From http://toniaizu.home.netcom.com/d09.html

1. I have read fiction when I was depressed or to cheer myself up.
2. I have gone on reading binges of an entire book or more in a day.
3. I read rapidly, often "gulping" chapters.
4. I sometimes read early in the morning or before work.
5. I have hidden books in different places to sneak a chapter without being seen.
6. Sometimes I avoid friends or family obligations in order to read novels.
7. Sometimes I re-write film or television dialog as the characters speak.
8. I often read alone.
9. I have pretended to watch television while secretly reading.
10. I keep books or magazines in the bathroom for a "quick nip."
11. I have denied or "laughed off" criticism of my reading habit.
12. Heavy reading has caused conflicts with my family or spouse.
13. I am unable to enjoy myself with others unless there is a book nearby.
14. I seldom leave my house without a book or magazine.
15. When travelling, I pack a large bag full of books.
16. At a party, I will often slip off unnoticed to read.
17. Reading has made me seek haunts and companions which I would otherwise avoid.
18. I have neglected personal hygiene or household chores until I finished a novel.
19. I become nervous, disoriented, or fearful when I must spend more than 15 minutes without reading matter.
20. I have spent money meant for necessities on books instead.
21. I have sold books to support my reading "habit."
22. I have daydreamed about becoming a rich & famous writer, or "word-pusher."
23. I have attempted to check out more library books than is permitted.
24. Most of my friends are heavy fiction readers.
25. I have sometimes passed out or woken groggy or "hung-over" after a night of heavy reading.
26. I have suffered 'blackouts' or memory loss from a bout of reading.
27. I have wept, become angry or irrational because of something I read.
28. I have sometimes wished I did not read so much.
29. Sometimes I think my fiction reading is out of control.

If you answered 'yes' to five or more of these questions, you may be a literature abuser.

Affirmative responses to ten or more indicates a serious reading problem --seek help now!

Fifteen or more "yes" responses indicates a severe or chronic "readaholic" personality. Intervention is seldom effective at this stage.

Heeheee yup, readaholic here... :D

Which ones did you test positive for, den?

den
09-22-2003, 04:09 PM
:P I tested `positive' for most of them, so I'll tell you the ones I DIDN'T say yes to...

#7 - No I don't try to re-write lines for tv or movie characters

#9 - I've never pretended to watch tv so that I can read instead.

#16 - At parties I party, to read would be just rude. :P

#18 - I don't think I have ever neglected my personal hygiene in order to read more.

And #24 - No most of my friends aren't heavy readers, fiction or non.

And what about you ?

I said yes to more or less 8 of them (because I counted 2 of them as 1 since they're half true for me...). Even if #27 is very true... but it must be very true for most readers, I think...

And how I wish I could hide and read at parties...I'd avoid getting depressed everytime I hear the word 'party'.

For more information, 1,2,8 and 22. Honestly, the "to dream about becoming a writer" is rather common and only means to be a full-grown writer at some point, nothing to do with fame or riches in my case.
Anyway, I wouldn't give much credit to that "literature-abuse" test. I don't consider it to be anything more than a joke.

And how I wish I could hide and read at parties...I'd avoid getting depressed everytime I hear the word 'party'.

Tell me about it. I'm going to our year's end of term party, like a 'prom', tonight. It's gonna suck, partying with people I hate. I'm hoping I'll be so smashed it won't matter what happens and I won't be in any condition to care too much about anything. I like these lyrics from The White Stripes: "movies only make me sad, and parties make me feel as bad, when I'm not with you. I just don't know what to do..." It's so true. For me, anyway.

I answered 'yes' to about 70% of the test  :) Anyway, I'm gonna get ready now.

den
09-27-2003, 09:18 AM
Why do you go to parties with people you hate? I've had to go to so-called `parties' because of professsional and political reasons, you know, you have to go to someone from work's birthday party cocktail borefest because your absense would be glaringly obvious and ~weird~. God I hate that.

