Ok I dont know if I missed something...but isnt the concept of this book not to show any emotion what so ever...that means your not allowed to get married and have sex..well then my question is how can the females have babies?wouldnt that mean you have to show or give them love...and/or show emotions to your husband!!!(maybe i missed something so if i did please tell me!!)

Yes, the point is not to show emotion but, you learned today that they made babies by having artificial insemination or in newspeak, artsem. I think that the people aren't SUPPOSED to show any emotion or else it is considered a face crime, but I think there are more people just like Winston who are thinking exactly like him it's just that they are too afraid to reach out to someone.(pay attention in class :P)

I was paying attention I aced my quiz...but dont you usually have to show an emotion to your children..sometimes they make you mad or they do the cutest things and you cant help but smile...I think people would be "vanished" left and right

From what i gathered from this book, you were only allowed to marry if you had no attraction to your partner. the women were tought that "sex"(ooh) was "thier duty to the party" and that got rid of the atachment. that also made it so uncomfertable for the guys that they had no pleasure from it. the love between a mother and her children was destroyed by the constant fear that the children would "rat out" thier parents.

It isn't emotion that is the problem it's love and a sence of duty to anything but Big Brother and through him the State and Party. If you believe that something is more important then those then you might be willing to do something against the State. Infact hate is encuraged in some places like Hate Week or the Two Minutes Hate where emotion is properly directed as a tool for the Party. So ban love of anything but BB and properly channel all other emotion is support of the Party. Then you will keep people from wanting to help anyone other then the State.

I think when the book says 'no emotion' they mean facial expression. You don't really need facial expression to love someone or to have kids. They could also just show emotion outside of public  They also say in the book, you are only allowed to marry if you are not attracted to your partner.

When the novel says ur only allowed to marry if you are not attracted to ur partner is uncalled for. Not having marriage and having babies how they want you to is pretty ponitless. Thats when you want to have kids when ur in complete love and want that baby to symbolize love and happiness with your partner. Showing emotion is a way of life, of living and is needed in any form. This love thing in this novel is just stupid. Maybe not for them but for the public it deffintely is. I honestly dont see what the big deal would be if they just had love as they wanted but i do realize that this book is all about Big Brothers Rules and habits to living. :goof:
