk by,
I'd know him by his footsteps,
Recognise him by his tread.

As mist I'd go out,
As smoke I would reach him,
As sparks I would speed,
As flame I would fly.

I'd kiss his mouth
Though doom stared him in the face,
I'd drape my arms round his neck
Though death had hold of it,
I'd stretch beside him
Though his side were all bloody.

I hope you like these poems.

Well Hi there!

I am new here, so I still need to get used to everything hehe
I am particularly interested in Charles Dickens, he is my favourite author. If anyone knows about some interesting threads concerning him please let me know hehe :D
A lot of people say that Terry Pratchett is the Dickens of the 21st Century, do you think so?

Dickens is the Dickens of the 21st Century, Nightowlpip!

Hello, everyone! My name is Francisco, you may guess by my name that english is not my first language, and actually that's right. I am uruguayan, so I speak spanish. I am twenty years old, and I study literature. I want to learn from you, and express my views referring to some books, as well. I also would like to improve my english. I am fond of a lot of authors: Oscar Wilde, Homer, Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, Goethe, Sade, Dostoievsky, Virgil, Dante Alighieri, William Shakespeare, James Joyce, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Voltaire, and, frankly, I must be forgotting someone important to me also. I think I have no favourite author, I love too many of them. I like listening to music, especially gothic. I love Christopher Nolan's movies, especially Following and Memento. I hope to find this virtual space to be an interesting, delightful experience. Dark regards.

An initiation on a forum is always a mixed bag of feelings. You feel honored to be part of an intelligent organization of peoples, yet you feel a certain sense of nervousness to be starting from scratch. It is a hard emotion to put a finger on, but I do hope to contribute my thoughts and philosophy to this forum.

As this is an introductions forum, introductions are in order! :)

I am a student in middle school who loves to read. Don't underestimate that power of youth, as many adults have a jaded and irreversible pessimistic view on society and life. I am into motorsports, mainly, and like the noise and chaos which lifts you from the moody angst of philosophy and ideas. However, I do like to explore a philosophical side of myself. I like graphic design, as in typography and computer art, as well as computer science, reading (obviously), philosophy, psychology, and studying different views of human life. I am also a huge dog fan! :wink5:

I feel like in a society of deep thinkers and readers it is okay to be a homosexual. I'm gay and I really don't care what others think about that, as long as it doesn't limit my life in a way that is meaningful. I'm not out of middle school, and you can imagine the difficulty of being openly gay in middle school, especially being a boy. I think being shunned from some groups really was good in a way, because it made me think about the philosophical, hidden side of society and gave me some more thinking time. So in a sense, I'm glad I came out, because it gave me some time to think things over.

Being in 7th grade, I am probably vastly underread compared to some of you veterans on this forum. I frequently skip around books, but I've come up with a regime to sticking to one book. The book I'm reading right now is To Kill A Mockingbird. I've put Atlas Shrugged off until I'm finished with a couple others, because everyone knows how long it is. Again, I'm vastly underread, so here are some classic books I have read, and what I've thought about them...

1. 1984 (George Orwell)
My favorite book of all time. Undisputed king of dystopian science fiction, my favorite topic. It changed my outlook on life forever.

2. Animal Farm (George Orwell)
Orwell occupies my top 2 on my list because of his fierce writing style, rather like mine! This is a great, stirring book as well.

3. Lord of the Flies (William Golding)
Had to read this book for school. I skipped 1/4 of it, so my information may be a little bit off, but I did love this book. I only skipped for the sake of getting it done in time. It was very good and symbolistic, from what I've read in it.

4. Old Man and the Sea (Hemingway)
Probably the most relaxing and down-to-earth book I've read in a long time. It is a very light, relaxing read, and is very beautiful in it's language, too.

5. The Catcher In the Rye (Salinger)
I need to come back to this one. I read it when I was 10, and didn't fully understand it. I need to come back to it, and maybe I'll get it.

6. Of Mice and Men (Steinbeck)
Not a huge fan of Steinbeck... dragged on forever. Just for the sake of knowing what happened at the end, I used SparkNotes! :wink5: It was extremely boring.

