It is annoying when petty restrictions are put on videos but, yes, it is the same group. I was glad to have tracked down 'One Never Knows' as it was actually composed as music for a strange Roger Vadim film starring Jeanne Moreau with Stanley Baker and set in Venice. I hadn't heard it for years but I have it on an old 45rpm disc that is now so scratchy as to be unrecognisable.

I just remembered this song and popped it on. I remember watching two young boys at a school I worked at singing along to this at an end of term talent show. They had practiced and came and sang along to it in front of the whole school. I'd never heard it before and I liked the song. Iwas really impressed by the two lads who were scallies, but really endearing ones. It's a nice memory.

I do indeed include the soliloquy: the trick is to do it without laughing; which I invariably fail to do.
With the exception of Marlene Dietrich, Noel had a particular dislike of the Germans and leapt at the chance to help the propaganda effort during the war.
I don't suppose that Hitler ever heard Noel's song but I suspect that Goebbels might have. There is a story, probably apocryphal, that during the war Noel was on a German death list that included Churchill and other prominent politicians,
but apart from his musical achievements, I don't think his sexual proclivities would have endeared Noely boy to the German authorities of the day.

Ja das macht sehnsucht nach Deutschland und besonders nach Berlin.

Ja sicher, Sie haben recht. Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and fortunately, unlike Berlin, is was not completely destroyed during the war. I have been there a few times but that was long ago. I haven't been to Berlin since the wall came down but I must go to walk through the Brandenburg gate, which is something I promised myself back in the days of the East/West divide when it was impossible. All of the magnificent buildings shown in the video are familiar to me: Schönbrunn Palace and the Glorietta, the Town Hall, the Hofburg, the Opera, the Karlskirche etc. etc.

You're right. Vienna didn't escape unscathed, but we were rather lucky compared to other cities. I was quite saddened by what I saw in Exeter and my mother said the same about Plymouth.

Lord Morry sighed, “Yeah I guess you’re right. Not like the good old days with Frankie Laine eh? Now there was a singer.”
“He’s still around but he gets drowned out by all the electronic noise that’s on the market nowadays,” said Wally.
“You know, I used to play his records all the time when I first started in the music game: him and Johnny Ray. I don’t know which one I sold the most of.
That was the difference in those days, the kids had class,” said Morry nostalgically.

I have to disagree. There should never have been a time and place for Frankie Laine or Johnnie Ray. :D

As for Psycho a go-go, Admin's very timely aphorism says it all.

Aphorism #30 Have naught to do with Occupations of Ill-repute, still less with fads that bring more notoriety than repute. There are many fanciful sects, and from all the prudent man has to flee. There are bizarre tastes that always take to their heart all that wise men repudiate; they live in love with singularity. This may make them well known indeed, but more as objects of ridicule than of repute. A cautious man does not even make profession of his wisdom, still less of those matters that make their followers ridiculous. These need not be specified, for common contempt has sufficiently singled them out.

I had no idea what he looked like but he does get a mention in my first book.

'On taking office, he appointed his protégé to present a new prime time weekly programme on arts and entertainment. Rowley didn't know much about either subject, but immediately saw the latter would best serve his audience appeal. Apart from paintings by court artists and others he’d seen in history books, he had little knowledge of art, and even less of music which had often affronted him because he didn’t see that Beethoven was any more valid than Bo Diddley, except that one was for highbrows and the other for normal people.'

I don't know if there is a picture of her in peasant dress but it's not necessary to speak French to
appreciate these interviews. She answers the questions honestly and with a completely natural
charm. When she says that her life is like a large prison: an agreeable prison but a prison nonetheless, she
underlines the price she was paying for being one of the most adorable women on the planet.

Though I've heard those a thousand times, I'll never tire of Miller. Nice.
Paulclem mentioned that he had to write himself a letter on the Blokes thread which led me to this wonderful recording by Fats Waller:

'People actually playing real instruments. What will they think of next?'

hehe, well actually my Rocco was posted in jest at Pendragon's expense.

Ah yes, well with Artie, it leaves no doubt to ability and class.
Artie is at, or certainly near, the top of my list in terms of the big band era greats.

Emil, here's someone you might be familiar with and appreciate.
I read in the news yesterday about the passing of Eydie Gormé. The name had a vague familiar ring to it, but it wasn't until I played the song below, that I recalled a voice I knew from background of my youth.

I don't think I ever heard her although I had heard of her. She was probably bigger in the US than in the UK but I do remember seeing record covers of hers during the period just before and after the proverbial hit the fan in the 1960s.
Her passing was mentioned on the BBC news yesterday but, given that Freddie of the Dreamers also got an obituary a few years ago, I don't know how significant that is.

Here's another from the days when music required more than publicity and the mass mentality.