Thanks God we don't have 'prom' or whatever you call it in my country. One less night of depression in my life. ;)

We call them 'formals' in Australia, and they aren't as important here as they appear to be in America (as in: "OH MY GOD IT'S THE PROM!!!!"). It's something for the girls to get excited about and dressed up for, and a reason for the guys to get ****-faced etc.
This year we had a costume formal. I went as a beatnik, with a bere, a pair of round sun glasses, tight jeans, black boots and a pair of bongo drums. I have photos for your amusement, if you like.
The only reason I had fun that night is because I didn't know what the hell was going on for most of it. Otherwise, yes, I might have taken a book.

AbdoRinbo

I went to all the high school proms, homecomings, sweetheart dances, &c. Once I remember dancing when, out of nowhere, twenty black girls ran to me, pressed themselves against my body and started chanting 'we've got you, Whitey.' I collapsed to the floor. I recall gazing up a hundred skirts and then passing out from heat exhaustion. Luckily, a cute little asian girl had started kicking me and got me out of there before a hundred angry prom dates gave me a hardcore ***-beating. She became my dance partner forever thereafter.

huh. i do five of those. which is surprising because i don't actually read that much. about the prom thing; i'm seriously thinking of not even going to ours. why bother? it's fun to dress up, and i'd prolly go just for the sake of being able to wear a ball gown somewhere.. anywhere, but i don't like a lot of ppl who would go and in the end it'd prolly end up like a big drunken orgy which i'd rather not be in the vicinity of. if u don't wanna go, just don't. it's pretty simple.

I said NO to:

#3 I don't read rapidly (although that would depend on the book)

#9 I rarely watch TV but when I do, it is usually because there is something I want to watch so I pay attention.

#11 I don't deny my geeky status; quite proud of it actually. Geeks of the world, unite!

#16 I like socialising so if I am a party, I will make best of it.

#18 Not personal hygiene but I have neglected chores.

#20 I usually get my books for free from those wonderful places called libraries.

#21 Ditto.

#24 Unfortunately, most of my friends are casual readers, which explains why I spend so much time on this Forum.

Guess, I am a 'readaholic'... and proud of it! :D

Said no to:

7. Rewriting TV dialogue sounds like more of a television obsession problem than a reading problem...

11. No one has ever criticized my reading habits, that I can recall, but even if they did, why deny it??

12. Real people always come before books. Well... real people you like, anyway. :D

13. See above comment.

16. And again, see above. :) Which doesn't mean I haven't wanted to, on occasion...

17. Does this Lit Forum count as a haunt?? ;) I'd be here anyway. :D

19. I become nervous, disoriented, or fearful whenever there are ferocious animals in the room. :p

21. Isn't selling books to support a reading habit rather contradictory...?

23. No limit on library books where I come from!

24. Most of my friends are slackers.

26. Does time running away count as a "blackout?"

28. I have only wished there were more hours in the day so I could do all my reading and still get other stuff done! (Like my thesis...)

29. Nah. I've put a temporary (very sad) hold on my fiction reading until I do all the non-fiction reading I'm supposed to be doing. Bleh. It's gonna be a busy catch-up summer!

I do the same, actually. Not to seem rude, during brief 10 minute breaks in my extremely long psychology class, I often manage to read a chapter of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace (the chapters seem fairly short), while everyone else socializes and asks the professor various questions.
On occasion, it makes me feel like a hermit. :D

(if hiding a book under the table during class counts ;) )
6. Sometimes I avoid friends or family obligations in order to read novels.
7. Sometimes I re-write film or television dialog as the characters speak.
8. I often read alone.
9. I have pretended to watch television while secretly reading. [Haha, probably happened once or twice.. but the reverse also occurs]
10. I keep books or magazines in the bathroom for a "quick nip."
11. I have denied or "laughed off" criticism of my reading habit.
12. Heavy reading has caused conflicts with my family or spouse. [my ex-boyfriend would have liked it if going to bed with me would not always have meant -spending hours with the lights on and a good book-]
13. I am unable to enjoy myself with others unless there is a book nearby. [Well, it is a relaxing thought that I can always take a good book out of my bag and have fun.. ]
14. I seldom leave my house without a book or magazine. [Why seldom? Never is more like it ]
15. When travelling, I pack a large bag full of books.

17. Reading has made me seek haunts and companions which I would otherwise avoid. [Hmm.. at university I sometimes spend times with others just because they liked to read as much as I do]
18. I have neglected personal hygiene or household chores until I finished a novel. [well, chores definitely.. I would have to ask others about the personal hygiene :brow:]
19. I become nervous, disoriented, or fearful when I must spend more than 15 minutes without reading matter.

21. I have sold books to support my reading "habit."
22. I have daydreamed about becoming a rich & famous writer, or "word-pusher."
23. I have attempted to check out more library books than is permitted.
24. Most of my friends are heavy fiction readers. [yeah, probably most - but not all of my friends]

I have deleted the ones that don't apply to me.. Ouch.. I have to seek help. Do they have Literature Anonymous anywhere?

Hermit-shmermit!!! How many hermits can digest a Psyche class and War and Peace in a single serving???? *gags at the thought of it*

Your the classic lit warrior MOno...............keep up the lit addiction.....make us all proud....... *wonders who will volunteer to design the Online-Lit site's new tattoo*.......
Thanks, he-he. Though I continue to presently read War and Peace, I cannot quite confess how much of it I understand, as the number of characters seems a little overwhelming, and, as Tolstoy's usual style proceeds, each chapter tends to bounce from scene to scene (from narrating war, to marriage, to drinking . . .).
The psychology class, on the contrary, seems relatively easy; and I do not say that out of immodesty - nearly everyone in the class has done very well thus far.

Please let me join the R.A...
Welcome to the program! Though the success rate seems low, I as living proof, I wish you luck, preventing yourself from spreading those pages between book covers, eye strain, and, most of all, bookstores and libraries.

11. I have denied or "laughed off" criticism of my reading habit.

I don't understand this at all. Any [sic] who criticizes my reading habit gets an equal and opposite reactionary criticism themselves. Knowledge is power?

I wouldn't ever be ashamed et. all concerning my desire to read about, learn from and understand more about the world around me. What kind of person criticizes the reader?

other average joes who haven't spent every free moment with their nose in a book like "some" of us (:D) Just like we might poke fun at someone who spends every free second plugged into their ipod...and who may still be plugged into it at work or while multitasking...someone may poke fun at readers for the same :p I don't think it is meant to say that the people are criticizing readers for their thirst for knowledge, rather questioning a habit that appears to be an obsession.

I didn't finish the test, I got scared after too many "yes"s

... And I don't have enough time to read half as much as I'd like to! :O

1. I have read fiction when I was depressed or to cheer myself up. (Very often)
2. I have gone on reading binges of an entire book or more in a day. (Sometimes several books in one day)
3. I read rapidly, often "gulping" chapters. (I can read very fast, though I don't read so fast that I'd miss something!)
4. I sometimes read early in the morning or before work. (Used to do this every day when I was younger... Now only, if I don't have to go too early)
5. I have hidden books in different places to sneak a chapter without being seen.
6. Sometimes I avoid friends or family obligations in order to read novels.
8. I often read alone.
9. I have pretended to watch television while secretly reading.
11. I have denied or "laughed off" criticism of my reading habit. (My parents used to tell me that I'm addicted and two books should be quite enough for one day :D )
12. Heavy reading has caused conflicts with my family or spouse.
14. I seldom leave my house without a book or magazine.
15. When travelling, I pack a large bag full of books.
19. I become nervous, disoriented, or fearful when I must spend more than 15 minutes without reading matter. (15 minutes is a bit exaggerated, but when it comes to a bit longer periods of time, then yes)
26. I have suffered 'blackouts' or memory loss from a bout of reading. (Erm... What day is it? :D It happens especially in summer)
27. I have wept, become angry or irrational because of something I read. (I don't think that's very unusual... At least I do it quite a lot)