Of course, I've read many other books than that, but I like to focus on the classics. Some books I plan to read and discuss are, in no particular order...

1. To Kill a Mockingbird
2. Brave New World
3. Fahrenheit 451
4. Atlas Shrugged
5. Catch-22
6. The Great Gatsby
7. The Grapes of Wrath
8. East of Eden
9. The Joy Luck Club
10. Slaughterhouse-Five
11. Things Fall Apart
12. A Clockwork Orange (if my parents will let me...)
13. War and Peace
14. Shakespeare's Works
15. Homer's Works
16. Beowulf
17. Grendel

Dystopian literature is my favorite genre. :wink5:

See you on the forums!

Hi everyone. New here. A great fan of P.G. Wodehouse, Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, James Herriot, and Damon Runyon to name but a few among many. I dare not leave out Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde from the many category, however. Presently I'm enjoying 'Just Enough Jeeves' ...but is there ever? Thankfully this tome is upwards of 700 pages so I anticipate many happy times enmeshed in prickly situations with the likes of Bertie Wooster, Bingo, Boko, Uncle Percy, the twins...and on we go.

Hi!

I'm Ivy, 20 years old and from London :)

Stumbled across this forum whilst conducting some research for university assignments and thought I might as well join!

I'm doing an English Literature degree and the mass of primary texts I have to read is immense. I usually get through at least three texts a week and then there's all the secondary reading to do on top.

However, I love literature, so love my course! It's a shame that I don't get to squeeze in more 'leisure' reading since most of my time is used up with the reading for my course.

People always ask me who my favourite author is, and what my favourite book is....I honestly can't choose! I love exploring the different literary movements, from the ancient times right up until contemporary literature.

I'm hoping that I can share my knowledge with others, as well as learn from everyone here ^_^

Hi everyone. I've never been on a forum before, so bear with me. I decided it might be nice to meet some new like-minded people. Since I finished my BA, I have been starved for book discussions and literary theories. I am hoping I will be welcomed and get a fix of the "good stuff." There's nothing like nerding out with a good book.

Hello everyone,
I'm a newbie and to be honest I found this forum while looking for answers to my daughter's questions for her A level coursework. I've read most of the books she's studying but it was a long time ago. In light of this I've re-read a lot of novels I read in my youth as well as 'new' stuff like Kite Runner. It's such a difference to read these books for pleasure rather than analysing every word or nuance.....not very helpful from my daughter's point of view though.
The biographical stuff?......I'm in my 50's, four children ranging from late teens to thirties. I work in Sexual Health supporting those that are involved in sex work and I have a degree in Medieval and Modern History with History of Art. As a preference I like historical fiction but then get really annoyed when they ignore historical facts. I read the Da Vinci Code knowing that it would drive me mental and sure enough it did! As it is his 200th anniversary I am currently reading the works of Dickens and discovering some absolute gems that passed me by previously. I'm quite catholic in my tastes though, I will read practically anything from the classics to the trashiest of blockbusters as a bit of light relief. I'm also quite keen on Pratchett and Gaiman, anything with a bit of intelligence and humour I suppose.
Anyway folks I'm happy to be here - Ellybelly x

...Um....Hello....

I am a senior in highschool although I do graduate in May. I am homeschooled. I love to sing and my biggest dream is to become a crime scene investigator. I have a 7 year old brother and I am learning how to play the guitar. We have a TV but we don't get network television, so my parents have bought TV shows from the 80s for us to watch and they are amazing. I love country music and I am obsessed with The Voice. I adore Blake Shelton, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and Kellie Pickler. My favorite TV shows are The A Team, Air Wolf, The Dukes of Hazzard, Star Trek, The Voice, and all the crime shows (Especially CSI:Las Vegas). Yep..... that's about it. Anything else you wanna know just holler.

Oh yeah.... I am also in LOVE with Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice.

Love Always! Keep The Faith!

(I'd also like to post a storie here just to hopefully get a reply on one soon.)

Twist, twist, twist. A spark emerges from the sticks as heat fills the area like an exeplosion. the room filling with light as though the sun had come in a blazeing moment to drownd the dark out of the sky. The life of the now blazeing light is waveing, twisting, thrusting, crashing, crushing. All sorts of movments only the wind able to change its course. This now liveing light grows wilde and viscious attacking all that come close with a chance of death. But this new life like all others have a new preadator. like the mouse infront of a snake that is being charged by an egal. One swoop its gone as the cold stream runs. The light trys to grow and flee from its new enemy but the stream is driveing to fast. CRASH! The light is hit and the stream starts emptying but the light lowers and lowers and lowers tell finaly its nothing but black pouder but small gusts of it flying off of it with a dark color leaveing nothing but the barren wast of what it has caused. the stream had run out after have of gotten its prey it sinks in and makes home....

Currently, I'm engaged in reading all of Dostoyesky's novels and short stories from a Kindle compendium of all his writing and loving it, as it stands in exotic contrast to my usual engagement with mathematics and computing. Hello, all-- I'm a veteran journalist, made a living writing for the past half-century. Newspapers, national trade magazines, hundreds of speeches, more than 200 live TV newscasts. Copywriting for some ads, produced a few marketing campaigns.
In recent years I've written two books, a rather fat novel about kids and WW II, which I hope will be shelved (mentally, if not physically) in Southern Humor, and a memoir set in Nassau and Cape Canaveral. Its keywords include John F. Kennedy, the Project Mercury astronauts, Raquel Welch, Jose Feliciano, a nymphomaniac and a hungry nine-foot hammerhead shark.
Both books have been vetted by pro editors. I'm in the process of re-reading and polishing both, for the umpteenth time. Isn't it amazing how you can always improve a piece, no matter how many times you've gone over it?
Hope to self-publish them this summer as POD and ebooks. I'm interested in hearing about experiences of other indie publishers.

Hi, I'm Rhonda. I live in Independence, MO. I am a nurse, but I don't work with patients, I work with their charts. I've never met the people who are in my company, but I've worked from home since 2008, and I travel.

I knit, and I read. I own a Nook color and a Kindle, but my most favorite author, (which is an odd obsession) is for the most part, not allowed on either devise. He is too good for that. I am 50 years old. I travel alot for my job. I just spent nearly a month in Albuquerque.

I didn't start reading Kerouac until I turned about 20. It was 1981...so it started. At 24, I went to New Orleans cause of that book. When I was 25 (I looked about 12), I made my mom and stepdad who took me to the mountains in Colorado, they had to stop in Denver so I could walk down Larimer street. I wasn't aware he was dead, until I decided to write him a fan letter, and glanced in the information part of the book. By that time, I had read almost everything he wrote.

This goes on and on, and now I travel with my work. When I went to Albuquerque, I had to go to Taos, cause of Kerouac. I had to go into Santa Fe. I missed Las cruces, but I saw the exit to it. I am leaving for San Antonio on Sunday. If I'm there for a week, I will certainly go to the college museum in Austin. Some of his work is there. I've not seen the original scroll yet. I will eventually....I heard my work is sending people to Massachusetts. ...granted I read alot of authors, but I have the book The Beat Atlas, and that's the one who's affected my life the most. Not just him, but mostly.

I don't really have time for hobbies since I'm a full-time student and I work full time. I'm 27, about to turn 28 this year. I have no children and recently became engaged. :blush5:

Hello fellow Lovers of Literature. My name is Mona Marlow - not really - but it's what we'll go with for now. I was directed to this site during my research and I found it too difficult to leave. This site seems like a great resource. I look forward to communicating with all of you in the future.

I am an amateur writer - meaning only that I have yet to publish my work. Currently - amoung other things - I am working on a collection of short stories that depict the romanticism of childhood innocence and the loss of said innocence. I am always looking for reading material that will expand my mind and vocabulary on this topic.

I am a collector of new words - as nothing is worth reading if it does not leave you with something you didn't have before. The walls around me are covered in "sticky notes" - filled with words I love. If you have a new word for me - I am waiting anxiously! :)

Hello everyone, nice to see so many intelligent people excited to talk about literature.

