Hi I am new to this site and I have a problem. I am a college student and I have an assignment to analyze a poem by william stafford called Traveling through the dark. Can someone please help me understand what this poem is about.

Hi, I found the poem in poemhunter. com, and after reading it I think maybe it's about compassion or consideration of a man, in this case towards other drivers. He's just driving by the road when he saw the dead deer and instead of moving on, he stopped and rolled the dear to the canyon. This way accidents can be avoided as maybe other drivers may not be as carefull as he is.

Traveling through the dark I found a deer
dead on the edge of the Wilson River road.
It is usually best to roll them into the canyon:
that road is narrow; to swerve might make more dead

thought hard for us all--my only swerving--,
then pushed her over the edge into the river.