I am a 23-year-old English MA student living in Canada. I like all kinds of books but I'm mainly interested in American Gothic and 19th and 20th century American detective fiction. Currently I'm working my way through the novels of Thomas Harris.

Right now I'm completing the final course for my degree and working part-time as a server until I start my PhD in the fall.

Hello all,

I have tried for more years than I care to remember to organize a discussion group for literature and philosophy. Alas, no noteable success. I don't know why I never thought to try online until now... At any rate, here I am, eager to meet any and all fellow afficionados of language and thought.

Hey,
I am so very excited to have found this website a couple of hours ago. I was impressed with a blog I saw written by a teenager, so I had to check out this network. I realized that it was a community I could join which makes it all the better.
For those who care to know, I am a teenager. And as most of you know and have experienced, this is a pretty hectic time of life. I do a lot of thinking and think it will be good to put my thoughts into writing. As for hobbies, I do not really have a particular favorite, but I do love to listen to music and lie in the sun and tan. I am also involved in a lot of sports activities which keeps me pretty busy. I love to meet new people and learn about their life stories (in a non creepy way of course :) )
Neways, I would love to get feedback or messages about my future posts!
Thanks for taking the time to read this~

Hello this is Dimitris from Greece.
I'm a high school teacher with many interests, including spearfishing, solar energy, piano, rc airplanes, etc. I like short stories, I find them very fun to read and kind of easier to develop (I like a a moody plot with an interesting twist at the end).

In this forum I aim to mostly stay out of the way and just read others, since English is not my mother tongue. However I will try to create something in English, and you tell me what you think.

Its nice to be here,

I'm looking to find people with whom I can discuss literature. I love classics, and I was hoping this would be a good place to rediscover my favorites. I have just graduated and am now on my way to graduate school where I plan to get a Masters in Anthropology. I hope I can find other members here that are free thinkers, slightly sarcastic, and love to read as much as I do.

I am very new indeed to posting on line so I hope I clicked the right button. I am a storyteller, actress, educator all at the same time. That is to say some portion of all of my hats, including my music (vocal and instrumental), seem to be a part of all that I do. I live in Knoxville, TN and my name is Linda Upton Hill. I am a member of The Carpetbag Theatre, Inc. of Knoxville. My son's are grown now and empty nest is still a little tricky. I have begun my studies to become a certified educator, so finding this site is a God send. I do not know if the way to ask a question for everyone to see and offer feedback is only here or by clicking the 'start a new thread' button. Someone please advise me on that point. Well, here I go--stepping off a bit-of-a personal cliff,:seeya: out of my comfort zone of familiar ways to join in. Thank you for the warmth and welcome I have found so far.

Sincerely,

Tale Teller :seeya

Stumbled across this lovely little community while trying to revise for my Modernism exam. I'm a third year English Lit student at Lancaster University, about to take my last exams ever. (Modernism on Friday, then American Lit post-1900 on Monday). Right this minute I'm trying to revise Lawrence's Women in Love, Woolf's To The Lighthouse, and Conrad's Lord Jim. Tomorrow I need to move onto some poetry as well.

I look forward to swapping ideas with you all!

Hi all, I'm not sure where I am on the artist scale. I used to call myself a poet, until I finished school and had to write to make meager wages. And you can't put on Craigslist, Poet for Hire. So now I'm sort of a poet.

I do love to write it still and add it to music, film, and other mediums. I cannot do without it--which is probably my only criteria.

Anywho, I'm interested to see how the posts are and to join in the conversations.

Thanks for your time.

Hi! (:

So, I've been surfing this site for quite a while and finally decided to join it. I have just graduated high school and am still not sure how I will spend the upcoming years. However, I'll probably won't study literature or languages and it will remain my love instead of career. But who knows, right? I hope this forum will help me to deepen my interest in classics and I'm also sure about that :) You can never get enough of them!

Nice to meet you all!

Heya, I'm Switch. I am a writer who likes to try different forums and styles of writing to find out what people like and will read. I am Southern, and have a lilt of southern mentality and accent in my writing. I write a lot of freestyle and off the cuff straight from brain to written word without thinking. This can oft earn either fans or foes. It's okay, I like opinions and do not profess to be professional at writing. It is just a joy for me to create characters and storylines. It is a release for me, as it is for most writers. I hope you will at least read my ramblings and comment so I can better at it.

Hiii there...
My real name is Tommaso, i am eighteen.
I come from Italy, a really nice country, you should visit it
Sorry for my bad english, i do my best in order to improve it
My nickname is Heidy because i love one philosopher, Heidegger, and i am sure that Heidegger's closer friends called him heidy :)
Heidy is also a character of a cartoon, a small child that lives with his grandfather on one mountain among sheeps and nature. But i don't wanna make you bored with this story.
I decided to register myself here for two main reason:
1) I wanna learn english having fun
2) Next week i am having the last exam and i will leave school in order to apply at medicine university. But i am sad because i don't wanna leave philosphy, literature...at the beginning, five years ago when i started high school i hated it..but step by step i fell in love and now i can't imagine one life without it.
So i would like to keep reading books and comment these with you :)
I will start with "der prozess" by Kafka that is the last book i red.
I must admit that i have red it two times and i haven't understood it yet at all ahaha
it's a really hard book and i would like to know what do u think about it.

i think it's enough..
Nice to meet you all

Hello everyone,
I just stumbled across this forum today while I was researching which Charles Dickens book I should read first. My lucky day! I am sure that I will be spending some of my spare time on here whenever I take a break from the latest book that I have my nose in. You see I don't have a "bucket list" but actually a "reading list". My goal is to read all of the greats of classic literature!
So anyway, it is nice to meet you all and now I must get back to Tolkien.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading things that everybody writes and learning a lot. Nice to meet you!

I am new to this site and was happy to find it. It is hard to remember all of the poems I used to know and I am happy to be able to look them up.

I am retired:biggrin5: and do whatever I wish now. Yeah!!!
I do quilting, crochet and cross stitch. I have more than I can do as I have saved material and thread for years and the problem is where to begin. I have made two quilts and a table topper thus far and am doing counted cross stitch picture for my daughter. It is hard to see the holes in the cloth so it is going very slow.

I hope to be able to use this site a great deal.

Hello everyone,
I spent much of my youth consuming every book available. After that I was mostly concerned with the Bible and sacred texts, spending more than ten years with these as my primary focus, and working hard as a volunteer minister. Welding and steel fitting is my trade, and I have always considered myself more of an artisan than anything else.

Some of my pursuits include weightlifting, bow hunting, and backpacking.

To instill a love of reading in my two children is a personal goal of mine, and lately, the past year, I have been reading classic literature with renewed vigor myself.

Thank you all for having me.

-Joel-

Mr. Mauve
07-01-2012, 11:57 AM
Hi everyone. It's been awhile since I've been a member of a forum, but I'm excited to join this vibrant conversation about my favorite thing - literature! I am a philosophy major at a small northeastern liberal arts college currently seriously considering switching to an English major (I would do it if it weren't for all the theory of, in my opinion, dubious philosophical worth I'd have to go through). My favorite kind of literature is epic poetry (especially the Odyssey), Romantic poetry, and especially Modernist prose. I've loved Virginia Woolf for a long time now and I've been inspired by A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man multiple times. I picked up Faulkner for the first time this summer and enjoyed him immensely even though I'm sure I barely understood him. I've started the monumental task of reading In Search of Lost Time (the Kilmartin translation) and I'm absolutely loving how poetic it is. Too bad I'll never speak French. Although I am minoring in German so I can hope to someday read Kafka in the original.

I'm very interested in the philosophy of art and the artistic process, even though I doubt if I'll ever be able to write something creative myself. As a fair warning, I suspect that I can be a little irritating in debates because I basically follow the Socratic method and, I know, no one likes a gadfly. I have two pet peeves that I'll always be willing to get into a debate over (and, admittedly, never admit that I'm wrong about): when people speak of artistic intent like it's a knowable entity and when people try to impose anything but subjective value judgments on works of art.

As for my name, mauve is my favorite color. It's very floral.

That's all for my introduction - I'm excited to get to know members of the forum!
